Hummmm. The "Disciples" is the name of a real Street gang "franchise" in Chicago. Hope they won't get testy about you using their name. Or did you obtain permission?

I don't need permission since the Disciples I'm referencing are like the biblical disciples.

You got a lot of balls writing Westerns at a time when the genre has all but dried up--Black Westerns at that.

I tried my hand at it about 15-20 years ago--Zane Grey was my model.

Couldn't work up any enthusiasm for it and left it alone. At the time you couldn't have no sex and no cussing (maybe changed since Deadwood), you still had racism vs Native Americans and you couldn't tell the truth about what a murderous genocidal land grab the whole thing was.

Do you do a lot of research or just let it rip?

What do you think of the theory that the trophes of the Western have been transplanted to Modern Day (The Die Hard series) and the Future (Robo Cop)

I would have to agree with your first statement that there isn't as much interest in westerns as I would like. I've done a lot of research for my books. Ebony Marshal is based off research of Deputy Bass Reeves and the black deputy marshals who use to ride Indian Territory. On this third book there has been some research (even went so far as the real Disciples), but I'd have to say I just let it rip in this one.

If you want to find the first action movies the western is probably it. It would be easy to transfer the ideals of a western into our time. I would call it the ultimate machoism.
