I didn't do one for AALBC because I don't really frequent that part of the site, however you could do a review for them as well by going here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006AWSS/104-1006554-0419133?url=aalbc. com/february2003a.htm

wow, 300 pages, that is a book. hahahaha

Seriously, to the author of this book, Amazon.com doesn't have a picture up for your book, and there is no editorial review, or any other reviews; come on now, call a friend or twenty, get the ball rolling. Even if you made a million on the book already, go for the billion.

Loose Ends
by Electa Rome Parks

and 'THE TIES THAT BIND' hit the mark, in terms of great marketing, folks this should be the standard.

Take a look at the whole set up, not just the quantity and quality of reviews, but all of the other stats as well. Basically, all of this info creates a demand for the product.

That shows me that homework was done, and persistant energy expelled until the payoff was perfected.

Here are the links:

You said: "... I am curious, how you selecting the books to post links to over at amazon.com? Is there a criteria or just selecting books by random?"

The most direct answer to the first part of your question is addresses with this link:
http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1/1162.html?1105554766

To properly address the second part of your question I will outline the purpose of the thread.

Initially, my objective was for us as members of this board (club) to show some actual (non-monetary) support for a resource that we value and use. I’m shock and very disappointed to see the lack of reciprocatory [if that is a word, if not then I just created one, haha] in this very simple yet very meaningful way.

Given that many Black authors frequent the board as members, as well as, as lurkers, and know the value vested in good and numerous reviews, I felt encouraged, secondarily, to include them in the ‘network exchange of cooperative appreciation’ [hmmmm, catchy]. As you see there are over 25 authors presently noted, if each of them paid homage to thumperscorner.com via review the site will have more virtual power, which quickly translates to more interest, and additional sales for all involved.

In this same vein, if each author gave every other author in the club their book, you could expect to have at least the club membership number of reviews.

My bottom line is to appreciate and maximize the resources we have, because we know they are scarce and they won’t last always.

Please don't be too proud to post your book link, or the book link for other member-author(s).

Amitenejah, I'll have to read the other thread, if and when I have time, but I was asking mainly if there was a 'rhyme or reason' as to the books that you have listed, since there are literally thousands (or perhaps tens of thousands) of books by black folks listed at amazon.com

Come on folks, show some support for our own, not just the site but also each of the authors members of the site.

Thumper, would you weigh in on this subject (thead).

Amitenejah:

Thank you for taking note of my mystery novel, "A Perfect World: A Perry Richards Novel." You really have pumped energy back into my spirit by what you did.

I really didn't do much to market the novel this past year -- the number of sales on Amazon reflect that. I have hired a publicist and put together a small marketing war chest; we will see what happens.

I think you have touched on the big picture -- lack of support from people whom one thinks have a vested interest in seeing that books blacks are promoted. Perhaps the issue for some with my novel is that I wrote it not so much as a mass appeal book, but as a novel that has intentional literate and intellectual aspects to it. (Hey -- its not Toni Morrison, J. California Cooper or Ralph Ellison, but that wasn't my intent.) Maybe the "snob" quality I tend to emote played against me.

My experience with Amazon has been eye opening, to say the least. I know several reveiws that people made me aware of, got "lost in the system." An interesting thing happened regarding a group of reveiwers. This group declined to review my novel because another online book club gave it a favorable nod. I suppose they wanted to slam it for some reason. That is utter bullsh***t and game playing. It is also a form of elitist immaturity.

Here is the imporptant thing for me: validation of my writing talent. A film director I know has an interest in the book for a possible movie. It may never happen but I happen to respect this man's ability. The fact that he smiles discussing
my work is very uplifting.

I am going to keep writing -- learn for my mistakes and improve on the foundation. A house built of rock cannot be ignored. The euridite Perry Richards and his family will be back sooner than later.

Peace and blessings to you,

Bernard

Bmcn:

Powerful and motivating move, write on!

Here’s a suggestion that most in your position already know but often overlook (or simply forget), Black newspapers want your story!

Black newspapers across the nation want to highlight your success, and in many cases, they are willing to interview you and do a big story (with photo) about you.

If you think you need some additional reason for the ‘press release’ or ‘request for interview’, contact a few Black clubs/associations at local colleges to arrange a free or fee based speaking engagement, writing workshop, or what have you.

Try to coordinate the Black newspaper interview(s), Black radio interview(s), and Black cable TV interview(s) with the actual function.

Of course all of this attention helps to sell books, you as an influential intellectual, and leads to other deals, but more importantly it shows our community that we are successful in many ways.

I’m hoping the TC fam takes your lead and performs as well individually.

Would you share one or two of your marketing-success secrets with the TC fam?

Amitenejah, thanks again!

Secrets of my marketing success? Lets see. . .
You have to be slightly obsessed. Heck did I say slightly, you have to be highly obsessed with the promotions/marketing of your books and name(LOL). So obsessed that you can't sleep at night because marketing plans are spinning around in your head.

For those of you not into obsession, there are other marketing strategies that have worked for me as well. I'll share two.

1. More bang for your buck!

I always try to allocate dollars to marketing efforts that will reach the largest number of readers who are in my target market, i.e., ads placed on AALBC.com.

2. Use the Internet to your advantage.

I love the Internet! Internet marketing works for me. It's relatively free and readers are just a click away.

Of course, I use other avenues as well, but those are probably my top two. Adding to that, I have used an outside publicist since the days when I was self-published. After being picked up by Penguin Group (NAL), I now have a house publicist, but I still retain my outside publicist. And. . . I continue to hustle in the true spirit of self-publishing and entrepreneurship. That is still entwined in my blood (LOL).

And last, but certainly not least, being picked up by Black Expressions Book Club as a main selection (LOOSE ENDS) was very instrumental in further getting my name and titles in front of the reading public.

Well, that's my two dimes and a nickel!

P.S. Also, something as simple as signing everything with a "signature line" that contains your titles and website address is beneficial.

Hello Electa not Electra

Come on tell them the truth. Tell them it was your association with me and the wonderful reviews and shouts I've given you over the years. You can tell how you begged me to review your book and how I finally gave in after you showed up at my door step *smile*. Hey, you told them that they have to have an obsession and buddy, you had one. Okay love, don't forget about us little people down here on Thumper's Corner. Don't ever forget!

Sshhh, Carey! That was suppose to be our little secret. See, now, you've gone and let the cat out of the bag (smile).

Forget? Please, why or how could I forget (smile)? I haven't gone anywhere. I'm simply living out a dream. Other than that, nothing has changed.

Peace,

Electa

I truly hope those 'two dimes and nickle' get spent over and over again like the 'five loaves and two fish' (hope I got that in the right order) feed the multitude.

I read your beautiful TC.com review on amazon.com, it was clearly heartfelt.
