Definition of a Lesser-Known Writer: a Lesser-Known Writer (a.k.a an "LK") is a writer who is aspiring to literary greatness, one word at a time, and making strides toward getting the word out about them and their work. LKs are ever-evolving, knowledge-seeking and slight show-offs, meaning they don't mind showing off their work.

I'll ask again...are you a Lesser-Known Writer? If so, you're invited to be a guest blogger for the Chronicles of a Lesser-Known Writer Series on The Official Blog-Zine of Author Terra Little. Feature an excerpt from your work, introduce your character(s) or tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do. You're a writer, use your imagination!

Every well-known writer was once a Lesser-Known Writer. How will you be remembered?

All (most) common genres accepted, with the exclusion of racist/discriminatory, hate oriented, gratuitously abusive, or outright pornographic works. Send your submission to the Rhona Barrett of the Blog-Zine Scene at writeterralittle@yahoo.com today! You're not afraid of a little reader feedback, are you?

Lesser known than who? Or whom? Or what?

"Lesser-Known" is another way of saying new or beginning. Lesser-Known than more well known writers. I gave a fuller description on my blog, when I first began the "Chronicles of a Lesser-Known Writer" Series a few months back.

Fair enough. It might sound better to say, "Undiscovered talent" or "Hidden jewel" or "Next Big Time Best Selling Smash Hit".

I prefer to refer to myself as an "Underground" writer--or "The Notorious B.I.G. of Speculative Fiction", "Mr. Dynamite", "Soul Brother #1" or "The Amazing Mr. Please Please Please"

But seriously...I get your point, Chris. Not knocking Terra's position at all, but I do prefer "emerging writer" for myself.

Why is it that every time I post something over here it gets analyzed to death?

On a basic level, any writer who is lesser known, regardless of compared to who, what, or when, is lesser known. The concept is not meant to be taken in a negative light. It is, in fact, a slight poke in fun at the notion of a literary hierarchy. I may be lesser known now, but I won't always be...that type of thing.

This is America, so we are all free to refer to ourselves however we want to. But somewhere in the hustle & grind of trying to do whatever it is we're trying to do, can we have a little bit of a sense of humor? As an emerging writer, you don't have to swear yourself in to the lesser known writer's club, to find a piece of some of your best crap and email it to me to have it posted on my blog

Someone suggested to me that I open up my blog to guest bloggers. I agreed with the suggestion, so that was all I was trying to do...dang.

Now I just got off work, and I've been sitting up in a prison for longer than I wanted to be, so excuse me if my nerves are a little frazzled...

Not knocking Terra's position at all...

I think this bore repeating.

And everything everyone posts here gets analyzed to death, lol. Thumper can't even talk about not liking big books without Chris accusing him of being obese. ;-)

Once something gets posted, it's fair game for...well, just about anything.

The concept is not meant to be taken in a negative light. It is, in fact, a slight poke in fun at the notion of a literary hierarchy. I may be lesser known now, but I won't always be...that type of thing.

That's your intention, but of course others may indeed take it in a negative light, but no one is "right" or "wrong". To each his own. You have your reasons for not calling yourself "The Notorious B.I.G. of Speculative Fiction", I'm sure. I think it's fine if we all have preferences for one phrase or another "for ourselves".

Now, after a hard day in prison (I'm sure you've got stories!!), you deserve a nice cold glass of something. Cheers!

I don't think the issue is humorlessness on anyone's part. Humor itself is subjective, so you end up with "lesser known writer", and Chris ends up with "The Notorious B.I.G. of Speculative Fiction".

I am just patting myself on the back for exercising restraint because I wanted to suggest that authors who haven't made it big yet just call themselves "wanna-bes".
Talk abut poking fun at themselves, on the contrary, most aspiring authors take themselves much too seriously considering the odds against penning a best-seller.
Agreed that encounters here on this board do tend to shell shock newbies because the taunting shifts them out of their comfort zone.

Cynique,

I will agree to being shifted out of my comfort zone if I can add the qualifier that my comfort zone is one that is relatively drama-free. A good debate doesn't frighten me, but a, IMO, insignificant one tends to leave me wondering.

Why taunt folks for no good reason? Some people can take it; some can't; and then there's people like me who might engage in a little light-hearted banter from time to time, if the mood is friendly, but who don't really respond well to the other stuff. The, "Cute shoes, but aren't they plastic?" stuff. Just say they're cute, if anything has to be said, and leave it alone.

