Editor's Note:

I freely admit; If the NAACP decided to present an award for web sites and offered AALBC.com one I would proudly accept it.

Further, I strongly support the awards program particularly if the alternative is BET or nothing.

However, every year the winners of some of these categories don't make sense. In a way it kinda bothers me, because there is so much out there that is not being acknowledged... It would appear popularity or celebrity holds more weight than merit.

Is it just me, or does anyone else agree?

I'm skeptical on this entire topic. First of all, I don't think acting is any great feat. I also feel that Black folks as a whole are overly involved in watching television and movies, going to movies and spending money on movies, when we have much more important real-life matters that require our attention. And our funds.

We could have already restored NOLA (or relocated/housed those affected) if we contributed our money to that cause instead of wasting it at the movies.

People seem to use television/movies as an escape from reality, while they are missing out on real experiences. And parents continue to use the television as babysitters.

Back to the actors - people like Vivica Fox, Shemar Moore and Terrence Howard aren't really that fascinating in their craft. I'm curious to know who the other nominees were. And when the NAACP gives an award to BET for something that aired back in 2005, it kind of makes me wonder who's in charge. Hopefully that's a typo.

And Jamie Foxx - Whatta joke. Here he is pouring liquor down some woman's throat. I don't care what he does in private, but this is the way he conducts himself in public with photographers around. Is this his idea of how to treat a lady with dignity and respect??? And is that the NAACP's idea of the personification of the "ideals of civil and human rights"???

That's why the Black community is in shambles now. We worship and present "awards" to people who don't deserve diddly squat from the community.

The NAACP needs to present more relevant awards for such achievements as humanitarianism, volunteerism, entrepreneurism, philanthropy, teacher of the year, doctor of the year, etc. Recognize the people in professions who are really making a difference.

These acting, singing and dancing awards are a bunch of fluff.

Did I mention that I'm skeptical???

Hey Muzuri,

I don't know who gave you the 1 star but I'll cast my vote afteer this post.

While I don't feel quite as strongly as you do. For example we gave our gov't enough money to take care of the Katrina aftermath, so I'm not going to begroan people who go to movies.

I also think a good actor requires talent or at least a lot of training.

I think the NAACP giving out awards for the things you mentioned is a great idea. Though, I'm sure it will not help TV ratings.

Now the NAACP does award the The Spingarn Medal each year, but who the heck can name the last recipient? The winners of this medal are all great people.

Maybe they should have a medal for folks in many categories. If the NAACP gave teachers, Dr's, humanitarians, etc, image awards; it would show folks, especially your young people, which accomplishments we find truly value.

Not only should they give out these awards they have to promote the fact that this is done.

What good does it do to give a Jamie Foxx an award for what is agurably mediocre album...

I think the book awards are a good start (in that a major orgnaization is giving authors awards), but they should have more categories and do something about their selection process.

I have a hater/stalker that follows me around and gives me one stars. Possibly even more than one. I'm hoping that one day they will be able to detach.

I'm talking about the people whose lives revolve around seeing the latest movies, not casual observers. You know the ones who flock to every movie like they're missing something if they don't. Or when actor JoeBlow has a new movie it's a must see simply because JoeBlow is in it. Or the ones that are stuck on Idol, Housewives, Sopranos, and all the rest. When people could be creating their own experiences as opposed to watching someone else. This is a societal problem that doesn't only impact Black people.

The government and our money. That's a whole 'nother topic. If the U.S. government managed our resources properly, we could have heaven here on earth. NOLA will be mostly rebuilt with private funds or it's not going to happen.

I agree that writers deserve awards, and poets, techies, webmasters, etc. People who actually have brains

I agree with both you Troy and Mzuri...and as a sidepost, they could take a clue from the Essence Awards...at least they managed to recognized some unknown individuals who made great contributions, dedicated their lives, everyday heroe's and then some famous folks who extended themselves for the benefit of AA's and others. Yes i agree some if not most of their selections are based on popularity and not merit...just wasted paper.

Great points, Troy, Mzuri and Sisg. I have posted this in the past--As much as I have my "issues" with Disney, I love this effort of theirs: http://disney.go.com/disneyhand/learning/teacherawards/

The NAACP long ago lost its credibility. It now just gets by on it past reputation and is little more than a organization that just goes through the motions of being relevant. These Image Awards are a smorgasbord of little substance that provide something for everyone.

Thanks for the insight. Perhaps they could regain their credibility by adding some new categories such as Thugginest Thug, Big Ballers, Pimps and Hoes, and who had the worst botched-up boob job. At least this way they could keep it real.

As I recall, Zane was the award winner last year (2006) for the book, Breaking the Cycle. So, this it'll be the 38th Image Award show. The air date is this Saturday, March 3. Looking at the ballot for this year's award show, they expanded the literary category beyond the three listed above. There are 8 literary catgeories now.

