Hey all. Several people emailed me about one of the WOMEN listed in the 50 African Writers thread Nafisa started. They were startled by the photo of this woman writer from Sierra Leone who they felt "is really a man":  Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone, UK) Her memoir The Devil that Danced on the Water (2000) was shortlisted in England for the Samuel Johnson Prize. She also has a novel, Ancestor Shoes (2006). But Amminatta is NOT a man. Now, I realize that American black women never have to think about this or make the connection... ...but this is why ALL WOMEN should support those African feminists who are against Female Genital Mutilation and Infibulation. Very often when you see "African women" on television and they look "very masculine" ....it is because of the fact that 100 Million women on the continent each decade continue to be "Cut"---which often results in "rupturing" of the hormonal ducts and natural hormones that females produce as they mature. ESPECIALLY in women who have been "infibulated" ---which means that their "internal vaginal muscles" have been cut and re-assembled to unaturally tighten the vagina permanently. When a child is infibulated--they sew her vagina shut until her wedding night. Many times she must have her period through a straw. Other damage is also done...and you will see women in Africa who are WOMEN, but they appear extremely masculine, because this proceedure was done in childhood. MOST WOMEN who have been "infibulated"---not the Female Genital Circumcision but "infibulated"---suffer from grave Hormone imbalances all their lives. Here is a better picture of Aminatta who was a BBC reporter and writes at Harper Collins.  And while we're on it---when people meet me in person, you will see that I don't have the "jawline" in this photo in real life, and that I look much softer than this, but for some reason photos can sometimes do to me what they do to Aminatta.  What I'm trying to say to Black American Sisters is that you really need to support us in striking down this practice of "infibulation" that is STILL very widespread in Africa. It literally tortures the lives of women from birth to death. And it takes away our womanliness. | ||

The ovaries and adrenals produce female sex hormones - not the vagina, vaginal canal or cervix. Therefore, the "cutting" of the vagina, vaginal canal and even the cervix will not "rupture" the ovaries or adrenals, and it will not hinder those particular glands from performing their primary function in the female, human body. And most women, unless they've had their ovaries removed or have weak adrenals/adrenal fatigue (that can be caused by various medical conditions), can produce healthy levels of female sex hormones. If any given woman has higher circulating androgens in her body - which some can also be converted into excess testosterone (depending on the ratio of estrogen to progesterone in her body) - will result in more masculine looking features. Which, most likely, could be this particular woman's issue. | ||

With roots in both Scotland and Sierra Leone, Ms. Forna now lives in London and works for the BBC. Westerners are neglecting to police their own governments, Ms. Forna observes. That vigilance, she asserts, is a personal responsibility, recalling what happened in Nazi Germany -- enough good people did nothing and allowed the wrong kinds of people to take power in their country. Moonsigns have you ever been infibulated? Do you know WHICH MUSCLES are cut and re-arranged in the process? Do you know what happens to the CERVIX after infibulation and that some tribes eat it??? Do you have any knowledge of what happens to the Vaginal Mucous Membrane when portions of it have been removed to accomodate muscle restructure? Do you have any CARE or RESPECT for women who have suffered this process? Is there any part of being a WOMAN that you could "compassionately" place above your resentment and despising of Kola Boof? To all the women who will seriously read this thread... I have been infibulated since at least the age of 3. I have never had a "regular" period. I have ALWAYS suffered "hormonal imbalance" that American doctors at JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY and at DC GENERAL and at USC MEDICAL have assured me are tied to the "infibulation" that caused "blockage", "damage" and "suffocation" of important vaginal tissues and membranes that are necessary for normal production and distribution of hormones. TRUE--I do not look anything like a man. TRUE--I have huge tits and a fat ass and very long, silky shapely legs. TRUE--I have successfully bore two sons (and miscarried 3 other sons) But I have also experienced Hormonal Imbalance ALL MY LIFE. MOONCLUCK is not infibulated and doesn't know what the fukk she's talking about ---but hopefully some other women reading this will CARE about the "specific" damage that is done in this Ritualistic Cleansing Ceremonies. | ||

All I asked you was how do you know with 100% certainty that this particular individual is NOT a man. Are you aware of the high incidence of intersexuality, hermaphroditic and transgendered individuals, and that this birth defect occurs rather frequently (people just don't talk about it for obvious reasons)? Kola, Again, the ovaries and adrenals produce sex hormones - NOT the vagina, vaginal canal, cervix and/or the vaginal mucous membranes of the vagina. Now, all the above can be influenced by the production of female sex hormones by the ovaries and adrenals; however, it has never been the other way around. You, as well as many other African women, who bear children and have also been "infibulated", are proof that your ovaries and adrenals are producing enough progesterone - as well as other significant female hormones - to carry a baby to full-term. In regards to the practice of female mutilation/infibulation, I think it's wicked! Also, you're not the only female who suffers from hormonal imbalances. However, you, like so many other women - especially in America - suffer hormonal issues because of environmental toxins, particularly plastics. Because of the heavy use of pesticides on crops, hormones given to animals that humans eat, poor water quality and/or the harsh ingredients in many cosmetics, the delicate endocrine system of any female can be - and IS - greatly compromised! And it has not one thing to do with gential mutilation/infibulation. | ||