Wanna-be, emerging, super-duper-fly writer or whatever, it all still means the same thing - lesser known.

And shut up, Carey. How do you know "Cyn-Cyn" was responding solely to my term? You wouldn't happen to be at the front of the line, dipping your toe in the dirt, would you, kind sir?

Carey, I believe I have figured you out. Finally... Why you be instigating stuff? Ahem, I mean, why do instigate things? You were one of those kids in school who, when other people got to arguing, you said, "Why don't ya'll fight about it?" Weren't you?

I disagree. The different words/phrases have different connotations for different people, beyond the basic meaning. If there were no differences, everyone would use a single phrase. That's not to say that one is universally better than the other, so I'm still puzzled as to what the problem is here. Some of us welcome the "debate" (I prefer "discussion" or "differing perspectives"), and "insignificant" is in the eye of the beholder. My comments aren't directed at anyone who doesn't care to discuss the topic further.

And Mr. Carey? Stop instigating! Nobody kicked dirt on anybody. Another old school thing comes to mind: Did y'all ever play "baddest man hit my hand", when kids were about to fight? Where you needed a middleman to facilitate the first punch? Why was it that kids needed assistance because no one wanted to throw the first punch? They would fight like animals once things jumped off--but no one wanted land that first punch.

LOL, Cynique. I'm trying to be more Zen about it. Tell myself that numbers don't matter. But every time someone says, "You'll be on Oprah!!!", I start salivating a little and getting all giddy and daydreaming...

But really...I'd have to disagree that most aspiring authors take themselves too seriously, because not everyone is gunning for that best-seller, and I think that kind of attitude is more a function of personality than it is the nature of the (writer) beast. But I could be biased because I've been lucky enough to find writer-friends who don't take themselves too seriously.

You know what's interesting about the vibes some feel when others reply to their posts, I seldom see the nature of their compliants. Really, others may disagree or add a comment yet I am usually taken aback when someone cries foul.

Just as when I "instigate", I think it's so obvious that my motive is to poke fun or lighten the moment and to think otherwise just makes me shake my head. Just as when Kitty and I did the Sam Cooke thang. Thump wasn't moved by anything we said, he's grown and everyone else is too! Humor is a strange place in this cyper world. You know what.....I just thought of something. Hey, maybe the post talking about me being the instigator and the school yard match-make was said as a joke.....dahhh

Don't get me wrong, there's more than a few times when it's clear that the post is meant to hurt....yes sir buddy.

Kitty, why you jumpin' on me....I got your back :-).

Carey,

Since when you develop thin skin? Much as you jumped all over me when I first came aboard, I know you ain't sniffling now. In the beginning, there were a few posts of yours that had me wondering, "What I do to him?" Took me a minute to get used to your sense of humor, but after that, no worries.

So now, what are you going on about?

I think we need to put this thread to bed, everybody kiss and make up, and wait for the next te'-ta-te'. What 'chu think?

LOL, Carey. I wasn't serious when I talked about you instigating. Now, don't get me wrong: You ARE an instigator! But I know you do it in jest, and I respond in kind.

But otherwise, I'm right there with you in often not seeing the complaint/reason to call foul. You know it takes something like...oh, say, MISOGYNY to get me to complain. ;-)

However, when I first started frequenting these boards years ago, I was very much taken aback. Cynique in particular ruffled my feathers. Ranting and grandstanding behavior was very easy to dismiss, but not Ms. Cynique. I had to bring my A game with her, lol. I didn't want to ruffle anyone's feathers here so I straddled the fence a lot, and over-explained myself, and I was most impressed by how succinct Cynique was with her posts.

So of course it kilt (yes, kilt!) me dead when Cynique skewered me one day on the boards, calling me out for my long-winded commentary in which I never took a true position because I was too busy trying to win people's approval.

Ouch. I think it's safe to say that that was the day I started to grow a thicker skin. ;-) Thanks, Cynique!

Here I go again

...and I think maybe I don't do such a good job of explaining myself here...