This is the winner listing from last year, 2006.

Here is this years list:
Jan. 9, 2007

The 38th NAACP Image Awards nominations were recently announced during a press conference (Jan. 9) at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Vanessa Williams, Isaiah Washington, Chandra Wilson, Shaun Robinson and DB Woodside joined NAACP President and CEO Bruce S. Gordon, NAACP Image Awards Committee Chairman Clayola Brown and Image Awards Executive Producer Vicangelo Bulluck to announce this year’s nominees.

The NAACP Image Awards honors projects and individuals that promote diversity in the arts in television, recording, literature and motion pictures. The theme of this year’s show is “Youth Create Change.” The show will air live on Friday, March 2nd (8:00 – 10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on FOX.

The CBS network leads with a total of 19 nominations, followed by The CW with 17. “Everybody Hates Chris” received eight nominations, including the directing category. “Girlfriends” received six nominations, including the directing and writing categories.

Sony Urban leads the recording category with seven nominations, including four for Beyoncé, which tied Mary J. Blige for the individual high. Capitol and Universal records followed with five nominations apiece.

In the motion picture category, Lionsgate Films received eight nominations, including two in the directing and writing categories. Sony and Dreamworks/Paramount followed with seven nominations each. “Dreamgirls” garnered eight nominations, including best soundtrack. “Akeelah and the Bee” and “The Pursuit of Happyness” both received five nominations, with an “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture” nomination for newcomer Jaden Christopher Syre Smith.

This year, over 1,200 entries were received. From those entries, a special committee of 300 industry professionals and NAACP leaders from across the country selected five nominees in each of 35 categories. Any artist, manager, publicist, production company, record label, studio, network or publishing house may submit an entry to the NAACP Image Awards. The final selections are voted on by NAACP members, and winners will be announced during the live airing of the 38th NAACP Image Awards.

Major sponsors of the 38th NAACP Image Awards are FedEx, Verizon and General Motors. Additional sponsors include American Airlines, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Chrysler, Diageo, Ford and Sprint.

Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities and monitor equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

Thanks for posting the current list Ms. LiLi.

But my original comments stand. This year's awardees are just as bad as last year's. And why are people like George Lopez, America Ferrera, and Dave Matthews on this list at all??? The NAACP is now presenting image awards to caucasians???

And are they serious about “Whoopi’s Big Book of Manners” – for children - WTF!!!

(Let me ask you a question. Are you a member of the NAACP? If so, you should address your comments to the leadership. If not--well, you know what they and the rest of us think about them.

The CP stands for Colored People. You know, like the kind of time you keep (heheheheh! Boy that's a good 'un as we say in Missouri)

The NAACP, after some debate over whether they should continue to address just blacks, has decided to go multi culti--like everything else.

Finally white folks run the organization. They always have. Their money controls it. They started the organization. I don't know, after knowing this, why anybody still questions anything they do)

"Nevermind"

Wow Libralind2 thanks for posting the correction!

I have to say the current list explains a lot. I was like; "man, they missed every freaking good book they could have selected!"

I would not have added my commentary if I'd actually posted this year's list.

I do like this year's nomineess and expanded categories in the book category. It is a definite improvement over last year.

I saw "Whoopi’s Big Book of Manners" I actually read it too (smile). It is a cute little book, but it is not a Black book. Again celebrity helps and Whoppi is black, at least according to Skip Gates' tests. I would not be surprised if she won.

I read a couple of the books in the Outstanding Literary Work – Debut Author ategory. I can tell you right now Harper's book should not even be compared to Dwight Fryers book, The Legend of Quito Road -- espeically if you are going to call it "Literary Work". But I would not be surprised if Harper winner.

As a matter of fact they should just replace "Literary Work" with "Book".

Funny how as I breezed through the list I could not tell a the list it was from a year prior. I know my pop culture quotient is pretty low but I looked at both lists and a lot is duplicated from both years same shows, actors, etc.

Well if someone finds the actual winners in the book category (from THIS year) I would appreicate it. I can not find it on the NAACP's web site.

----------

Chris it is interesting that they would give awards to whites... I guess the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is now giving awards to Black folks -- it is a brave new world.

I bow to both your internet search skills. Was I blind or was this information actually available on the NAACP site?

I actually did not think they would give Hill awards in both categories. I knew he would win one.

Whoopie was a suprise, but deserved defeat. The "Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom," is a Black book, with great illustrations.

...after visiting the NAACP web site, it looks like the voting is by the public, if that is the case; then that fact that celebrity is factor comes as no surprise. People, in the aggregate, will vote for the most popular author or subject.

Thanks again, this will go into the next newsletter.

Peace

I don't think that surfing, posting, cutting and pasting is really a skill, but thanks for the kind words. I found the info from a link over at Drudge.

And BTW, LiLi is looking for work. Don't you need a virtual assistant or something