Please note: When you have "hormonal imbalance", you cannot take hormone replacements, because like a Diabetic, there is no way to monitor the imbalance. Therefore, you have to live with what you have. At 17, I shot to 6'2. After I lost my virginity--my rear end POPPED into a huge round onion OVERNITE. I never had acne until I was 22 and it only lasted 1 summer. It came back at age 26--again for 1 summer. I had to be treated for a "nervous eye" (definite hormone imbalance). I used to have "body shakes" (like a chill) and it was diagnosed as hormone in blood not receiving enough oxygen due to my cigarette smoking--which I quit. After two babies and breastfeeding each--my breasts did the REVERSE of other women, instead of getting flat and sucked out...mine DOUBLED and miraculously kept their shape into my 40's. I honest to god had 18 year old titties at 37. Only in the last 18 months have they started to droop. Most shocking--I recently started "menopause" only to go into "remission". Have any of you started menopause for 3 months and then gone into REMISSION???? When I had the menopause--I grew a small patch of "gray hairs" on my pussy. When the bleeding miraculously started back up and the doctor informed me that I had gone into "remission"----the gray pussy hairs fell out and now it's all black again. Then I wanted to get fukked again. Only thing about getting fukked for an infibulated woman---you're OLD now and but your pie is still 12. The doctor says I will go "in and out" of menopause, because of the imbalance, and maybe stay in it permanently at around 60. I realize that other women just don't give a shit and that they find this to be a source for "catty frivalous exchanges"....but for some women, this is their lives. This is not funny or open for frivalous gossip. Moonsigns, My imbalance has been with me since I was a child. I guess you haven't read my autobiography, but I had a HEART ATTACK at D.C. General in Washington, D.C. before I was 10 years old. My imbalance comes from "infection" that was probably in my vaginal system after the infibulation at 3...and was not treated, but allowed to just linger until my own body got rid of it. EVERY "infibulated" woman that I have ever spoken to---which is about 600----have told me that they suffer "hormone imbalances". You know the famous model Waris Darie??? Kola, In the latest fatality, 12-year-old Bedur Ahmed Shaker was taken by her mother to a private clinic in Minya, a town on the Nile south of Cairo, for the operation. She died before she could be transferred to hospital. Kola; I have read about female circumcision (with crossed legs) and the different types that are 'availible'. I think a Somalian woman (whose book I read, 'Aman') made a good point when she said that female circumcision the 'tradtional' way is wrong. However, it is equally wrong for western sources to come into African and Middle Eastern countries and try and stop the practice when they have no real understanding of it. A solution was to promote a different type of female circumcision, one which IS bad in itself, but not as painful. This type of circumcision is where the clitoris is pricked and made to bleed a small amount as opposed to being chopped off. Now, I do understand that any female circumcision (sorry, I really cannot spell that word) is terrible. But maybe this is a temporary solution? By digressing to a less painful procedure maybe slowly and surely we can wipe out the practice altogether. Stopping female circumcision is going to be a long, hard process - getting people to understand the practice is a process in itself. Maybe for now prevention is better than cure? What do you think as a woman who has been infibulated? Moonsigns: I have also heard that some hair relaxers and straightening creams can f'ck up your hormones and the puberty process in young women because of the chemicals et cetera that are present in it. The cultures are set up to where a woman isn't considered "clean" unless she's been "cut"---therefore, no man wants an unclean bride. That is why the women's clan "carries it out", and just like Christianity---after thousands of years, they believe all the "superstitions" that the men have ingrained about what will happen to you if you don't have this done. Women are terrified of NOT having it done. In the last 20 years, however, there has been a sweeping "African feminist" movement to eradicate two things---Polygamy and FGM. Thousands of African women have been stoned to death or trampled by mobs for this. Now there is a new movement against skin bleaching, which I cover in my novel "The Sexy Part of the Bible" Latina_Wi and A_woman: You are right about the photos. That is why I posted other photos of Aminatta so that people could see that she is not as "masculine-looking" as she apparently looked on THAT DAY. When cut women have "hormonal imbalances"--they have days when they look more feminine than others. For instance---have you ever been on your period and your breasts swell up larger and your ankles, too??? Then it goes away when the bleeding stops, right? Well that's what I'm trying to explain. Women who have these hormonal imbalances due to "damage" to their inner-structure suffer with all types of "fluctuations" and that is what can cause a HARD looking photo like the 1st one on one day---and then usually she looks normal. I do realize that the same could be said of transsexuals. However, Aminatta's life is well documented starting with her BIRTH to a famous man. There are baby pictures of her father holding her and the photos are inscribed: his newly born daughter Aminatta. African people know this woman since childhood. THIS RUMOR is not true. But I wanted to share with other women some of the specific experiences of being infibulated so that you would be even more against the practice of it. You should really see the movie "MOOLADE" that dramatizes this being done to little girls. And I'm sure you have seen images of "masculine" looking African women on documentaries and such and NOBODY EVER REALIZES why they look that way. Sure---sometimes it's because they're bald. Latina_Wi, MY clitoris was not removed. My mother was a Waaq and an Oromo, so she wouldn't allow that. She also, however---AFTER MARRIAGE---was infibulated to fit Egyptian standards, as my father's family the Kolbookeks required. If they had removed my clitoris--I honestly don't think I could have become "Kola Boof" as you know me. I would be a librarian or something. FGM is circumcision which often includes the removal of the clitoris. Infibulation is much more serious--it is the removal and re-aligning of the vaginal muscles followed by the muscles being TIED together and the vagina stitched SHUT until your wedding night. I was infibulated because I was born MUSLIM and my Egyptian father demanded that his daughter be infibulated like all the women in his family. In the photo above---they showed the blackest Egyptians they could find, but it's the Arab Muslims with WHITE skin who do the most FGM in Egypt...and it's even more widely practiced in Saudi Arabia and Jordan. | ||

