This is a follow up post from this coversation: http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/38658.html

CNN's "Black in America" was one step above a reality TV program.

The journalism, if that is what it is called nowadays, was virtually non-existent. People just said anything and it went unchallenged.

For the record: I don't care where you live in Harlem, you can find a fresh tomato within walking distance. You don't have to travel an hour via public transportaion, as CNN would have you believe. The problem is they KNOW this is not true CNN just let the statement ride.

I could go on, but I have a newsletter that has to go out today. This is a email I recieved today regarding the CNN broadcast"

"...for serious analysis you record the how/film and on the 2nd go-round of watching, you turn the volume off to see how the images are used including the commercials in addition, you clock the show that precedes and the show that follows this gives you a more complete picture of what your brain is taking in what messages are being conveyed."

Someone from CNN had the nerve to liken this show to "Eye on the Prize"?!?

Don't EVEN get me started...

I agree. This show was a sob story designed to invoke sympathy from gulit-ridden white folks. For those who don't share this sentiment, it just reinforced their negative impressions of black people.

Cynique, regarding the white folks exactly!

Placing CNN's nonsense aside for a moment: Is it true that 20% of the black population of Washington DC is HIV positive?!?!

Are we running around bitching about some noose hanging from a tree, or some BS Imus is spewwing when a 5th of DC will likely die from AIDS.

Someone please tell me that this is another "Harlem Tomato" story.

"Placing CNN's nonsense aside for a moment: Is it true that 20% of the black population of Washington DC is HIV positive?!?!"

Disgusting and inexcusible.....

"Are we running around bitching about some noose hanging from a tree, or some BS Imus is spewwing......"

Which has zero impact on the lives of black Americans. The hysteria over such petty and insignificant BS only serves the media and the attention starved race hustlers who make a living from sensationalism and hyperbole.

".....when a 5th of DC will likely die from AIDS."

That is a mind boggling and incredibale statistic. I wonder whose fault it is? Hmmmmm.......

They also claim that AIDS is the number one killer of black women between ages 25 and 44. Seems incredible.

I had the DC adis stat wrong. It was 1 out of 20 or 5% -- still staggering.

Cynique given women 44 and younger should not be dying of natural causes given the above stat AIDS being the #1 killer is not suprising...

I'll see what I can do to raise awareness.

I think homicide is also in the top 5 for Black women in that age cohort. (Of course it is widely known that this is the case for young Black males, but many do not realize the mortality from homicide for young Black women.)

Yes as a resident of Maryland...the D M V corridor does have the highest rate of HIV/AIDS...that is due in large part the the IV drug users, but there is also a heavy DL and gay population...as sad as it sounds yes Troy, it is true...
