We had our cat Scratchy for 19 years, and Sunday she died after suffering a fall. Even though lots of folks aren't feeling cats, my friends and neighbors have been compassionate and understanding recognizing that pets are ALMOST like family members.

We live in a condo and are debating on getting another cat or welcoming a small dog into our home.
Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your loss. I know how attached one can become with their pets. Although I currently don't have any pets, I am an animal lover. I brought my mom’s Lab from Ohio to Cali since she is no longer able to care for him. He is staying with a friend. He is a beautiful dog (Golden) and still thinks he is a puppy although he weighs about 105 lbs. You lap is his lap. That’s how he sees it. So when you sit down, he will to try and sit in your lap. My mom spoiled him to the bone!

I had pets all my life growing up in Ohio and all our dogs lived a reasonable length of time. Most tapped out at around 13 to 14 years (dogs). My best friend had a dog named Joe who lived to be close to 20 years old! I did not know dogs could live that long. She just had her cat put down that was at least 19 to 20 years old. Please consider going to the animal shelter and save an animal’s life (at least go an look –please!) . Another cat or perhaps a small dog like a Daschund or Min Pin. My two cents.....

105 pounds!! Yikes, that's like feeding a teenager. LOL.

Yes, I will definitely go to the animal shelter when I decide. Silly me, I thought they gave away pets at the shelter. Come to find out, my new cat or dog will cost about $165, shots included. Oh well, the $$$ goes to a good cause.

Awwwww Robyn, sorry about yr cat. About two weeks ago, I went to Park Pantry with my mom and I met a man and his female boxer named Sunshine. Sunshine is a Katrina survivor. He adopted her after she was abandoned in New Orleans. I thought that was pretty cool. I didn't know you had your cat for 19 years !

Sorry about the loss of your cat Robyn. I've had both dogs and cats. Generally, I think cats are easier to deal with but dogs are more fun. Take your time, visit the shelters and maybe your new cat/dog will find you there.

Yes, Ms. Jackie. Scratchey just walked up to our place on Orizaba and we decided to keep her. Her mother had abandoned her. I never had a cat before, I only had dogs as a kid. Scratchey was black so I figured she was looking for an AA home. She had been acting strange the past couple of months. It was just her time to go.

I am all cried out. My daughter is devestated. Hope to have the new kitty/puppy in time for Christmas.

I have heard some animals at shelters are sickly. Is that true?

Thanks, Crystal. Pet lovers are cool.

Hello All,

Robynmarie: I am so sorry to hear about your cat. My cat Baby did a few years ago. She was just over 9 years old. My other cat, Lady, I got Lady and Baby at the same time, a week apart and Lady is still going strong...geting on my damn nerves. Lady is 15 and a half years old.

I can't talk about every shelter, but I got my second dog, Callas, from the city pound. She was healthy. I took her to my vet within the first week afterI got her and she got a clean bill of health. I don't know about the shelters in your area, but wherever you get your pet, take it to the vet for a check up. I'm glad I got Callas from a shelter. The shelter was clean, orderly. Visit one and see for yourself, but don't be surprised if you walk out with your new family memeber. I did and wasn't intending too.

If you're looking for unconditional love, a dog is, indeed, your best friend. As they say, even Hitler's dog was faithful to him.

To me, Cats are gentle but aloof. I was given a kitten a couple of years ago and she and I got along just fine until she went into heat and got preggers. I knew I should've had her spayed, but I just kept putting it off. So not only was I mad at her, I was mad at myself, and I kept ballin her out for going out and getting knocked up and expecting me to take care of her litter. Then one day, she just disappeared. I think she had too much pride to stay. :-(

Your cat was fortunate enough to live out her 9 lives, Robynmarie, and now she is somewhere purring in cat heaven. Be comforted.

My hesitation about getting a dog is we live in such a small space. I always felt like dogs need a yard, a fence and a leash.

Dog don't need a fence, a yard or a lease if you like the smell of poop. They don't have ajob and don't wipe themselves. They drag their nasty behind across furniture and your carpet. Stay with the cat. Ours was named Socks and Puff.

Robynmarie I am so sorry to read about your loss. To lose a pet is like losing a family member and hurts the same. While my ex-husband kept our german shepard, when she died from cancer I was very sad. She was 12 and lived a full life.

Robynmarie, I'm sorry for the loss of your kitty. I always thought I was a "dog person" until I got my two cats (now also gone to the great cat-beyond). Having them in the small apartment I lived in at the time was ideal. Yes, they were "aloof" as Cynique said, but that was good as their behavior kept me humble! LOL

Robyn, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I had a big baby, a red doberman named Romeo. I had to give him away when I moved, no apartment complex would let me keep him. I gave him away to a family with a farm. Didnt even sell him. I knew he would be happy there. I drove to see him a few times but had to stop it was too devastating.

I always swore when I buy my new home I want to get a black and red one....even got the names, "Diamond" (a red one) and "Spade" (a black one)

Happy hunting for your new kitty and take care.

