I am not a professional writer but rather a historian and I want to publish a work of fiction with historical overtones. Does it matter that I don't have a English degree or am not a writer by profession? Should I give it a shot?

GO FOR IT! And don't listen to anyone who says you can't do it.

When I was an intern at Harcourt, I was discouraged from reading (and forget about recommending) manuscripts written by non-writers. I've seen several of those manuscripts published and think you should follow your heart. Even if you have to self-publish and practically give them away, you'll feel much better for doing it.

I agree with Micheal and Ronn, you never know until you try that you should or should not do something. Especially in the writing world, there's so much material out there now that you'll find your place with or without a decree.

Melisha:

All the professionals had to start out somewhere, too, and they were wannabes when they started.
