Book says Souter almost left court

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer

Fri Sep 7, 1:59 PM ET

Justice David Souter contemplated resigning from the Supreme Court because he was so upset by the decision that sealed the 2000 presidential election for George W. Bush, a new book says.

Souter, one of the four dissenting justices in the case, believed his five colleagues in the majority acted in a "crudely partisan" manner in siding with Bush to shut down the recount of votes in Florida in December 2000, author Jeffrey Toobin writes in "The Nine, Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court." A day after the decision in Bush v. Gore, Vice President Al Gore formally conceded the election.

"Souter seriously considered resigning. For many months, it was not at all clear whether he would remain as a justice," Toobin writes. "At the urging of a handful of close friends, he decided to stay on, but his attitude toward the court was never the same. There were times when David Souter thought of Bush v. Gore and wept."

The reclusive Souter, 67, typically returns to his home in New Hampshire as soon as the court finishes work in late June and heads back to Washington only in time for the start of the next term. He was named to the court by the first President Bush in 1990.

Toobin does not say how he learned that Souter thought about retiring, although he says generally that his sources include the justices themselves.

But one of Souter's close friends, former New Hampshire Sen. Warren Rudman, called Toobin's account "absolutely false."

"It's laughable. Obviously he dissented strongly. He felt the court was very wrong and he didn't think it was good for the court, never mind the issue itself," Rudman said in an interview. "But he never, ever considered resigning over that or anything else."

Souter declined to comment on the report, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

The book will be available to the public beginning Sept. 18.

If it was a political scam all you Dummycrats fell for it. Whose fault is that? See, if this shit happened the other way around the Republicans would have organized and mobilized and done something about it. But all you lazy, shiftless Dummycrats just lie there and take it.

You too NT. Whatever you are.

It's not about the Dems being dumb, it's about them not being unscrupulous, dishonest, and crooked enough to taint the voting process of their country like the duplicitous Republicans had no qualms about doing.

What Ever. If it was a scam then all of y'all rolled over and accepted it. So quit your endless bitching and whining about something that no one had the balls to dispute. The Dummycrats had the opportunity to put Kerry in the White House in 2004 but failed at that as well. Lazy, shiftless, comatose, disorganized crybabies - that's what the Dummycrats are. Get off your butts and go vote next time.

The popular vote reflects the great number of Democrats who did go out and vote. But the Dems couldn't overcome the the Right-wing-Republican bible belt fanatics who are so dumb they think dinosaurs were around 6000 years ago and the wild-eyed patriots who are so dumb they can't tell Saddam from Osama.

Most Dummycrats don't understand the election process. Again, that's the difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. Democrats fail to educate their voters and so the masses continue to have a misperception about the "popular vote." Republicans, on the other hand, organize early, vote en masse and get their electors in place. They don't sit around and do nothing like the lazy dems. Watch it happen again in 2008. Dummycrats.

Republican recruiters may look smart because the voters they target are so dumb and panic-stricken that they follow their conniving leaders like sheep and the dumbest one of all is George W. Bush, the puppet of a fascistic cabal of self-serving imperilists. If the Republicans "win" again it's not because they are smart. It's because people who vote for them are dumb and there are more dumb guillible people in America than smart ones. And you'd have to be dumb not to realize that.

Not only brilliantly stated but "factual" Ms. Cynique. No doubt. Anyone with an IQ that is larger than their shoe size knows this. Except for.......well....sigh....you know. But remember: "Who is the fool? The fool or someone who argues with a fool". E'nuff said..........

What Ever Cyn. Whether the Republicans or the Democrats are "dumberer" is irrelevant. And whether the Democrats were out-tricked, out-smarted or out-dummied, the Republicans are in the White House (BUSH IS A TWO-TERM PRESIDENT) and more than likely the Republicans will be there again.

I have participated in both party's early election processes, worked the polls, been precinct chair, attended conventions, and from my own experience and with my own eyes have witnessed that the Republicans are the better organized of the two political parties.

That's just the way it is. That's a fact.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

NiTBrains - A fool is someone who snivels about what happened (being scammed) during the elections of 2000 instead of focusing on the upcoming elections of 2008 (and attempting to keep from being scammed again).

So take heart, remove your head from your white girls' ass, wipe the snivel snot from your nose and do something about it.

Fair enough, Mzuri. So since who is dumber between the Dems and the Republicans is irrelevant, then the term "Dummycrats" amounts to nothing more than an inane sobriquet. BTW, the Democrats in my state of Illinois are quite well-organized. Both of our senators are Democrats and Chicago is run by the Democratic machine.

Speaking of dummies ...

Oops ... Bush does it again as blunders flow

US President George Bush had a bad day at the Sydney Opera House yesterday.

He had only reached the third sentence of his speech to business leaders, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, when he committed his first gaffe.

“Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit,” Mr Bush said to Prime Minister John Howard.