Though not practiced by conventional medicine enough, saliva testing is one of the most accurate ways to detemine female sex hormones. Testing female hormones through saliva is far better than blood serum, because saliva testing measures the "free" bioavailability of sex hormones to other tissues/organs in the body. And once the levels are tested, a compound pharmacist is the best way to go for hormone therapy, because they can prescribe bioidentical hormones. Conventional medicine, as it pertains to female hormones, does women a great disservice by prescribing "fake" hormones. It wrecks complete havoc on the endocrine system!!!! As far as "monitoring" female hormones, if an issue is detected through saliva testing, and a bioidentical hormone is prescribed, retesting is required every three months. After the imbalance is treated successfully - meaning all female sex hormones are within normal range - retesting is required every 6- 12 months. There are two downfalls to saliva testing, though. One, conventional medicine acknowledges it - and knows the truth of it's accuracy - but few practioners will recommend such testing because it is a loss of capital (for them). And secondly, saliva testing without insurance coverage, for many, is too costly. | ||

MOONSIGNS, The vaginal system is "part" of the Flushing/Nurturing system for women's Ovarian Hormonal production and distribution. HORMONES in the Ovaries need "OXYGEN" from the blood that is pumped by the muscles through the Vagina and the hormones get a nutrient from the "Vaginal Mucous Membrane". If the structures of the vagina are traumatized or destroyed---then the hormones are still present, but they will not get oxygen and will malfunction. Just because the Ovaries are fine--doesn't mean that the production of distribution of hormones aren't corrupted by trauma and damage to the places where hormones GROW and REPRODUCE--in fact, the very "blood" that is shared by the Ovaries and the Vaginal walls and other structures receives LESS OXYGEN when the muscles do not properly pump the blood. I have been through this...All My Life. So I know a helluva lot more about it than you do. Also I had a heart attack before I was 10--I cannot take replacement hormones. Specialists also prefer not to prescribe replacement hormones to other women who have hormonal imbalances because there is no way to predict/measure the fluctuations and you put the woman AT RISK for "seizures" and other problems if she accidentally receives too much. alot of american doctors (and research scientists) basically dont know what they're talking about.... and many of the ones who do know what is going on with your body and what's causing the problems will either try to keep you mixed up or wont tell you whats going. Back on topic, I wish I could remember where I read this, but there was a theory in a magazine I read years ago that said something to the effect that the products we use on our hair have a large effect on girls hitting puberty before girls in other countries. They based this mostly on how early girls mature in countries where relaxing, etc., are normal versus countries where it's not. It was said that black girls in the west typically hit puberty at around 10-12 while the age is older for African girls. From what I know, many diabetics ARE amputees, or, sadly, will become amputees - that's part of their disease. Most people don't realize this about diabetics because they don't associate the amputation with the diabetes, and the amputation usually begins with the toes and works its way up the body as the disease progresses. One of my uncles is diabetic. They started out removing one toe on, I think, his left foot. Then two, three, four, (and so on), toes had to be removed. Four years from the time his doctors amputated his first toe, they had to amputate his legs. Today, my uncle is a double-amputee; both legs cut at his knees - as a result of his diabetes. This is very common amongst diabetics. This also explains why when any of us go in for our annual physicals, one of the questions we're asked is: Do you have any cuts that aren't healing? That question should sound familiar to everyone here; because lack of healing is a sign of poor circulation, which is a sympton of diabetes; and diabetes can lead to MASSIVE dead tissue, which WILL RESULT in amputation. Many diabetics also go blind because of dead retinol tissue. So, there is credence to Moonsigns' post. However, I have no idea what it's like to be infibulated or suffer from FGM, and my heart goes out to the baby girls who have the misfortune of being born into a barbaric culture with archaic practices. I mean, get a phukin clue - they see these practices KILL little girls. If these girls don't die, they spend their whole lives suffering. One