Thanks for posting this BB123. This is beyond tragic. Dr. Donda West was highly respected in the education community and an inspiration for her talented son. Apparently, Dr. West died as a result of complications from cosmetic surgery. Too sad.  | ||

Yes, Dr. West was young. She just wrote a book too. There aren't many pop stars who have such educated parents. I was explaining to my daughter that contrary to their tough guy images, many of the hip hop stars are Mama's boyz. Like Tupac and Biggie. Kanye will probably never be the same. | ||

From the news reports it sounds like Dr. West may have had a gastric bypass operation. I have railed against this surgery for years. It is too risky a way to lose weight. Unfortunately, folks looking for a quick fix will go this route no matter what the downsides. | ||

Time was black people wouldn't dream of going under the knife for vanity's sake. Folks think surgery is like getting your nails done, easy, simple routine. I have mixed feelings about plastic surgery. Nuthin wrong with wanting to look your best...the problem is, who determines what is "your best"? | ||

All the tabloid shows are saying that the first surgeon Kanye's mom consulted turned her down, saying she should consult an internist about her thyroid problem. So she later decided to go to this well-known black plastic surgeon and underwent an operation that lasted over 5 hours which is unusually long for this type of surgery. Complication arose after she was sent home. According to these reports, this doctor has several malpractive pending against him. They showed his picture and I've seen him before but I didn't catch his name. Sounds to me like Dr. West got caught up in all of the show biz glamour and wanted a make-over. She used to have dread locks and was very matronly looking, and then she started appearing with long lustrous hair extensions, with her face all made up. | ||

I agree. Five hours seems very long for a tummy tuck. I believe it was a gastric bypass operation. BTW, you don't need to be "morbidly obese" to have a gastric bypass. All you need is a surgeon willing to do it. The fact that she was supposed to see a "clearance" doctor makes me think it was a bypass. | ||

Dr Jan Adams reportedly was not originally a cosmetic surgeon but was another type of surgeon who decided to go into this field because it is so lucrative. A lot of surgeons whose speciality was something else are now doing this. | ||

Cosmetic surgery, especially when one has a pre-exisiting condition that requires a complete physical exam before the actual procedure(s), is nothing to take lightly. Because of her thyroid condition, the information patients are provided regarding the potential risks/complications that can occur even if there aren't any pre-exisiting conditions, and her voluntary "patient signature" on the documentation required prior to surgery, will -- most likely -- release Dr. Adams from being liable for her death. | ||

Turns out Dr. Adams is a drunk and in deep do do with the State board. From celebtv.com The paper trail of trouble is a long one for the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jan Adams M.D., who operated on Kanye West’s mom before her death. CelebTV.com is first to obtain a damning document from the Executive Director of the California Medical Board asking the state to consider revoking or suspending Adams’ physician and surgeon’s certificate in April of this year. The bombshell court document claims Adams has multiple DUI arrests and cites the board’s Business and Professions Code for a call to action that reads in part: “The use or prescribing for or administering to himself or herself, of any controlled substance; or the use of any of the dangerous drugs specified in Section 4022, or of alcoholic beverages, to the extent, or in such a manner as to be dangerous or injurious to the licensee, or to any other person or to the public, or to the extent that such use impairs the ability of the licensee to practice medicine safely..." The court papers detail a pair of alleged DUI arrests in Los Angeles, including March 31, 2006, with Dr. Adams arrested for blowing a .10 blood alcohol level during two breath analyzer tests and putting him over the legal limit. The case went to trial, and according to the document, Adams was found not guilty for driving under the influence and guilty of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or greater. He was sentenced to 96 hours in L.A. County jail, had to enroll in an alcohol treatment and counseling program and attend 60 AA meetings and five years probation, the papers state. Another DUI in his court history is detailed in a case from January 16, 2003. Adams entered a plea of “no contest” to driving under the influence and was placed on three years probation, which included a three-month first offender alcohol and drug education and counseling program and restricted him from driving anywhere but to and from work for 90 days, according to the documents. The court filing recommending the revocation of his doctor’s certificate also describes a car accident in September of 2002 when Adams allegedly lost control of his vehicle and struck a parked car. According to the documents, Adams told police he lost control of his car when another vehicle failed to stop for a traffic signal. Adams did not provide a description of the vehicle to the police, according to the Executive Director of the California Medical Board. In August of 2001 he was ordered to pay $250,000 in one claim. In September of 2001, he was ordered to pay $217,337 in another malpractice judgment. California places a cap on non-economic damages for medical malpractice cases at $250,000.  | ||

But I heard the reason why the surgery was so long was because both were performed, one after another, which may have seen better rather than go under the knife on two different occasions, which can also be as risky. | ||
