Hi Everyone,

I found this website while doing research on African American writers. I am a writer, editor and poet. I absolutely LOVE to read books written by African Americans, about African Americans, and about African American history.

I just joined the group today. Can anyone tell me which book I should be reading? I saw the book for January (about Jack Johnson, I think) but since it is almost the end of January, I am not sure if I should read that book or start with the one in February (by J. California Cooper).

Thanks!

Missbrandy, there are so many books on this site it would be hard to pick just one (though you might take a look at my novel, "A Vampyre Blues, The Passion of Varnado)

What kind of books do you like? Fiction? Nonfiction? Poetry?

You came to the right site to find out about AA Literature!

Hi, Missbrandy [waving hands]:

Good to meet you.

I've noticed that poetry as a genre is starting to blow up again, has it been separated into sub-sets (topics) as of yet, if so what to you write about?

Is any of your work available on Amazon.com?

Hello All,

Missbrandy: Thanks for dropping by the site. I hope you will become a frequent visitor. *smile* In answer to your question, start whichever book you come across first. The Unforgivable Blackness book is a whopper, coming in at over 500 pages. I don't know about you, but it took me more than a minute to get through it. As it is so close to February now, go ahead and start the J. California Cooper book.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I feel welcome!

There are so many books on the site, but I love that. I absolutely fell in love with my favorite genre being on one site.

I do not have an poetry available on amazon.com....yet. I decided I wanted to write as a career last year. Since then I realized that I write slow (smile) so in the meantime I should edit instead. I am editing a non-fiction book on the craft of writing right now. It is set to be published by the summer of this year. I am also doing some volunteer editing (fiction/short story submissions) for a website. I have one published poem titled "The Essence of a Woman." This year I decided I would do what I had to do to not be considered a "novice" anymore. I thought it would do me some good to network with other writers online. I am also doing some research because I want to write a black history book. The book would be about influential African American people who haven't been mentioned with the "mainstream" African Americans the United States tends to spotlight. (I am in no way saying they are not influential people as well!) Whatever books I write, I want one of the primary markets to be African-Americans. Reading these books will help me learn how to do that.

If anyone has any suggestions of how I can get leave the "novice" title behind, please let me know! Thanks!
