Tim Wise, makes some very strong agruements; "...Ending affirmative action would only further cement the systemic advantages for whites that have been in place for hundreds of years

The question to me is did affirmative action benefit the people it was established to help, or was it program that was a tragic paradox? It was supposed to give people a leg up, but what it did was trip up a lot of people by putting them in over their heads, while making it easier for those who were already prepared to make it on their own. We hear about the successes but not about the great number of failures where people couldn't cut the mustard because where they needed the advantage of affirmative action was at the grade school level. Then they wouldn't have been so ill-prepared to survive at a higher level.
The rate of failure for small businesses has always been high because of so many risks factors involved and affirmative action didn't do a lot to alter this.
And when the issue of America being geared toward "the privileged" arises, this brings into question the idea of "class", and more and more class is starting to transcend color. If affirmative action isn't eliminated it should at best be given an extensive overhaul. IMO.

(There are always going to be casualties. I can recall numbers of white people who left college and grad school and went right to the mental hospital.

I am conflicted on this. On the one hand I know of several successes--Clarence Thomas for one--three guys I graduated from high school with who barely got out and are now professionals--on the other I can see how in some ways it was a fraud and has been used by white women and other minorities who it was not meant for.

I know the stigma arguement but screw that--white folks didn't respected WEB DuBois and Thurgood Marshall and they weren't affirmative action products

Why not? What can it hurt? Look at George W. Bush?

Did most White foks acknowledge and accomodate the talents, efforts and accomplishments of African Americans PRIOR to the advent of Affirmative Action?

Hell? Did most of them even KNOW about them?

Hell? Did most of them even KNOW about them?

(How could they NOT know? How many Black Harvard grads and Black lawyers were there prior to the 1960's.

They dismissed them. Ask Cynique)

they got rid of it here in michigan, i was pissed off about it, not for my sake but for other people who may need it. it all starts with education and anyone who says that all schools are equal is a fuggin liar. beyond that, you have the old boy's networks who won't have a damn thing to do with a black business simply for that reason, (they may not say it, but the actions can easily verify it) nepitisum is a enemy of black, and it is just a natural response to associate yourself with people you feel comfortable with. affirmative action has it's pitfalls and some tweaking needs to be done to it so that it helps out those who really need the help and aren't over the heads for certain positions in school or work.
