Hello
A fool and his money will soon part. I don't know if the movie "NOTORIOUS" will make any money but it was outrageously, notoriusly, terrible. I can't even say it was a waste of talent because there was NO talent on the screen. Biggie's son looked like him but all else failed. The actor that played Tupac, had nothing in common with him and his acting stunk. The women that play the part of faith was much more prettier than her. Not that faith is not a nice looking women, she just didn't fit her image. I thought I would at least find some enjoyment in some of Biggie's songs. They didn't even use any of Biggie's soundtracks. Can you believe that! Then there was that overbearing Puffy. Gosh, the guy we see on a regular basis was the same character on the screen and again, we see to much of him.
There was absolutely nothing to this movie. I was trying hard to find something I liked about it. I couldn't find a thang to hang my hat on. I would rather have watched 10 Tyler Perry movies than to have watched that, and you know me and Tyler do not get along. I would have preferred the 3 stoogies over that mess. Heck, at times I thought I was watching the stoogies ....4 or 5 of them.
What a waste of time and money. They are lucky that this flick came out in 2009 because this flop would be right behind Eddie Murpy's "Norbet" at the top of the Razzies. Yes, the hall of shame. Shame on all of them that put this together. From the screenwriter to the director and the casting agency, all of their faces should be posted in every theater as frauds. I am sorry. Sorry I wasted my time watching it.

Well Jackie, I didn't even want to go there with Ms. Basset, but since you asked. She didn't have much of a part and it wasn't a role with much meat to it. I think she may have been included in the movie for her name. She appeared in the movie as a young mother that had a child by a married man. Biggie was about 10 yrs old when we first saw her. I believe the scene intended to show us that Biggie didn't have a relationship with his father. The man came by and offered biggie's mother (Basset) a few dollars as some means of support. We then find out that he was married. She throws the money back at him and we never see him again.
I don't know if Biggie's mother was suppose to have an accent but she made reference to "coming over to this country". Angela Basset, just like the rest of the cast, was mis-cast. She was to old for this part. There wasn't much for her to do in this role. One scene we see her laying in a hospital bed. In another scene, she's the grieving mother. This will not go down as one of her memorable roles. Well, that depends on what you choose to remember about it. |

Gee, Carey, you and the critics certainly don't see eye-to-eye. First you dismissed Tarji P. Henson's performance in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", and she just got nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for this role. Now you're panning "Notorious" which got mostly 3 star ratings and which opened up in second place last week, pulling in 26-million plus at the box office.
Could it be that you hold black performers to a different standard than other critics do?
BTW, the Eddie Murphy movie nominated for a Razzie this year is "Meet Dave", not "Norbet". |

First, I don't know what critics you are talking about (very important) and there are plenty of actresses and actor that have received various nominations and awards that plenty do not agree with, check it out. I didn't say Tariji did a lousy job. I still believe this was not Tariji Henson's greatest performance. What does 3 stars tell you anyway? And who gave the stars? To me, 3 stars is real close to 2 stars.
If box office gross was the deciding factor to greatness then we wouldn't need awards. We would simply have to look at the money each has earned. Hey, my money was part of the millions, so what does that tell you? ..."All money ain't "good" money.
Yes, I and "some" critics do not see eye-to-eye. I wouldn't even want to look through their eyes.
See, that's the point. I think it's important for a movie lover to find a critic that they can relate to. Some men like women with big asses. Some prefer top heavy women. Others like nothing but the breast meat ...white meat.
Have you ever paid attention to the little blurps on the movie covers. On every single movie there's something good being said about that movie. What does that tell you. It tells me that "good" ain't always good.
Now, you know my boy Thump is the best book critic that I know. He does not compromise his integrety ...imo. However, he has recommended books that I didn't like. Yet, I was able to understand where we differed. If you can put a face on the critic, I then would be able to research his history of reviews and then voice a better opinion about his selections.
Yes, I may be on the other side of the fence than "some" critics but the movie still stunk ...IMO.
I don't care if the lead characters were green with purple poo-poo dots, I look at the movie. I do however believe that there or "some" that just love "black" movies because they can relate to the cultural events of the movie and therefore hold them to a lesser standard.
I hold all movie to a very tuff standard and "NOTORIOUS" fell way below the mark.

