Last nite, I watched via C-SPAN2 most of what appeared to be a house party held in honor of Supreme Court Justice (and Black America’s Favorite Kneegrow Boogieman) Clarence Thomas that was hosted by Armstrong Williams. I believe the party occurred last Wednesday.

These might be some interesting observations:

@ Many of Washington’s bigwig Republican pols and media attended the party, included even Vice President Dick (“The Dark Lord Sauron!!!”) Cheney. I couldn’t help laughing as I pondered whether a bolt of lightning might blast the joint.

@ Almost all of the other 8 Supreme Court Justices were there though you would definitely read on the faces of the liberal Justices David Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg “What the fuhk am I doing here?”.

@ And Thomas’ buddy and intellectual sensei Justice Anton Scalia was in/out of there quicker than a mofo. And the brief time he was there he also had a WTF expression on his face.

@ There appear to be LOTS of Black men at the party (at one point, there almost appear to be as many brothas there as there are White men) but very few Black women.

@ And Clarence appears to have that genuine Black brothaman comraderie with the other brothas there. Honestly, seeing him mingle with other Black men almost make you think Clarence would be interesting to hang out with. Almost...

@ Thomas is a big sports fan. So much so, he somewhat embarrassingly exposed ESPN’s Steven A. ("...and Quite Frankly...") Smith for his lack of knowledge of Black sports trivia.

@ Each of the (at least 3) times Thomas started talking his trite Deeze Kneegrows Need Tah Pull Demselves Up By Dere BOOTSCRAPS spiel, much or most of what he had to say was edited OUT what was aired.

@ I'm sure it was just the way it was being filmed. But I'll be dayam if Thomas' (White) wife doesn't appears to be about foot taller than he is.

@ Oh...And my wife thinks the most recently appointed Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is GAY, even though his WIFE seems quite lovely and charming.

This just goes to show how life is condensed into snapshots by the media; how only the extraordinary is deemed newsworthy. Nobody is interested in day-to-day normalcy. Clarence Thomas' public image as a black pariah is something that generates the anger and disgust that is the stuff of "news", and news is what the media thrives on. But I'm not totally surpised to learn through an isolated episode of live coverage on public TV that in his private life Thomas enjoys popularity and respect among black Republican conservatives, a situation that is not provocative enough to classify as compelling "news". Thomas' crony Armstrong Williams is a good friend of Steadman Graham; nothing exceptional about that. But if Steadman's girlfriend Oprah became connected to Clarence Thomas, then that would be "news", especially because of the toll this could take on her popularity. And so it goes.

(What is extraordinary about a book party?)

But I'm not totally surpised to learn through an isolated episode of live coverage on public TV that in his private life Thomas enjoys popularity and respect among black Republican conservatives, a situation that is not provocative enough to classify as compelling "news".

(You learned nothing of the sort. You just saw who would stand publicly next to Uncle Clarence. Hell, I've gone to parties where I hated the people there because they were going to have good refreshments or somebody else I wanted to see would be there or I wanted to be seen.

I'm sure that when people used to invite you to parties you used to do the same thing.

I think I saw Julian Bond there, too, wasn't he?)

Nobody is interested in day-to-day normalcy.

(The man is a Supreme Court justice--sposed to be, anyway. He is not supposed to be showing day to day normalcy, in fact many hold that his publication of such a tome while on the bench is a social gaffe and a pr booboo)

Don't tell me what I saw, or try to impose your experiences on me, chrishayden. Speak for yourself and the warped view of the world that shapes your mentality. And I didn't say the book party was "extraordinary"; that's you twisting things around, trying unsuccessfully to make a point. Sheeze.

You shouldn't have slapped that woman. You knew she was a Christian and wouldn't fight back.

It was the wine talking.
