Hello All,

I was looking at an old Fred McMurray movie on TCM this past Saturday. I'm not going to go through a summary of the movie, although it was good and funny as hell. One of the supporting characters was a bookie, who collected books, first edition books. He dropped a line on the Fred McMurray character that went something like this, A man who does not read GOOD books, has no advantage over a man who does not read!

I ought to make T-shirts with that one it.

Well, so much for those who contend that kids who read street lit should be cited for at least taking up the habit of reading.
And, of course, "good" is relative when it comes to books. Even literary critics disagree about what's quality and what's trite.

Hello All,

Cynique: you know I use to think that as long as the kids were reading anything, we should be grateful. But now, I don't believe it. It can't be any good when there are documents in our everyday lives that hold such importance that we must contend with that are not written on that dumb-down level as some of these so called books.

I am undecided about this. Some street lit can have a little redeeming value - the cautionary tales

Hello,

Cynique: I wasn't talking about street lit in particular. There are many a street lit book that I would put under this particular banner. I can put a number of books that would fit, sure there would be some street lit, but I've seen more of the so-called romance books that I would put under this banner first.

Thump, nobody does what you do better than you!

Okay, I am going to take this to a different place and see if my anology stands true and has merit. "Good" is relative, that's true, however it's also true that good is not always good for you. I think we can agree on that, right? I also believe we are victims of our environments, consciously or through other means. Consequently, Thump's opening example rings true.

Some religions speak to the spirit of others and how it can affect those around them. Am not talking about some supernatural mess, I am simply saying other's character flaws and moral values can intude into ones life without them being aware, it happens everyday to all of us. If that is true and further and deeper investigation will prove it so, than again, good can cause harm if not used correctly, or be aware of it's dangers. The delimma is, or could be viewed much like sex. Sex is a necessary part of life but of course incest and adultery is not yet both involve sex.

Okay, am jumping this over to books. The messages and thought patterns of the words within them can cause one to be....ahhh, stupid, okay??!! Just as knowledge is gained from reading, so can mess. Therefore looking back at the statement Thumper referenced, I can agree with the writer; "nothing gained is nothing gained".

Good question, Thump. I could go on with this but I will hold tight and see what others have or if they even wish to continue.

Of course some will miss the point and debate the merits of "good" books verses "bad", yet again, I personally do not believe that's the message.
