Posted on Friday, September 14, 2007 - 04:23 pm:        Pets Being Slaughtered In Meat-Starved Zimbabwe by Associated Press 14 September 2007 HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) -- Pets are being slaughtered for meat in shortage-stricken Zimbabwe and record numbers of animals have been surrendered to shelters or abandoned by owners no longer able to feed them, animal welfare activists say. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it could not feed surrendered animals or find them new homes and was being forced to kill them and destroy the corpses. Animals, like people, are being hard hit by Zimbabwe's economic meltdown, with official inflation of more than 7,600 percent, the highest in the world. Independent estimates put real inflation closer to 25,000 percent and the International Monetary Fund has forecast it will reach 100,000 percent by the end of the year. Posted on Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 10:05 am:        I think we finally found out when a pet stops being a pet and to be honest, I love animals (and hope to get a pet pig myself) but I cannot really blame the starving in Zim. Zimbabwe is really suffering at the hands of Mugabe, he is killing his people in waves and in one of the crullest ways, which is starvation. Let's not look at this in a western point of view - if you were faced with your hungry children and Peggy the goat you previously viewed as a pet - what would you do? These pets being killed for food is totally Mugabe's fault.