Me thinks you doeth protest too much, Carey. It wasn't really necessary for you to defend your opinions. I didn't chatise you for not being in step with other critics, or did I disagree with your observations. I acknowledged that you were apparently applying a different set of standards.
But nooooo. I'm expected to wade through a marathon explanation when, in responding to my comments, a simple response of "So What?" would've sufficed. |

"Notorious" opened in 4th place,
Cynique, not 2nd.
Angela Bassett--though she will
be remembered as the "mother or
wife of every iconic black figure
from the Jacksons to Malcolm X
to Biggie and Rosa Parks"
--is really keeping her career
stagnant with these roles.
She needs to produce a project that
gives her something "meaty and unexpected,"
because she's very boring and predictable.
Though many criticize Halle Berry, this
is the reason that I so admire Halle--she
takes risks and she constantly takes parts
that are against "type" and challenge the
status quo.
Angela has limited prospects--she's older
and isn't offered nearly as much stuff as
Halle--but she CAN produce things; she can
do a stage play or do something inventive
like...
...play God and Satan in a rock music
video.
Do something that reminds us that she's
RELEVANT.
I have lots of plans for films I'd like to
make that would star Angela Bassett or
Viola Davis--meaty, multi-dimensional parts,
but they're not anything "predictable."
I would particularly like to cast
Angela Bassett as "twins" in a noirish
suspense mystery.
One twin would be like Anna Magnani (the
great Italian film actress I love so much)
and the other twin would be Garbo-eque,
glam-glam and sexually diabolical.
A dead child would hold the key to the
mystery.
The male lead in the movie would be a
White Minister.
One of the twins, though we don't know
which one--would end up biting off the penis
of the male lead at the end of the movie
(it wouldn't be shown graphically; but
as one of the twins walked down the road
covered head to toe in red tulle--you would
hear screams and people shouting that an
animal has ripped his manhood off.)
There's a very old song by Patti and the
BlueBells called "All Or Nothing" that would
accompany the scene in a quasi-music video
montage.
The final shot would be the twins under a
tree next to a pond. The Garbo twin braiding
the Anna twin's shock of springy nappy hair
as their two sets of eyes--completely different
eyes--stare into the pond's surface.
I would pan in very slowly...long enough
for the audience to be engrossed by the fact
that Angela is so completely these two different women---and for them to be itching to know which
one committed the de-dick-ting of male lead.
This is all off the top of my head, but my
point is that Angela needs a really powerful
"Bette Davis styled" movie role that allows
her to transcend race and perhaps breach
religion and sexuality.

