What Happens To Obama's Supporters If He Loses?

Jason Zengerle

Obama's not so sure they'll go to Hillary. Here's the relevant bit from an interview he did with the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody:

BRODY: Will Hillary be a drag for down-ticket races as a presidential candidate?

OBAMA: I think there is no doubt that she has higher negatives than any of the remaining democratic candidates. That's just a fact and there are some who will not vote for her. If you look at the results in Nevada, for example, she eked out the popular vote victory over me, but I ended up winning more delegates because she got almost all of her votes from Clark County, Las Vegas and some of the traditional democratic areas. We got votes there, but we also got votes in northern Nevada and rural conservative regions of the state that traditionally don't vote Democratic, but were excited about my campaign.

I have no doubt that once the nomination contest is over, I will get the people who voted for her. Now the question is can she get the people who voted for me? And I think that describes sort of one of the choices that people have, just a practical choice, as they move forward." [Emphasis added.]

(Tonya: Some seriously consider his statement a "threat")

This isn't a "threat", girl. Obama's citing a very PLAUSIBLE consequence to Hillary being nominated. Hillary has ALWAYS had lots of negatives (more even than Bill!). And she's definitely turned off LOTS of Black foks, the Democrats most dependable voter, with her and Bills cheapshotting Obama.

It'll be A LOT easier for the GOP to effectively campaign against Hillary than it would Obama. Because, unlike Obama, the GOP Machine has NO qualms with getting deep, down and DIRTY with her and Bill.

What is he threatening?

POSSIBLE SCENARIO:Senator Obama could run as an independant (al la Joe Lieberman) and take all his Hillary haters with him. Would African Americans support such a move? I fear we could be "irrelevant" as Latinos take our place as the Democrats most reliable voting block.

That would not endear him to the Democratic party nor the people who elected him in Illinois. No doubt, if Hillary wins the nom, Senator Obama will toe the Dem line...as will she if Obama wins.

The GOP will have no trouble running against and defeating Senator Obama. People already think they are racist, so their tactics will be open and shameless, starting with Senator Obama's support of driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants. The Republicans will have a field day.

"I fear we could be "irrelevant" as Latinos take our place as the Democrats most reliable voting block."

This is why the Black misleadership class WILL finally be fired. There is no way they will remain after making this huge a blunder. The last thing African-Americans needed in these turbulent times (AIDS, housing foreclosure, crime, poor housing and schools, ect) was to be made even more irrelevant. But that's exactly what happened when Mr. Clyburn and the Black misleadership class pulled an ill-advised strategy that was based on complete and total nonsense.

I have no problem getting rid of the Black misleadership class. It's just a shame that had it to come at such a mammoth expense to Blk ppl. And this will affect all Blk ppl too, even the Black middle-class.

Tonya-
do you think AA would support Obama as a third party candidate? Some people are vowing to stay away if Hill gets the nom. You know the "take- my- ball-and -go -home" strategy. LOL

I know you did not direct the above to me, Robynmarie, but I have heard all sort of scenarios--some more plausible than others. Some think that not only would an independent run by Sen Obama garner his current supporters, but depending on the nature of the final GOP ticket, may sway a considerable chunk of moderate/disaffected Republicans, independents, and new voters.

I do not know how realistic that is. And I agree with you that such a move would not be in his best long term interests as a player in Democratic Party politics.

But I am very happy that folks are talking and debating about this. How long will folks who feel ignored and underserved by our current two-party system continue to support it because it seems that we have no other choice? I've heard an analogy of this with regard to African American voters and the Dems--someone noted it reminded them of women who stay in abusive relationships because they feel they have no other options. Now I think that is a stronger statement that can be seriously made about current politics, but I can see how some folks may feel like that.

Now, full disclosure: I happen to live in a state that actually elected an independent to the office of governor so I may have more faith in citizens' abilities to go down a different path than others have!

Hey Robyn,

"...do you think AA would support Obama as a third party candidate?"

I think some would, but I think most will rather see a Democrat in office than a Republican. Barack is only getting 10% of the white vote in S.C.; that's down from 20% only a week ago. Before long these #'s might drop on a national level even more, and I think it'll all be because white folks don't like BC being charged w/racism when there's no clear evidence to support this. So, Barack is losing the white vote, the non-black women vote, the Latino vote, and who knows what more. He can't win as a 3rd party candidate with only Black support, even if he manages to get all of it. Plus if McCain does win the republican nomination, he's not a shoo-in for the independent vote either. So I believe most Blacks will look at this and decide they'd rather see a Democrat, even Hillary, win office in Nov.

Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if the "Bradley effect" indeed affects some Blacks in S.C. as well. Studies suggest that Black folks are not exempt from this phenomenon, unfortunately. I also wouldn't be surprised that some Blacks are SAYING they're voting For Obama simply to sound like they're "down for the brother", especially in what's got to be a hostile environment with Obamanazi’s erroneously equating a vote for Obama with a vote for "being w/the Brown down". Puleeze. Even though they themselves haven't been down w/the Brown for damn near 100 years.

LOL@ "Obamanazis". Excellent analysis of Senator Obama's 3rd party chances. I am actually shocked at how little support the Senator is receiving from whites. Perhaps when plotting out BO candidancy, his (white) advisors theorized that if they could run a black man who was "clean" as Joe Biden put it, the masses would heal. But BO is not reaching the lower income whites who are convinced that when Hillary is elected they are going to get a check.

This election is far from over, but BO needs to come from behind the lecturn and speak to everyday people, forget about transcending race, cause it will never happen.

This is a new century and a different time. Anything can happen and a fragmentation of the American 2-party system can be a sign of things to come. America is becoming very polarized and divided by race and religion and liberal and conservative and the united states is becoming an oxymoron. Will the fate of the Roman Empire befall this country?????

If I want a Republican I'll get a real one. These DLC Democrats are just Republican lite.

Vote Republican and send the country down the tubes.

Robyn...

I'm not sure if this is his idea of breaking through the class barrier but it will be interesting to see how comments like the ones below will play out in his efforts to court Blacks. IMO he needs a better advisor...though it's funny that a Black man needs to be advised on how to act around Black folk....gol, times a changin!

You know you're in South Carolina trolling for African American voters when you find yourself in Kingstree.

The population, according to the most recent census, is 64.6% black. Even the local tributary is the Black River.

Bill Clinton was here recently, and on Thursday morning Barack Obama stopped by to make his case.

The normally buttoned-down, Harvard-educated lawyer loosened up for his predominantly African American audience, exhorting the hundreds of supporters who crowded into the Kingstree High School gym to dig deep into their family trees for Saturday's Democratic primary.

"Everybody's excited about this election, but everybody has to vote," Obama said. "I need you not only to vote, I need you to grab Cousin Pookie to vote; I need you to get Ray Ray to vote."

This is the second time Professor Obama invoked the spirit of Pookie in his campaign. Someone must have told "Barak" "Pookie" is what black people call their male children. Gawd, what a nerd.

I wonder if when speaking to white folks he talks about cousin Jethro and Billy Bob?

IMO, the people who really stand to loose the most if Hillary wins the nomination are actually white Americans. How so, 1) because they will have fallen for the Clinton dupe, 2) the growing minority population will finally realize what has happened and retaliate, 3) the world (of which more than 3/4th's are people of color) will revile the perceived injustice, 4) they will have no escape from the eternal label of "racist", and much more. Speculation, of course, but then again, the mere thought of a non-white President being extremely popular and even more successful just scares the hell out of the current white majority. It seems to be the same old problem as perceived anyway -- that is that white America (as a generalization) constantly thinks that everyone else is stupid.