has to wonder if they would have been better off dead. I know quite well that the COMPLICATIONS of diabetes can lead to amputation--it is not the result of poor circulation ONLY that causes this. I too had a family member who had a toe amputated due to the complications of diabetes, but years have passed and the toe remains the only amputation. So it is much more complicated than just poor circulation. And also, what of the millions of elderly americans who suffer from poor circulation and do not end up as amputees? BB123, I'm not a doctor nor do I possess any REAL medical knowledge, but I have cared for both my uncle and grandmother, who also suffered from diabetes. That being said, what I do know is: diabetics must eat on schedule, stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water, regular eye exams, wear comfortable shoes, and elevate their feet as much as possible. In fact, they should stay off their feet as much as possible. My grandma (now deceased) and uncle (very much alive - he says he's gonna outlive all of us!) eat 8-10 times per day. Very small, but frequent, well-balanced meals, to keep their blood sugar as stable as possible. Your mom should also maintain a healthy weight and not be sedentary. Also, she should take a daily complete vitamin and mineral supplement that's sugar-free and starch-free. Of course if your mom's insulin-dependent, as my grandmother was and my uncle currently is, she must take her meds religiously and on schedule; and test her blood sugar often. It's also wise for her to always carry a container of OJ with her. If she ever feels dizzy/lightheaded while she's out and about, she can find somewhere to sit and sip on the OJ; and it should stabilize her blood glucose within 15-20 minutes because the body absorbs orange juice fairly quickly. If you don't already, you should go with your mom to her doctor's appointments whenever possible. That way you can ask questions and become well-informed about your mom's condition, and know what to do in case of insulin shock. And you should treat your mom to regular year-round pedicures. It's not so much having her toenails painted, but the massage helps improve circulation and reduce swelling. BUT DON'T LET THEM CLIP HER CUTICLES - just have them pushed back! Again, I'm not an MD and this is not medical advice. This is what I know worked for my grandmother and uncle. Although my uncle is a double-amputee, (my grandmother's body never needed amputation), his doctors said he wouldn't even be alive considering how bad his diabetes is if he wasn't otherwise healthy. So while there are no guarantees, the better your mom takes care of herself, the slimmer her chances will be of having necessary amputation; and the better her chances will be of survival if she does need surgery/amputation. All the best to your mom, and to YOU. Caring for a sick loved one suffering from an incurable, life-threatening medical condition is no picnic. | ||

Jmho, I've not engaged in the Kola Wars in months, if not a year or more. Prior to this thread here, the last time I engaged in any significant debating is when Troy had proffered a poll to determine whether to ban her (which was, btw, NOT one of Troy's finer moments here). And even then I wasn't so much defending Kola's honor as much as I was defending her right to be as much an a$$ as the foks she frequently quarrels with. And the ONLY reason I got into some of that on THIS thread is because I was amazed (though certainly not surprised) by how quickly it turns into a Kola B*tchfest around here after she'd been gone so long (and please SPARE me the inanity of quarreling over whether she has been posting under some other name that I'm wholly incapable of or interested in verifying). Otherwise, I would have ignored this sh*t as I have for at least a year or so now. But I will admit one thing: I'm more inclined to side with Kola than I am her faithful detractors because 1) I agree with a lot of what she say (even when I regret the STYLE of her presentation), 2) I've learned A LOT from her and consider her to be an INSPIRING artist and person and 3) I simply LIKE her more than I do her detractors here. Personally, I thought JMHO was very articulate and logical in deconstructing ABM's arguments. And the idea that he, of all people, accuses somebody else of using verbiage as sabotage is a laugh. In trying to mount a rebuttal he, as usual, took a whole lot of words to say very little, all the while doing what he accused JMHO of. ABM says he's never derided Kola's detractors any more than "2 times" in the past 6 months, as if this is the equivalent to not attacking them at all and is grounds for overlooking how aggressive and displeased he was when he did attack those who exposed kola for the fraud that she is.
