Young, white Americans are happier Poll finds minorities ages 13-24 still challenged by racism in their lives According to an extensive survey of 1,280 people ages 13-24 by The Associated Press and MTV, 72 percent of whites say they are happy with life in general, compared with 51 percent of Hispanics and 56 percent of blacks. “It doesn’t surprise me,” said Martin Carpenter, 21, a black New Jersey resident. “There’s a lot of issues out there for African-American young adults. You can still go to certain places and feel uncomfortable, like you don’t belong there. Martin’s feeling about racism, real or perceived, was echoed in the survey: 28 percent of minorities believe race will hurt them in the quest for a better life. Among whites, 20 percent feel their race will help in getting ahead. What makes young people happy may surprise you Destiny Brown, 17, a black Virginia high school student, said she has friends who were already passed over for work simply because their names sounded different: “I know sometimes your name — people will give you a hard time when you try to get a job.” The difference in levels of happiness is not always stark, but it’s consistent. Among whites, 67 percent usually wake up happy in the morning; for minorities, the figure is 61 percent. Those numbers extend into all aspects of life: Parents: Sixty-six percent of minorities are happy with their relationships with mom and dad, compared with 79 percent of whites. Sex: Sixty percent of white youths are happy with their sex lives, compared with 46 percent of minorities. Both groups are about equal on the sexual activity scale. Friends: Eighty-one percent of minorities are happy with their relationships with friends, compared with 88 percent of whites. Jobs: Fifty-one percent of minorities are happy with their jobs, compared with 64 percent of whites. Money: Forty-four percent of minorities are unhappy with the money they have, compared with 35 percent of whites. Grades: Sixty-three percent of minorities are happy with their school grades, while 73 percent of whites are satisfied with their marks. Barely half of the minority respondents say school makes them happy, contrasted with 60 percent of the whites. The study also found a split in how the races perceive the keys to happiness. Among minorities, the most important factor was lack of financial worries, chosen by one in four respondents. For whites, one in five people chose a good family. Carpenter, one of the survey participants, spoke for the majority of minority youths who feel their race will not cause problems later in life. “I don’t think so,” he said. “I’m thinking on a smaller scale. In my community, it’s not that big a deal.” | ||

An older white guy once explained to be why a white girl we both worked with was near tears over some BS on the job (that I’ve long since forgotten) which I viewed as a minor inconvenience. He explained “Troy, you have to understand Stephanie [I don’t recall her real name], probably never had anything bad happen to her, she went to the best schools, and has plenty of money and family support, this is probably the worst thing that has ever happened to her”. This happened at least two decades ago. During that time I seen the situation many times again. I’ve seen these kids being raised too. They have never been spanked, their every whim is indulged and they are treated like little adults. They say anything to their parents without fear of reprisal. They are given trophies for participation (not excellence) in sports. They have never seen a red pen mark on an exam. Their parents buy them new cars as soon as they can drive and provide plenty of diversions. They have never worked a minimum wage, if they work at all. It is no wonder why they are ill prepared for the harsh realities of adulthood but happier in their youth. I’ve also observed how Black people react to diversity. It is simply different that white people. white people were all surprised and distraught over 911, for example. Black people were neither surprised or as distraught. This is my observation not the result of a study. white people get all bent out of shape, and scream for blood, over animals. Vick’s cruelty to the dogs is a perfect example. Black folks say yeah, that might be twisted; but he does not deserve jail time. I guess it is all about perspective. The Black and white perspectives are very different. Those differences are particularly stark in places like Manhattan. | ||

Why shouldn't White children be happier? After all they live in a society that affirms there beauty, worth, and humanity. They live in a society that was set up and designed STRICTLY to accomodate them. When you look at the history of America you will see that it is a country that was set up as a "utopia or paradise" just for the White man and his children. To the total opposite of that spectrum you have non-Whites(in particularly Blacks). We live in a society that constantly denies our beauty, worth and humanity. All a White person has to do is be "WHITE". Like I said before his/her skin is a literal comodity. There is a monetary value in our country for "White" skin. It doesn't matter how smart, pretty, or educated you are. If you have "White" skin will will always be accomodated. NO MATTER WHAT!!! | ||

I totally agree with you, Troy. You know sociologist Dr Frances Wellsley(?) said that when black people drove the white mutants out of the tribe, these outcasts wandered off on their own, and they've been querlous every since. It's like the world is their audition for American idol and they have no idea they can't sing. | ||

I was listening to the NPR this afternoon and this woman was talking about how "rough" her childhood was. She said her parents both died in their 60's. She was using this fact as evidence to support her argument of how hard her parents worked so that she might have a better life. The average Black man kicks off in his 60's. Many white folks take their privilege for granted. | ||