Sometimes - and I'm owning my own feelings here, so bear with me - I feel like the immediate reaction to a post might be slighty negative or off-putting. Like, there's no balance between good and evil, if you will. Like, "Hey, I don't agree with the term 'lesser known', but I hope people submit a piece or two to your blog" or something. So I don't cry foul (I don't think I cry foul at all, but, okay) because I don't want people to contradict or respond. Just to not always be so quick to point out every single flaw when they do. Even when somebody is getting ready to make you bend over, you appreciate when they think to use a little Vaseline in the process. When they don't, that shyt hurts. And let me hasten to add that I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, just giving an analogy to better illustrate my point. Or...like when your mama whipped your azz and then said, "I wouldn't beat the shyt out of you if I didn't love you." You still didn't like the whipping, but that made it just a tad bit easier to swallow. Not that you could do anything about it anyway. But, still. 'Least you knew you was loved. And I'm not asking anybody to love me. Guess I'm just not used to playing so roughly. That's what I get for always heading for the Barbies at playtime...

I feel you, Kitty. There was a time when we didn't have to register and of course the mess was all over the place. You could call yourself Boo The Fool and slam away! The next day you could be Willie Lump Lump and cuss-out yourself, the sh*t was crazy. So naturally I sharpened my skills in that arena. Not that I write any better (still don't use a spell check) but through that drama, I kind of know when a person is cuttin' or cutting up.

That's sort of how I know when Thump is about to let loose. He generally didn't reply to posts that took direct aim at him. Hell, he couldn't, they came to often and from various angle. But he has changed just a little. Today I laugh when he fires back because he never used to do that. So you know I fell out when he hit us with that...ahhh, "fat enough" thang *LOL*.

Even in that latest Chris-Thump thang (Thumps my boy, don't get it twisted) I thought Chris was really trying to be funny. But then again, I guess some thangs just ain't funny McGee.

I tell people all the time that Cynique and I have been doing this dance for some time - years. On the surface it sometimes looks bad but.....

Yes yes yes, I AM AN INSTIGATOR....there...I said it :-).

I think you hit on something. Some may get caughtup in what "others" think, I've been there too. Now....NOW, I don't care if I spell dog... C A T. Really, if you know I misspelled the word than you knew what I was talking about. Hey, lets break it down. Hey I am a talker, I just love hangin' around with all of you guys and your impressive writing. Don't get me wrong, some of it is....ahhh....well, just writng, know what I mean.

Clowns on the left of me, jokers on the right, stuck in the middle with you.

Okay, I'll let you be my friend again :-).

See Ms. Little, I tried to tell you when you first brought your dirty diaper a** up in here that you were moving to fast *LOL*.

Do you see how the vets do it? They cut your behind sooooooo smoooooth. Have you liking it and wanting more.

Heck, I just got my Platinum tag. I hated that "veteran poster" mess. I've had my dusty behind here since Troy hung his first sign. I felt like some old used up returning G.I.

Wipe that milk off you face and stop cryin'....yeah, you've been straightup cryin'. You may not have seen it as so but we heard it. As I read over your post, much of what was written wasn't even directed at you. And furthermore you let Chris jump you off. We knew he didn't mean any harm and so you was wrong through the door. What did ol'boy (the boxer) say in the movie "Harlem Nights"...."Don't take this ass whuppin' pa-pa-personally.....Ditto!

Welcome....

Obviously people react differently to the banter the goes on up in here. It seems to me that the more offended a person becomes, the more he or she empowers the person baiting them. Humor is a great equalizer so it helps to have a facility for ridicule as a form of retaliation, and certainly the bug-spray of indifference can serve to stifle a gnat pestering you.

I don't think Carey has to justify being an instigator. Being able to deal with an instigator is a great litmus test for newbies. I have no problem with mischief-makers as long as they can take what they dish out. I'm a contrarian and I like to challenge people who are steeped in their preconceived notions. I do this, fully prepared to withstand their wrath.

FK, you always give a good accounting of yourself and you really didn't need to heed my sarcasm when you first came aboard. One reason Chrishayden and I have an ongoing feud is because we don't try to get along with each other and I don't think our "audience" would have it any other way.

I like to think that I have "cyber instinct" reinformced by my Zen approach, and that I can read between the lines of a what a person writes, thereby enabling me to pick up on their vibe. Once I get on someone's wave-length I can kinda discern what the inflection of their voice would be, which is to say that a written comment on a discussion board may come across differently were it spoken in a face-to-face conversation. So oft-times we take people more seriously than we should or - don't take them seriously enough.(Duh!)

To Terra, I confess that I find your lapsing into street dialogue a little contrived but - if that's your weapon to defuse Carey, it is what it is. I am, however, more impressed with how meticulously you write. Obviously that's the "author" in you.

