Obama's 'Punjab jab' on Time's list of top 10 gaffes

Tuesday, 11 December , 2007, 10:09

Washington: US democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's "Punjab jab" against his rival contender Hillary Clinton has made it to Time magazine's list of Top 10 Campaign Gaffes.

Listed No. 9 on Time's list of presidential campaign trail faux pas is "The campaign of Democratic Senator Barack Obama referring to Clinton as 'Hillary Clinton, D-Punjab,' in a jab at her work on behalf of Indian-Americans."

Last June, Obama's campaign sparked controversy by circulating a memo accusing the former first lady of pandering to the Indian American community by referring to her as "Clinton (D-Punjab)" - journalistic shorthand for Democratic senator from Punjab.

It also accused the Democratic front-runner of getting "tens of thousands" from companies that outsource jobs to India.

Rising star Obama quickly made amends by apologising for the "Punjab jab" as the Indian-American community took umbrage, denouncing his memo as "the worst kind of anti-Indian American stereotyping".

Other gaffes on Time's top 10 list are:

1. Republican Rudy Giuliani (former New York mayor) saying he was at "ground zero" as often as the rescue and recovery workers.

2. Democratic Senator Joseph Biden (chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) calling Obama "the first mainstream African-American (presidential candidate) who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy".

3. Republican and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney's claims about his hunting experience.

4. Republican Senator John McCain singing "bomb, bomb, bomb ... bomb, bomb Iran."

5. Democrat nominee for vice president in 2004 John Edwards' $400 haircuts.

6. Romney saying "we ought to double Guantanamo."

7. Giuliani taking cell phone calls from his wife while addressing audiences.

8. Clinton saying she wants to "take those (oil company) profits and put them into a strategic energy fund".

10. Republican Fred Thompson (former senator and TV show actor) saying he couldn't remember the details of the legal battle over whether to keep Terry Schiavo alive.

Schiavo, who lived in a persistent vegetative state for 15 years after suffering brain damage in Feb 1990, died in March 2005 when her feeding tube was removed after a prolonged legal battle. Some have since maintained that her death constituted "judicial murder".

"It was a dumb mistake on our campaign's part and I made it clear to my staff in no uncertain terms that it was a mistake."
— Barack Obama

...Sen. Hillary Clinton had jokingly referred to herself as a prospective Senator from Punjab at an earlier Indian-American fund-raising event, one reporter called the memo "a rather sleazy brand of very old-style negative campaigning" that seemed to be "trafficking in xenophobic caricatures of an Indian takeover of U.S. politics."

Senator Obama Has Launched Several Very SEXIST Anti-Clinton Web Sites

- - -

Obama Camp Registers [SEXIST] Anti-Clinton Web Sites

By JAKE TAPPER
Dec. 20, 2007 —

Though Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has pledged to keep criticisms of his rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, focused on the issues, ABC News has learned that his campaign secretly registered an internet domain name called desperatehillaryattacks.com, a Web site that may seem to insult the former First Lady personally.

The domain name -- and another one, Desperationwatch.com -- connects to a known Web site where the Obama campaign catalogues Clinton's attacks on the Illinoisan, hillaryattacks.barackobama.com But DesperateHillaryAttacks.com has not been known until now.

"Apparently nothing says 'hope' like an attack Web site," quipped Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson.

But Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton denies that his campaign is calling Clinton "desperate." Rather, he insists, they are calling her attacks "desperate."

"Hillary Clinton has been launching desperate attacks on Obama for many months now and our Web site has carefully detailed and refuted each one," Burton told ABC News.

During the primary season, candidates often keep criticisms of rivals within their own party targeted on their actions rather than their character.

Obama, for instance, sent a fundraising e-mail to supporters earlier this month in which he said he would "respond to each of the Clinton campaign's desperate attacks directly and honestly."

It's an odd semantic kabuki, and whether the Obama campaign crossed the line gets subjective.

It boils down to this:

In the URL, is the adjective "desperate" modifying the noun "Hillary" followed by the verb "attacks," as the Clinton campaign sees it? (And as may be implied by the Web site name the Obama campaign publicized, HillaryAttacks.BarackObama.com.

Or is "desperate" is modifying "Hillary attacks" as one noun (as with "shoe store"), as the Obama campaign maintains?

Earlier today, ABC News reported that Clinton has registered the domain names of two Web sites with the express goal of attacking Obama -- the first time this election cycle a presidential campaign has launched a Web site with the express purpose of launching serious criticisms on a rival.

Votingpresent.com and Votingpresent.org will be used in a Clinton effort to paint Obama as cowardly since he occasionally voted "present" as an Illinois state legislator when it came to controversial legislation.

"...the worst kind of anti-Indian American stereotyping".

Oh Phuleeese!

I did think Giuliani taking cell phone calls from his wife while addressing an audiences was just stupid and rude -- who does that?

The entire list is rather mundane.
