Y'all know Spike Lee hurt my heart. I was sick. That St Elmo mess rocked me to my soul. I know that's not the name but it should have been. Yeah, tickle me Elmo. He played with my money.
But what about a time called NOW. My soul has been healed. I just watched Soul Men. If you don't like to hear brothas say MFer, stay away. But listen, that's how we talk...okay. Bernie Mac and Samuel Jackson had me rolling. My girl thought she was at home; stood up and started dancing. The old school music talked to her feet. I laughed out loud several times. Why do we laugh when a person says M****R F**KER in just the right way. Bernie and Samuel took it to a new level. Now don't get me wrong, the cussing wasn't the only thang that grabbed me. Yeah, am old school and the music talked to me too but Bernie and Samuel were perfect together. I am not a critic so am not going to hit you with all that critic talk. I'll just say the S**t was funny. Know look, Kam gave Balls of Fury 4 Stars...NOT! He raised the roof for Tyler Perry...I think not!
Here's the set up. Bernie and Samuel were part of a Soul Trio. The lead singer played by John Legion died years after the group broke up. He was still on top. Samuel fell on hard times; robbed a bank and everythang. Bernie had a "Big Booty" car wash and did alright for himself. After they separated from the lead singer they tried to make a go of it but fell out over some mess. I can't tell you what it is because it's an intregal part of the movie. They became enemies. However, with the passing of ol'boy they had to ride together on a road trip. Let me tell you, they got shot, robbed, f**ked, everythang but they mangaed to get to their destination. Now some more s**t breaks out. One of them ends up in jail and the other has to break him out. Listen, this s**t had me laughing like I was in my front room. This is a black movie for black people. Check it out and let me know what you think. But remember, if you don't like cussing keep your stankin' ass at home. |

Hello Chris
You haven't been listening. I said, that's not the name of the movie. But then again, maybe you didn't read my post on Spikes last movie. I cried all over the board. I had to walkout halfway through the movie to get some air; it stunk. The title gets away from me. I don't even wish to think about it. All I remember is "St" something .... Anna Somethang...and that could be wrong. |

Miracle of St. Anna?
I haven't seen it, but the book was awful and I don't see why Spike made a movie of it. |

Surprisingly enough, "Soul Men" ain't doin "jack" at the box office. Like "Miracle of St. Anna", and "The Express" which is the movie about football star Ernie Davis, looks as if "Soul Men" will have a short shelf-life and go straight to the video stores.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry is beating a path to the bank. |

I understand, I said this was a black movie for black folk. As long as Perry puts on a dress and walks below the radar, he will continue to go to the bank.
The nation may be ready for a black president but they ain't ready for us. As long as Tyrone lives across the tracks or in that other neighborhood he's cool.
That reminds me, the white folks in the movie theater (Soul Men) wasn't laughing. Some were chuckling but just like their dancing, it was off the beat.
I am not speaking for "The Miracle" or "The Express". I didn't see The Express. It didn't look like anything I wanted to see. |

(I haven't seen "Soul Men" but I heard it stinks. The mass audience, even the Black one, wants to see Black Pathology at the boxoffice. Gangsterism, New Tomism, Clowning, Sidekickism, or Cross Dressing Black Mammyism)

(And the next time a white person says you remind him or her of Madea, you need to just chuckle and ask for another slice of Watermelon.

In the first place, white people outside of the industry inner circle have no idea who Madea or Tyler Perry are so the idea of them comparing me or the younger generation of black females to her is unlikely.
In the second place, I can take or leave Tyler Perry who has found a simple formula for making money. I was not praising him, I was simply making an observation. |

Maybe it's time for you to champion a few flicks. It's easy to talked about "blacks". It's not easy but you know what am saying. What does "Chris" like?
I knew what you were saying, Cynique. You were simply saying that some picture fly high while others fall to the ground and the reasons are varied.

I went to see Soul Men this afternoon. Ironically I just told someone last night, when I went to see The Secret Life of Bees, that I did not think I could see Soul Men so soon after Bernie Mac's death. Well, I did go see it and I loved it, not having any expectations going in. It was not like The Secret Life of Bees, which was excellent and heart-warming, but it was hilarious. At the end, they did a tribute of scenes and interviews with Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes before dedicated the film to them, including outtakes from the shooting of Soul Men. I cried because it was beautiful and Bernie Mac said a lot of things about life that most people need to hear or be reminded of.

I loved the outtakes, I sat there totally spellbound. I agree, it was sort of sad to see Bernie and Isaac Hayes in the same scenes. What was your impression of the rest of the audience? Did they laugh out loud. I guess it might depend on the city and time of day. You know us, we can let loose at night.
Yes, it was nothing like The Secret Life of Bees. What did you think of acting of Alica keys? I enjoyed the whole movie, it was tender. |