ONE THING I have noticed with Black American
Women and West African women in the arts is that
they're very conservative. They like to
play it safe and they're obsessed with being
"dignified"--what will people think--or they
want to copy what a White woman has already
excelled at.
Look at how boring, predictable and limited
Black Women's Literature is right now due to
the fact that Black Women Editors are now the
gatekeepers of it.
Too much conservatism; too much re-hash and
too many "sisters they like" instead of
really inspired voices that push the envelope
and excite the store patrons.
This is very true.
One thing I blame is Western Black Women's
ball and chain attachment to the Christian
religion and their plantation roots ordering their shame at being black.
They shun what they don't understand instead
of investigating it.
They believe that anyone who is larger
than life is "fake"---and they resent
any "black woman" being cosmopolitan.
They reject anything that celebrates them
in their natural state.
They don't take chances; they don't want to
risk "saying something first" or pay
attention to what the MASSES of BW
are talking about RIGHT NOW.
They're always 10 years behind and they
think boring the fu/ck out of us is
"intellectual" and "classy."
A piece of paper (college degree) pretty
much girldes their backbone.
We won't ever have another Josephine Baker
or a Zora Neale Hurston or a Grace Jones as
long as Black women are in charge of the
picking and choosing--because those type
of black women SCARE "ivy league sisters".
And this is what I see with Angela Bassett's
screen career and how it's become so mired in
"STRONG BLACK WOMAN of DIGNITY AND CLENCH
JAWED JOAN CRAWFORD BLACKNESS."
I really admire that Halle has not allowed
herself to be a "SYMBOL."
I so agree with Katharine Hepburn, Alice Walker and Bette Davis's recurring assessment that:
"A woman artist should always be willing to
not be liked."
That it's the #1 sign of enduring
artist achievement and merit.
I would rather follow in the footsteps of
the controversial, interesting "boat-rockers"
Bessie Smith,
Zora Hurston,
Josephine Baker,
Julie Dash
Nikki Giovanni
Grace Jones,
Alice Walker and Millie Jackson
--women who were at one time considered
"weirdos" and were controversial and actually had something to say (and said it first) and
whose work was original and DIFFERENT, which
is why they're actually remembered today.
I wish to God that I could get a film loan and
get a hold of Angela Bassett.
She is gifted and she deserves to make at
least one SUPERLATIVE non-racial ICONIC
motion picture before it's too late.
She---and Black American and West African
women, in general, need to come completely
out of the box.
Put the fucking "church"
and the "tribe" in perspective
and get a fucking life.
Stop trying to be some
illusive SYMBOL that wasn't
our creation in the first place.
What we as black woman want is
to be loved/cherished, respected
and acknowledged.
We are not like any other women on
earth.
We are "pot liquor" from strong greens;
a full-bodied and deliciously rich brew.
It's us who are supposed to be doing the
dictating as to what "womanhood" is--not
the establishment; not the Daisy Chain.
Black women "artists" have become way
too conservative; too constrained; too
myopic and too boring.
The White girls (and Kola Boof) are doing
all the daring shit.

BTW, "Notorious" came in second place in the first-day openings on Friday, January 14th. By the time the week-end was over, it had slipped to 4th. |

NOTORIOUSLY TERRIBLE! Let's see, 4th place ...uuummmm. I wonder what pictures it lagged behind? They have to be great movies since all dem critics just loved Boretorious ...right?
I wonder if Li-Li saw them.
It sounds like the rabbit and the hare to me. It broke out of the gate and peetered out. It's not the man that starts the race the fastest. It's the man that finishes strong. It's a fact, movies that the producers think are not up to par, come out at the start of the year. Well, here we go again. |

Saw what? ::glaring at Carey:: LOL I watched The Visitor and Australia both by the way with black themes and why they wont last at the box office. I really enjoyed Australia and The Visitor was ok.

Jackie,
It's always been my dream to start
my own publishing company.
Unfortunately, I've never been able
to raise the "Capital" that it takes
to finance and operate one even on
a small scale.
I do think, at this point in my
career, though, that I would be
very successful at the marketing
and PR ends and that I would
sell a lot of books if I were
in charge of it.
But once you have Kids and
you're old and nobody's dying to
fukckk you anymore (at least not
for "Invest" sake)...it's really
hard to get that kind of cash.
I do wish I could have kept the
jewelry Bin Laden gave me all
those years ago.

I absolutely loved the movie and saw it twice. I was invited to a private screening several weeks before its release and I took my daughter to see it in the theater. To each his or her own but they did a phenomenal job on the film, in my opinion. I have seen very few negative reviews of the film, VERY FEW.

Oh lawd, Zane, you have made Li-Li's day. You're absolutely right, to each his own. I ain't made at cha even though you snuck in the little "VERY FEW" ...very few negative reviews.
I am going to give you a pass today *lol*. How can I argue with a woman that said she saw it twice. AND said she went to a private screening. I could say something about that but again, I am going to let you slide ....today. Now if you come back up in here I might let it go ....might :-). |
