My wife TIVO'd Michelle Obama's appearance on The View yesterday. So I decided (via spousal extortion) to watch it.
Michelle was very charming, lovely and quite funny. She could quite easily host a talkshow if she wanted to.
One of the highlights of Michelle's visit was Whoopi Goldberg citing how it a pleasure to see a bright and lovely Black woman like Michelle regularly appear in the media because so often all we get are uncouth, inarticulate, toothless or grilledfooted sistas. Whoopi added that is especially gratifying so see such attention given to the DARKERSKINNED Michelle Obama, versus the whiter/lighter vintages of African American beauty we see featured.
My wife and I agreed somewhat with Whoopi, though we both found her comments somewhat ironic seeing as both she and and another DARKERSKINNED sista Sherri Sheppard appear on THE VIEW, a show that's watched by 10's of millions of people five days/week.
What is your HONEST - non-political, non-axe-to-grind-against-Whitey - view of how decently and accurately Black women are being represented in ALL of the media (and I am NOT just talking about Hip-Hop videos)?
And do you think Michelle has or will help broaden the pallate from which the media choses to paint the imagery of BM, especially those who are darker and browner? |

I'm not convinced that white people spend all of their time watching hip hop videos. As far as how black women are represented in the media, like white women, they run the gamut from air-head types like Paris Hilton to shrews like Hillary Clinton. They are what they are.
As black women go, the intelligent, articulate, personable, copper-colored Michelle Obama has many peers. The only extraordinary thing about her is that she happens to be married to a man running for president.
And I think Blacks tend to underestimate white people's ability to realize that all black women are not dumb skeezers. IMO. |

(100% correct. This is 2008 not 1958. White folks have been seeing Black women on tv for a long time.
Those who don't want to see anything by dumb skeezers will never change.
Whoopi is so pathetic sometimes in her longing for them folks to love us.
She had a good experience with some white folks in the arts world and can't see why we all can't just get along like that, not understanding artists are different, and besides she was a woman.) |

I think it depends on where White foks live.
If they live in a major metropolitan area, they probably have LOTS of opportunities to interact with Blacks who do NOT conform to many of the negative stereotypes often exhibited via the media.
But if they live in Small Town USA, flyover country, many of the smaller Red states, etc., where they have very few, if any, regular, peer-level interaction with Blacks, they probably ARE much more influenced by what Whoopi describe. |
