Kam is my man, but I part ways with Kam pretty much from the get-go on this one.
Perhaps if he entitled the piece, “..What Hath Bob Johnson Wrought?” I might be more included to agree. Placing the blame on the current state of affairs on Don Imus is ridiculous. Imus is mere a indicator not the cause.
The “Read a Book” which Kam maligns shows just how we have far we have come. I think Bomani "D'Mite" Armah, and others did a brilliant job creating with this parody. I was very amused by the video as I am by DL Hughley, and usually Bernie Mac. This is the exact same thing Aaron McGruder does in Boondocks – really just a humorous reflection of a segment of society…
Now I do strongly agree with that if one is to slam Imus, the same energy, if not more, should be used to slam DL Hughley. Is it any less offensive because DL says it?
Again, I think this stuff is getting to much attention, while the REAL (lack of education, etc) problems are being ignored. Maybe those chickens are just beginning to make they way home to roost.

DL said what he said to gain publicity for himself because he thinks he's funny. So no, I don't put the same blame on DL as I do Imus.
As to the Read A Book video, it's really not even about reading a book. It's about how Black people need to get their shit together in general.
It's a damn shame when you have to tell a grown ass person to brush their teeth and use deo. I'm having a deja vu moment because I've written this before in a former life when I was Cleopatra

All this brings to mind that famous images of comedy and tragedy in the form of 2 masks. The irony is that that nobody makes fun of themselves any better than black folks and the result is embarassingly hilarious. It's also embarassingly sad that we are not doing better than anyone at uplifting ourselves. And so it goes. |
