Hello All, As far as books goes, this summer promises to be hot! There are oodles and oodles of books coming out by some of our favorite authors. Let me give you a brief run down. 1.) Some People, Some Other Place by J. California Cooper. True enough the book is tenatively set for an October release date, but I can surpress my joy. Cooper is one of my top favorite authors of all time. I'm looking forward to this new novel. 2.) Drive Me Crazy by Eric Jerome Dickey. Dickey's latest novel promises to be more up my alley than his last one. From my understanding, Dickey returns to some of the characters from his previous novel, Thieves Paradise. I can't wait. 3.) Camilla Roses by Bernice L. McFadden. I'm going to start Miss Bernice's new novel this week. I'm just plain tickled. 4.) It's All About the Moon When the Sun Ain't Shining by Ernest Hill. I was so impressed by Hill's previous novel Cry Me A River, I know his latest one is going to be a treat. And what a GREAT title! 5.) Havoc After Dark by Robert Fleming. I know you all have heard of this book from us before. Well, its finally out and please take me at my word, it is excellent. Finally we can add Fleming to our ever growing and ever impressive list of AA science fiction/horror writers. 6.) Tell The Court I Love My Wife: Raced, marriage, and Law - an American History by Peter Wallenstein. Yep, we, America, still got issues on the black-white love relationship. I'm going to have to read this one myself. | ||

7.) Ride Or Die by Solomon Jones A Romeo and Juliet love story set against the backdrop of Philadelphia's drug war. "Symptomatic" by Danzy Senna will be released next month. Her stunning debut, "Caucasia", was well-received by the literary community. Thump, we've got to discuss "Camilla's Roses." I really like it. "Leaving Cecil Street" is a winner as well. I'm glad Diane McKinney Whetstone is back. | ||

"Let The Lion Eat Straw" by Ellease Southerland I understand that this book in being re-released after 25 years. It's suppose to be an amazingly wonderful first novel about a black family. Think J. California Cooper -- I'm told that the writing is beautiful and the story very touching. Maybe this re-release is a sign that the present AA literary trend is about to shift....... | ||

Hello All, Solomon: By all means you're on the list. I look forward to reading it. *smile* Whistling Woman: I haven't forgotten about Nichelle Tramble's new book at all. As a matter of fact, she will be joining us for an on-line chat in August. I'm sure that will be a lively discussion to say the least. I may have to shanghi my Ol' Grayhead for that one, since we still disagree on Daddy Al. You all know I got my issues with ol' Daddy Al, with his mean, hypocritical self. I haven't been sent the galley on The Last King. I'll let you know when I get it. *smile* | ||

Hello All, Oops, I forgot to answer some posts, my bad. Anita: As soon as I'm done with The History of the African-American People by Strom Thurmond [proposed], I will read Camilla's Roses. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm pretty anxious to get started on it myself. I don't know about Diane McKinney Whetstone's new one though. Her last novel Blues Dancing book left me cold. We'll see. Sir Thumper: Newbie to your board. I ordered a galley copy of a book by Van Whitfield on E-bay that's due out this summer. Read it and laughed out loud throughout. It's called Dad Interrupted and it says it's a sequel to his first book, Beeperless Remote, which I haven't read. Lot's of funny lines about fatherhood, dating and the like. Have you seen this? It's my first read by him. I read that his last book was in 2001 - 3 years ago? What's up with that? Does it take that long to write a book? Have you read any of his stuff before? Has anyone else here? I never see him mentioned on the site and I thought he was pretty funny and very sharp on observations about single dads. Love your site! | ||

Hello All, Book Brother: Welcome to the discussion board. I have read just about all of Van Whitfield's books. I like them a lot. I especially loved Beeperless Remote. You are a brave man bringing up Beeperless Remote. The reason being, it seems that every man who had read it, loved it, while some women hated it with a passion. As to why it take a long time between books for some authors and not others, I can't answer that. The answer differs for each author. Usually, authors have more than one iron in the fire. Often it takes 3 or more years for authors to write a new book. Writing is hard! A really GOOD writer has to be in love with a little thing called the REWRITE, being edit by three or four different people at the same time, and still handle the business aspect. Writing is more than a notion. I'm glad that Van is coming out with a new book, especially a sequel to Beeperless Remote! I've missed Van greatly. | ||

Camilla's Roses by Bernice McFadden is another great read. I will chime in when it's discussed. I'm so behind in my reading, especially the new releases, but I'm definitely taking notes. I hope to read Camilla's Roses though... Bookingmatters, I also read and truly enjoyed Better Than I Know Myself. I'm currently reading Success Never Smelled So Sweet by Lisa Price and Hilary Beard. It's the story of the founder of Carol's Daughter and how she took $100 and built a multi-million dollar empire. So far, it's remarkable! I don't normally do much non-fiction, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to get this one. I was also reading What You Owe Me (finally), but after the first section, I lost interest a bit. I hope to pick it back up when I clear off my reading list a bit, because it wasn't a "bad" book, I just don't think I was prepared for the switch from one character to the other. - Tee | ||

Thumper, I also read Havoc After Dark earlier this year and enjoyed it. It was great seeing Robert Fleming writing in a different genre and style than we normally see him. Though I'm not overly fond of short stories, because they leave me hanging, I would definitely recommend this one to horror/sci-fi fans. I hope he'll get around to a full length novel one day. Nina Foxx and Marissa Monteilh also have new books this summer and don't forget Parry Brown's Fanning the Flames and Mary Monroe's Red Light Wives. I'm also looking forward to The Team by Dawson Perkins and the continuation of L.A. Banks Vampire Series -- The Hunted. Oh, and did anyone mention Tastes Like Chicken by Lolita Files yet? I hope to read that too, I just received it as a gift yesterday. So many books!! I've never read Diane McKinney Whetstone's work before and I've heard mixed things on Leaving Cecil Street, so I think I'll hold off on that one and go back and pick up one of her others first.
