Hi, Everyone. I am an up & coming author in the midst of writing my mfirst two books as we speak. I am all over the internet doing research on anything and everything associated with writing that will help me write a better book. Now my question to everyone here is this, for an up&coming young black female author, is attending the BEA 2004 this year worth it? I've been to BEA as a publicist and I didn't think it was the arena for unpublished authors looking for representation. It's a booksellers convention first and foremost and you might be better served attending a Writers Conference with name writers, agents and editors in attendance. There are quite a few prestigious ones coming up, and others that have a reputation for helping authors with finished manuscripts get representation. Hurston/Wright has a conference coming up in the summer, Breadloaf and Sewanee are two competitive ones, Squaw Valley in California, Southampton Writers Conference. Check out shawguides.com and then go to the websites of different conferences. I would pass on BEA and go to something specifically for writers rather than booksellers.