Hello All,

Robyn: Let us know when/if you get a new kitty. I love kittens. My Baby, she loved me straight off. She had to eat every morning. She would lick my face until I woke up and got out of bed and fed them, then she was cool. She could lay one me and not irritate me. She played fetch, like a damn dog. If Baby was still alive, I doubt if I would have ever gotten my dog Sasha. Now Lady at times irks me. See, I got Lady first. And she came into the house fussing. She meowed all day, every day. I lived in an apartment and every day I would come home from work and this kitten would meow/fuss at me for hours. I would come in the door and she would be sitting on the arm of the loveseat and start meow/fussing. Then one day I came in and didn't see her on the loveseat arm. I though, now how did that b_tch get out--it's quiet--YEAH! i started doing a little happy dance and then crashing through my joy like a drunk driver--I hear meow. My feelings were hurt. I looked around the apartment, I didn't see her, but I heard her. After about 30 minutes, I gave up. I looked everywhere I thought, until I saw one of my chester drawer move. Yep. That heifa was in my sock drawer. By the end of the first week, I knew what the problem was...she was lonely. A guy that I knew at work had some kittens that he wanted to git rid of, which was how I came across Baby. With Baby and I, it was love at first sight. So, I wrapped her in my coat and took her home. I opened the door and there was Lady, starting her fussing until I opened my coat and sat Baby down. Lady was right as rain then. Lady started off wanting to play but Baby wasn't having none of that. She was wanting to look around the place and follow me. Lady and Baby were roughly the same age and size. So Baby was walking around, ignoring Lady, and as you know by now Lady is not one to be ignored. So, she playfully jumped on Baby. *LOL* I have heard people say that you can see what your cat is thinking, I'm a believer. Lady jumped on Baby, Baby turned around and gave her a look like "B_tch, if you don't get off of me"! *LOL* I ROLLED ON THE COUCH HOWLING WITH LAUGHTER! They turned out to be very close.

I got aonther funny story. In my apartment, I had a glass top dining room table with a white stone base, with four white cloth chairs. Beautiful set. When Lady discovered that she could climb up and down my chairs, all I heard was clothe snapping. After I had taken the kittens for their last shots, I asked the vet when could I get the fixed. Because there is nothing worse then dealing with a cat in heat, then when you throw in another cat in heat into the equation, ah HELL NAW! I ain't built like that! The vet told me that they were old enough. I told him that I would call and make an apointment when my money was right. I got them home and the first thing I heard was Lady climbing one of my chairs. I called the vet back and asked when I bring the kittens into get fixed, can he do their front claws removal at the same time. He said he could. After a couple of days of hearing that kitten on my chairs, I couldn't take it anymore. I made my appointment. Happily dropped them off and got my mind set to enjoy a quiet week at home. I found out that I was not that hard. After two days I go calling the vet with my lips sticking out asking about my kittens. They said that the surgeries went fine and that they were raising hell meowing and fussing. oh yeah, Lady strikes again. I knew it had to be Lady, but the receptionist said that it was both of them. Ah hell no, I'll be there in a minute to pick them up. The receptionist giggled at me and said that they were OK now, they had to put them in the same cage so they are fine now. Saturday, I get up bright and early and march off to the vet to pick up my kittens. Boy, they were happy to see me and I was happy to see them. We get home. I walk through the door, and set the kittens on the floor. What I'm about to say is the God's honest truth...Baby goes to the kitchen to eat. Lady makes a beeline to the nearest white dining table chair. She jumps on the back, lands on it spread eagle and slowly slides down the chair on to the floor...like Bugs Bunny or Wile E. Coyote on the cartoons. Once again, I ROLLED AROUND WITH LAUGHTER! Cats, they are a trip.

I did get a piece of valuable advice about cats from, believe it or not, the Catwoman comic book. Even after I got Baby, Lady would not come to me. I'm a big Catwoman comic book fan. I was reading the latest issue and Catwoman tells this man that if he wants a cat to come to him...ignore it and pretty soon the cat will come to you. I tried it out and it worked! It not only worked with Lady, it worked with my brother's cat Magic.

Thanks everybody for your condolences. I am waiting to receive Scratchee's "cremains." (Pet disposal is big biz, but that's another thread.)

I never in a million years thought I would be the type of person to worry about burying an animal. I used to roll my eyes at folks who dressed their pets in designer clothing , took them to therapy or purchased insurance policies.

I would never go that far for a critter, but Scratchee was with us for a part of three decades and a proper burial seemed like the right thing to do.

Thumper, you have marvelous cat stories. Would you say perhaps two cats are better than one in a household...they can keep each other company?

I'll have to check out Catwoman comics(wasn't Halle Berry a Catwoman once?)

I learned about cats from seeing the musical of the same name.

Jackie, I am trying to see the silver lining in this situation. At least now I can think about getting a bird. LOL>

Writing about this on TC has been very helpful. Thanks again all.

Hello All,

Robyn: As far as getting two cats instead of one...I guess that depends on the cat. Lady just happen to need a companion. I've had cats in the past where they loved being the only one.

Man, why did you bring up Halle Berry and that miserable movie. I could not believe how they jacked up that movie. First Halle Berry didn't want to wear a cat suit. HELL, what is Catwoman with a CAT SUIT! As the picture you posted illustrated, who in the f_ck ever heard of a super hero wearing OPEN TOE SHOES!! It defies logic and common sense. Now this is how Halle Berry should have Catwoman look...

OK!! This is what I'm talking about!!
