(The most astonishing twist of the entire primary season---IMO---came when HRC (inarguably the most refreshingly unconventional first lady of our lifetime and potential champion for woman's rights) went from being "a viable woman candidate" to "race man"...the most Sharpton-like candidate for prez this year.
A fighter for the Appalachian Rush Limbaugh set, HRC is now a "race man."
Who'd have thunk it?
*The irony? HRC ended up looking like Sharpton and Jackson NOT Obama*  ) |

I blame it all on the corrupting influence of Bill Clinton.
She should have divorced him right after they left the White House. |

This was going to be problematic from the get-go, and is indicative of that campaign's effort to have things both ways. Initially I was interested in HRC's campaign materials that used her first name only, distancing herself from perceptions of her husband's presidency. THe feminist in me found troubling a woman running under her first name--it brought to my mind images of even professional women being refered to by first names when men are given the respect of their titles.
But, I reasoned, maybe the campaign is thinking that the use of Hillary "softens" her image.
But then at various later points, I suppose she was told to come across as "harder" and more masculine, and that was reflected in her language and demeanor in ways that was very jarring. I particularly found troubling that the campaign seemed to take as a compliment characterizations of her such as that she had "testicular fortitude" instead of decrying them as the sexism they were...
Also, whatever disentangling of perceptions of her husband that was achieved by that move was messed up when she decided to bring him out for the benefits of his "brand name" recognition. It seemed to me that this was done strategically--for example, I think her campaign assumed he would waltz into African American neighborhoods and rack up votes on rep alone. Later, I think he was used to strengthen a lower income, Appalachian White base...
Then, of course, the campaign has been a little bipolar about how to characterize her "experience" as First Lady, with sometimes disastrous consequences.
As someone with daughters who would love for them to see female presidents in their lifetime, I surely hope future candidates use this campaign's playbook as an example of multiple things that should not be done. It has just been a hot mess. |
