Hello All,

I am almost done with White Rat by Gayl Jones. The book is wonderful, as I knew it would be. There is nothing easy or light with any of these stories. Each of the stories have an edge, the edge that is found in all of Jones's novels. The stories Asylum and Your Poems Have Very Little Color in Them strikes me as being autobiographical. There is a couple of stories: The Women and Jevata, I wish she could have turned into full blown novels. I am so sorry to see that I'm going through the book so fast and the end is coming up. I have to give the publisher, Harlem Moon/Random House for selecting this collection for re-publication again. Though Jones's literary output is slim, I am happy that most of her books are now in print and available.

YAY!!! I'm glad you started it. I am going to look through it tonight again so I can talk about a few of the stories that stood out to me. I tore through the book too - can't wait til you read the stories from what seems to be the hubby's perspective.

Hello,

I just finished White Rat. This is a marvelous collection! Now the stories I believe was told from the hubby's perspective is Version 2, Your Poems Have Very Little Color, and maybe The Coke Factory. I wonder why so much of the stories theme revolves around mental instability?

I love her writing and now I'm going to miss her.

I wondered that too, especially since that seemed to have been written way before she was institutionalized the first time (that we know of?)!

Either that or that was quite prophetic. I know her husband was batshit insane and they'd gotten together around that time the collection was published so I guess that was it.

I'll be back with more thoughts, been a minute since I read and need to get back to it - was all up in my Poets & Writers last night!

Hello,

Nom: take your time. I decided this morning to make it a CWMYB reading selection. Yep, we are starting that one back up. I'm a little excited by it!

Thumper, now that I know what CWMYB is, I'm excited too. LOL I was confused at first!

It will be so wonderful to be able to discuss these stories at length with MANY others who've read and enjoyed them.

Do you think you can work on contacting Gayl Jones and maybe even having her participate? Maybe she would enjoy it!