Oops.

That would be APEC, the annual meeting of 21 leaders from Pacific Rim nations, not OPEC, the cartel of 12 major oil producers.

The US President quickly corrected himself.

“APEC summit”, he said, joking that Mr Howard had invited him to the OPEC summit next year (for the record, an impossibility, since neither Australia nor the US are OPEC members).

Talking about Mr Howard’s visit to Iraq last year to thank his country’s troops serving there, Mr Bush called them “Austrian troops”.

That one was fixed for him.

Though tapes of the speech clearly show Mr Bush saying “Austrian”, the official text released by the White House switched it to “Australian”.

Then, speech done, Mr Bush confidently headed out, the wrong way.

He strode away from the lectern on a path that would have sent him over a steep drop.

Mr Howard and others redirected the President to centre stage, where there were steps leading down to the floor of the theatre.

The event started inauspiciously.

Mr Bush started 10 minutes late, so APEC workers could hustle people out of the theatre’s balcony seating to fill the many empty portions of the main orchestra section below, which is most visible on camera.

Even resettled, the audience remained quiet throughout the President’s remarks, applauding only when he was finished.

LOL @ Cyn. The word Dummycrats really has nothing to do with being dumb. It's just a word (that I like to use to stir it up).

And to JMHO - We all already know that President Bush stutters and that he has issues with enunciating. Are you a fucking Ph.D. or something?

Do tell.

Please keep your responses short, cuz I'm real busy.

"NiTBrains - A fool is someone who snivels about what happened (being scammed) during the elections of 2000 instead of focusing on the upcoming elections of 2008 (and attempting to keep from being scammed again)."

Exactly! I agree. That's why people who are tired of the most scandalous and inept administration in American history are mobilizing and doing some thing about it. If you forgot, let me remind you Ms. Academia -they just did! That's why the white conservative Republicans you grovel to and worship are "the minority" in both the Senate and House: THE AMERICAN PUBLIC VOTED THEIR ASSES OUT!! Ya got that..!!??

"So take heart, remove your head from your white girls' ass, wipe the snivel snot from your nose and do something about it.

Ha! Ha! Ha! That's funny coming from you. YOU ARE THE LAST PERSON ON THIS BOARD TO ACCUSE ANYONE OF HAVING THEIR HEADS STUCK UP A WHITE PERSONS ASS!! As much as you proudly brag about being a cup holding nappy headed flunky monkey for your organ grinder white Republican masters, you have no right to accuse anyone of anything! Unlike you, at least I have enough pride and appreciation for the struggles and history of my race not to side with a hypocritical party saturated with white racists who have nothing but contempt for my people.

The party of Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly and David Horowitz openly welcome designer Negroes like you -to clean their houses, wash their cars, hand out GOP pamphlets, serve their meals and take out the trash. With that said, now take your sorry uneducated GOP boot licking flunky monkey ass into the kitchen. Harriet Myers needs your special receipt so the two of you can make some biscuits for Bush. Go on now.......

"We all already know that President Bush stutters and that he has issues with enunciating."

This is true. We do all know this. We also know it is directly related to him being the mentally dumbest and the most embarrassingly inarticulate president in American history. But that didn't stop his Texas flunky monkey homie from voting for him.

"Are you a fucking Ph.D. or something?"

Do you have a fucking high school diploma...?????

(JMHO is smart enough to recognize the long term results of substance abuse which apparently good numbers of Americans ca't--or many voters are substance abusers or burnouts.

Yes NitBrains - I have a high school diploma. It's a G.E.D. equivalent to a HS diploma. I got that when I turned 16. I also have some additional education besides that.

I've already offered to send my resume to any person of your choosing and you declined. So why don't you shut the fukc up about it.

"I have a high school diploma. It's a G.E.D. equivalent to a HS diploma. I got that when I turned 16."

I don't believe you. Not after what you have written and confessed to on this board. Nice try but much too late.

"I also have some additional education besides that."

Oh really? Like what? Looking at the newspaper funnies doesnt count as additional education Mzuri.

"I've already offered to send my resume to any person of your choosing and you declined."

Your resume? What resume? No secondary education and can't spell college or university and you're telling me you can put a resume together? I doubt that. And what is you job experience and what are you capable of doing? Mzuri, no one is going to pay you to write about how you have no desire nor interest in knowing the history and sacrifices of your own people. And had no idea black people could even vote in America prior to the 1960's??? Cheezzzzzz....... Well, I guess that's something you didn't need to know....shrugs.....

But to be honest, I'm sure David Horowitz would love to post some of your writings about your passion and love for white conservative Republicans on his web site (http://www.frontpagemag.com/). And Tom Meztger could also use your "I just loves me some white conservatives" drivel for his site (http://www.resist.com/). Both are looking for house broken kitchen Negroes to spread the word for white conservatism. Ya might want to send them your...cough...resume.
