BLACK MASCULINITY ESSAY COMPETITION

What does it mean to be a man? How are black men represented and perceived?
What obstacles do they encounter? Are black men ever celebrated for any
positive contributions to mainstream American culture? Focusing on how black
masculinity defines the African American experience, within and outside the
mainstream, use the blog format to explore the dynamics of family, justice, community,
and culture.

Answer these questions, or any others you think relevant to the theme of
black masculinity in America, in 400 words or less, including videos and pictures
if desired. Only two submissions are allowed per writer. Winning selections
will receive 0 per article and feedback from Greg Tate.
Please submit your blog entries to tate@nbpc.tv
Deadline: June 30th

Greg Tate, celebrated journalist for the Village Voice, delves into matters
of race to produce content with dynamic style. His books include Fly Boy in the
Buttermilk; Everything But the Burden: What White People Are Taking From
Black Culture; and Midnight Lightning: Jimi Hendrix and the Black Experience.
Beyond writing, Tate's talents include music, as see in his band, Burnt Sugar.
