I know as any artist who creates anything, you are subject to criticism. However, I think Erykah Badu said it best when she gave a disclaimer before singing a new song (Tyrone) she created: Keep in my mind I'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my sh**.

Writers, what tips, tricks and/or suggestions can you offer for developing a thicker skin regarding negative (not necessarily always constructive) feedback to your published work?

How do you cope with hearing the same constructive criticisms at multiple book signings/discussions? Do you get tired of hearing about it? How do you respond to it?

Hello LL,

First thing I do...is listen to the critique, and see if it all can help improve my writing. If it is indeed constructive, then it doesn't feel so bad, and I think that maybe this person knows what they are talking about and is really trying to help me. Bottom line, if they come off negative, challenge yourself by writing a better piece, story, novel.

Literary--

I can't remember who said it--but somebody said the only way to deal with it is get a rubber butt because you sure are gonna get kicked in it.

Writers tend to be sensitive, solitary souls who wilt in the bright light of exposure--

Gotta get past it. Use the negative feeling. Exploit it. Be open to it. Sometimes the critiques are not merely malicious or ignorant, but correct. Sometimes they are malicious or ignornant.

Keep writing more stuff. If that doesn't work drinking until you are in a state of stupefaction might--just don't drive afterward

Well, Literarylicense, you convince yourself that there are 2 types of critics: Those who like your work, and those who don't know what the hell they're talkin about. Then you kick your dog, and mope around for days. Once your bruised ego heals, you begin work on your next writing project.

All:

That was the late gospel singer Martha Bass who made the "rubber butt" comment.

Thanks all.
I wonder if I can order the rubber butt from eBay. :-)
