The following article appeared in yesterday's Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, and it really resonated with me and a lot of other readers. It was written by columnist, MARY MITCHELL, who is black.
I am sick of politics. Practically everyone I bump into tells me they are sick of politics, too. I'm weary of the distortions, half-truths and outright lies that candidates feel compelled to tell in order to get our votes. I am sick of trying to figure out who is lying and who is telling the truth, and I worry that there will never be an end to the game of tag.
For instance, when I got back from lunch today, there was a fax on my chair:It was handwritten in black marker, and read: "Which Democratic Candidate has endorsed anti-American statements? Not Senator Obama. He has disavowed Rev. Wright's Anti-American rants. It is Senator Clinton." Apparently, Clinton was on stage with Harry Belafonte in 2005 at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation event when the actor said: "There's a lot of people out here who are really pissed off. I see American policy written on the walls of oppression everywhere."
My anonymous writer either thinks Wright was wronged or Clinton is getting a break. See? Sickening.
Enough with the debates. I've had it with rallies, speeches, debates, and press conferences that are diced into sound bites and buzzwords.But Lord knows, I don't want to sit through another 90-minute debate where the goal is to get the candidate to say something inconsistent, inflammatory or stupid rather than to inform the American public.
Frankly, the latest blow-up between Obama and his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is a symptom of campaign fatigue. Not since the the civil rights era have the sermons of a black preacher been dissected the way Wright's sermons have been picked apart.
But before the Wright controversy imploded, I was already sick of watching Obama tip-toe around black people who apparently do not have the white seal of approval. Oprah, one of his most visible black supporters, has the seal. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who hasn't played a role in the Obama campaign, does not.
And you know what? No matter how much you admire these presidential hopefuls, after more than a year of seeing them on the campaign trail, they begin to get on your nerves.
I am sick of Obama's wide grin and his blue suits.I am sick of the way he touches his nose when he is being thoughtful, and holds his breath as he searches for the right answer.
But I am also sick of Hillary Clinton's high-pitched screech and her phony laugh. And her pantsuits are really getting me down. There's nothing that reminds a woman more of her matronly status than seeing a peer in a brightly colored pantsuit that tries, but fails, to camouflage her spreading hips.Hillary's know-it-all attitude is irritating, but I am especially fed up with her "I'm the luckiest woman alive to have a husband like Bill" routine that she launches into whenever she wins a state... Please give me a break.
Not just the candidates are tiresome. I'm also sick of seeing John McCain wave to a room of white supporters. Even though did he visit New Orleans' devastated Ninth Ward, which is predominantly poor and black, the clips that we see most often is of McCain and other whites. Well, I did see some footage of McCain with a black man, but the man was really old, and looked too much like a servant in a plantation-era movie.
And I'm already tired of McCain's ram-rod, every-hair-in-place, toothpick of a wife.
But most of all, I'm sick of seeing Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean's talking head tell Democrats that despite the muck the candidates are sloshing through, all will be well come November. How tired is that? |

Sounds like the woman is suffering from a very debilitating case of the "I'm sick of...." syndrome. Sad.....Perhaps she should seek counseling......shrugs.... |

I think Mary accurately identified her affliction as "battle fatigue". As I noted, what she said came through loud and clear to me. This campaign has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. IMO. |

Not at all.
It's just now you got a Negro in here taking it up the ass, flubbing his lines, flip flopping.
This is nothing to the way they are going to ream him if he wins.

This is not a typical campaign by virtue of who is running; a black man and a woman. If there is a historical precedent to this viscious marathon of racism and sexism and classism, chrishayden, then please cite another time when it occurred.
Politics is a game. And its not for the faint of heart. Whoever wins the prize will be case hardened enough to take it up the ass - and retaliate.
And who is the "YOU" who wanted this? Are you excluding yourself because you didn't want a black man to be president? Of course if Obama loses, you'll have enough "I-told-you-so" taunts to gloat about for years. Patting yourself on the back for nothing is how you get your jollies.  |

The fact that for the first time in our history there is a real possibility that our next president
may not be a white male warrants extra discussion.

(As I stated, and you ought to know having been present and alive for the last--oh, 40 out of 43 presidential elections, it has been in everyone.
It is just now YOUR ox is getting gored. For instance, remember Willie Horton? Remember when hey were saying John McCain had a black baby out of wedlock? Remember when they said Bill Clinton had a black baby out of wedlock.
I realize that the old gray matter is fading to black bit by bit--but you could still ask somebody or use this wonderful internet for research and get the goods.
No, you'd rather go deeper into oblivion, playing cards on the web.
What a waste of time, effort and electricity.
And you are always talking about Ghetto blacks wasting time and extolling Bill Cosby.
What do you think Bill Cosby would think about you wasting time, playing card games on the web? |

Can we cut through the diversionary subtefuge and give a straight forward answer, chrishayden? When in history has a presidental contest pitted a black man against a white woman and lasted this long and evoked this much controversy?
And, like playing cards on line is keeping me for saving the world or changing America. Even you should be able to figure out that such things are out of my hands. And I might add that this activity is a lot more fun than your favorite pass time of trolling the internet looking for blogs to reinforce your stale contentions.
Card playing has a long tradition in the black community and is an activity that dates back to the time of the pyramids. So go back to reading your comic books, crissy boy. |