To Cynique - If you find my lapsing into street dialogue contrived then I will take that as a compliment, seeing as how I grew up in the inner-city and, throughout my teen and very young adult years, spoke exactly like that, almost exclusively. Still do at times, as my teenage daughter can attest to. I find that she understands where I'm coming from a bit better when I bring it like she needs it to be brought. It also comes in handy when dealing with a certain segment of my clietele, who seem to take me more seriously when I can actually understand exactly what they're saying and can respond in kind; when I'm "feeling" where they're coming from. This is but one of my many archetypes. Yet another is the "author" in me, better known as the Jeckel when the others are Hyding. I can be whatever I need to be, when I need to be, but Carey just has a tendency to make me go there with him, as he is well aware. Thanks for your comment regarding my writing. Much appreciated.

To A_Womon - I'm all over the Greater-Known Writer suggestion. In fact, you have just given me another one of MY brilliant ideas. LOL.

Hello Terra, you did a wonderful job of explaining why all of us speak the way we do in different situations....great job! Most good speakers know that, one should not speak over the heads of their audience. It could be preceived as " better than" and they will turn you off. Yet, it's a thin line. The flipside, if one is not careful, is appearing condescending or pretentious. As you know some whites think they have to talk like "us" in order to grab our ear, it's a big mistake. I have an oppurtunity to talk to "clients" simular to yours and although I have no problem talking on their level....*LOL...no problem at all, I've been told on occassion to dumb it down. But again, it's a thin line as I am sure you will agree. This posting thang is another animal. If the post is directed at a single individual then I think the dialog should stay in that vain, just as you mentioned in reference to "us", you and I. But of course, whatever is comfortable with you....then hey, do your thang. So I am agreeing with your brilliant reply to Cynique.

I must say you've crossed a bridge. Kitty said she used to be concerned with "sounding right", she's no longer there. What's right?

Carey,

One of my favorite quotes is: "If everyone is thinking alike, then no one is thinking." (Benjamin Franklin)

I'll add: "...then, after everyone wakes up from a boredom induced slumber, no one is having fun."

It's all good.

I must say you've crossed a bridge. Kitty said she used to be concerned with "sounding right", she's no longer there. What's right?

To clarify, Carey, literal "sound" was never my concern (i.e., "street dialogue"). What I've talked to you about is embracing the idea that what I write is not for everyone/won't be universally appreciated/approved of. I guess that's about my learning to be at home with my own voice, but not necessarily my literal one. ;-)

About literal voices, though: I've been told that I have one of those E.F. Hutton voices. I start talking, and a hush comes over the room. I dunno...I don't particularly care for the sound of my own voice. I have to listen to it a lot when I'm transcribing interviews, and...ugh.

I, like many black Americans, am "bilingual" (if not trilingual). I talk according to the occasion, and it happens naturally. I haven't lived in the South full time since 1989, and people tell me all the time that I've lost my accent. My friends here and my older daughter tease me that as soon as I cross the Mason-Dixon line (or get a call from someone below the M-D line), I fall back into my Southern drawl, my native tongue. It's so subconscious, I'm not aware of it until my daughter says, "Mommy, what did you just say???? I can't understand you."

Humm. I hope I'm not giving the impression that I am not bilingual. Most of us have our "telephone" voices and our neck-workin sista voices.

It's also been my observation that the cadence of your voice can establish rapport with "street" people. That is, you can speak perfect grammar but do so with a rhythm that identifies you as a homie. Anybody listening to Barak Obama in all of his eloquence, can still tell that he is black. IMO

Not to me. I assume most black folks are.

Absolutely. And again, I think most of us do this effortlessly.

LOL, Carey. You SOUNDED fine, but in the context of Terra's preceding post, I felt the need to clarify.

Speaking of sound, I peg you as a gravelly-voiced Barry White. Teehee.

This bore repeating as Obama is giving a speech that is uniquely HIM.

Let's see if that adult-infant-looking John McCain can keep us from nodding off with his rhetoric...*insert crazy rolling face Cynique is partial too, lol*

Yeah Kitty, I knew the writer in you had to clean things up a little. I sometimes forget all you wordsmiths see words a little differently than some of us or at least have to set it straight. So I was cool with your "spankin" *LOL*. Of course I couldn't resist doing what I do as well. We are in there, we cool.

Cynique hit me with the "sound" thang in another thread. She didn't lay me out as much as you so I just rolled with that punch.

You are so mean to me :-).
