We were rolling today in cali-a 5.4 on the Richter Scale. For those who have never lived through a quake, it feels like airplane turbulence and it takes a minute to realize what is happening. Quakes, only last a few seonds but it feels like forever until you stop shaking. I rushed and stood in a doorway and tried to gather my cat. Thankfully there were no deaths, serious injuries or property damage. The news media sounded kinda disappointed about that. LOL. | ||

Perhaps being on the deck of the Titantic would be more accurate? Everything is swaying and shaking and rumbling at the same time...car alarms are going off and I am always afraid something will happen with the eletrical lines causing a massive fire. | ||

Yes, Yvettep, it was terrifying because it is so random. At least with hurricanes there is a warning, but experts say they can't predict earthquakes. They caution "the big one" is around the corner. YIKES> | ||

I'm originally from the Midwest (although I got into a fierce argument with a woman who told me Ohio was not part of the Midwest -AND SHE IS FROM CLEVELAND!!!! WTF..??!!) but living in North Eastern Ohio (15 mins form the PA border) we never experienced hurricanes or tornadoes. But they have some mean thunderstorms. Yikes!! I remember the rumble from the thunder would be so loud, the house would shake and the windows would rattle. You would have to put your hands over your ears because it would sound like an explosion. IT WOULD LITERALLY HURT YOUR EARS IT WAS SO LOUD. I don't miss that. I remember my first earthquake experience in California. I was a night student going to MK 92 Fire Control Integrated Radar/Weapons Systems school. We were in class studying and doing labs. Around 2130, there was a slow grinding rumble and then the building began to shake. This was a huge concrete cinder block weapons building and we were on the fourth floor. As I recall -my heart stopped! Everyone just sat with the deer caught in the head lights look and said nothing for about sixty seconds. The Cali guys just laughed but the rest of us were paralyzed. I had never experienced anything like that (up to that point) in my life. The only thing I can say is if you have never felt and earthquake, it will put the fear of God and nature in you! I've experienced a few more since then but I have never gotten used to it. I also remember once when I was at home in an apartment, I thought the entire building was going to crash down on me. You're lucky if you have never experienced an earthquake. Trust me -it's an experience you can live without! | ||

Rain doesn't necesssarily accompany tornadoes which resemble black funnel clouds in the sky as they roar through an area, devastating everything in their path. If you are not in a tornado's path, you can escape disaster. These spiralling winds have been known to reduce one side of a street to rubble while structures on the other side are left in perfect tact. They uproot trees and scoop up cars. Just last night, tornado-like storms ran rampant through Illinois and Indiana, wreaking havoc. | ||

^^^YIKES! Sounds surreal. Apparently, tornadoes will happen anytime of year? Without warning? We have something we term "earthquake weather" out here. Balmy, overcast skies, dry heat usually happening in late Spring early summer. Funny thing is seismologists say we have little quakes continously on a daily basis. Some are just more profound and louder than others. Urban legend is when the "big one" hits it will be so powerful it will separate california from the rest of the United States. | ||

Summer is tornado season. We don't have them in the winter when it's cold and snowy. I guess you don't know about that kind of weather. I don't think that's necessarily an "urban legend" you're speaking of. Seismologists have predicted that a massive quake along the St Andreas fault is on the horizon. |
