We were waiting for you, Chris.

Anyway, I don't really give a care about Michael Vick and the dog fighting business, it's been going on for years. I'm more concerned about people with families who own dangerous dogs that turn around and maim/kill their children. People need to get their priorities straight. These types of animals should not be used as pets.

OK, here ya go: Fukc Michael Vick! If he is guilty, I hope they throw his ass under the jail. There is no excuse for what he has allowed in his home and participated in -if he is guilty.

Why do men like to see dogs spill thier blood and guts all over the floor? Why is this considered a "sport"? It is a truly sickening, pathetic practice one that is far to widespread... I feel so sorry for those dogs!

I don't advocate dogfighting. But have any of you bleeding hearted doglovers who eat meat spent anytime kvetching over what happens at your average pig, chicken or steer slaughter house?

Whatever! I doubt if pig and cowslaughter houses put the future dinners in a pen together and urge them to rip each others throats out and then spray the loser down with water and electrocute them or shoot them.

Dog fighting is inhumane and so are those that advocate it or look the other way.

By the way, you vegetarians are killing life as well. Vegetables eat, drink water, grow and reproduce, and even bleed! So let's not wax all holier than thou! Okay? okay.

A-woman, I do not like the idea of dog fighting. It is not exactly my cup of tea, but I can very easily see why other people would love it.

Is it so different than professional boxing; where the next punch can literarly result in the combatant’s death? It is a combat sport and is inherently inhumane. Any sport where you are trying to hurt someone is.

Michael Vick is one of the best players in a professional combat sport. I’m not at all surprised that he would be into dog fighting. Personally I do not think he should have his livelyhood taken away for this reason. Specially when that livelyhood is based upon the same underlying principle – combat.

I know Vick is also accused of torturing dogs. This is tough to justify without knowing the whole truth (I admit I have not been following the story very closely). Why was he electrocuting the dogs? Was he doing this to put down the ones too injured to helped, was this just a sadistic activity or something else.

Besides I also find it amazing that people are so worked up about the plight of a bunch of dogs when there is so much other sh-t happening to HUMANS that deserves attention…

I have to agree with Troy. Boxing is my favorite spectator sport and it really is barbaric and there isn't much of a difference between boxing and dog fighting. But I'm not into dog fighting, just boxing :-)

Mzuri, if you saw a dog fight live, you might feel differently -- especially if you are into gambling.

For those who are serious about it. It is as much a "sport" as boxing. Though I believe, as with legal sports, gambling is a significant factor in the popularity.

Troy,

Have you forgotten how people freaked out when Mike Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfields ear??? People wanted to HURL CHUNKS and that little show of cannibalism went quite a long way in destroying peoples love of boxing. When's the last time you have seen people hyped about a heavyweight championship???Those days are over.

So you lover's of animal cruelty and barbaric behavior all for the sake of gambling why don't you petition your local governor or senator, or congressman and tell them that you would be simply thrilled and overjoyed if they would bring back the gladiators and lions combat sport, that way you could kill two birds with one stone. You could bet on how bad the lions would get cut up by the gladiators sword before the lion ultimately ripped the gladiator's throat out and ate him alive right before your blood lovin' lives! Hell make it double or nothing--see how long it takes before the lions turn on each other after eating the gladiators and rip each others throats out! Bet you'd make a mint and enjoy the sport of things all at the same time. Eh Troy?

SICKENING!!!

And exactually, Troy. I don't care about Michael Vick or his carreer. why don't you ask him why he didn't spend the money he made off of killing dogs to help all those poor unfortunates you're all concerned about? Hmmmmmmm? If he were the only one fighting dogs, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Thugs, whites, businessmen, and a whole lot of regular people fight dogs all the time! And I STILL think it's sick and cruel of anybody to hang or electrocute a dog after he's half dead from a dog fight. I dont' see how ANYONE could think this is just a sport!

"But have any of you bleeding hearted doglovers who eat meat spent anytime kvetching over what happens at your average pig, chicken or steer slaughter house?"

ABM, I don't eat pork or red meat. So they could stop killing cows and pigs tomorrow as far as I'm concerned. But I am guilty of eating chicken. I admit it. And your point is well taken. Seeing an animal slaughtered is quite gross and disturbing.

But that's not the point (since there is not enough collective public concern to do anything about it). I do not condone the inhumane and unnecessary brutal slaughter of animals. But although the method is often inhumane, it is done for food and not sport and entertainment! We do not eat dogs (in America). In our culture, they are domesticated animals used as pets and companions. Breeding and training dogs for the sole purpose of fighting and riping one another apart, is something I cannot personally conceive of doing, condoning, excusing or brushing off with a shrug of the shoulders punctuated with, "Well? So what?". I see nothing meaningful about beating, drowning, electrocuting, shooting and hanging dogs.

If Michael Vick is guilty of this, like I said, I hope they throw his ass under the jail. Will dog fighting stop if he is convicted? No. Does imprisoning a child molester stop sexual abuse of children? No. It's just one less criminal activity that takes place in our society.

I like Mike Vick but he was stupid for putting himself in this kind of situation. I hope he can get himself out of this with a fine and probation, but I think the Feds are at least going to get him for a year or two. I don't know why these brothers can't leave the hood alone once they've made it out. Help out from a distance but don't go back, it seems to bring these guys down every time.

There was a 60 Minutes piece on MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting yesterday. These guys get into the ring/cage and break each other's arms, etc. It's really violent and bloody. The U.S. has some really dumb laws if people can fight and break each other apart but dog fighting is illegal. We probably have the most double standard backwards laws of any industrialized nation in the world.

True. But it's part of his personal history. It's not uncommon to see many Negroe pro athletes caught up in the seedy thug Coon culture. Dog fighting is just one aspect of it.

Athletes thrive in a culture of aggressive competitiveness. Dog fights put them in their element. That's why more and more people are realizing that these gladiators are not role models to be put on pedestals with the expectation that they will be good examples. Bull fighting is also a cruel sport. Being humane is supposedly what separates men from animals. Yeah, right.

Excellent point. I would never want my children to emulate nor look to a pro athlete as a role model. Not these present day athletes. For inspiration as far their athleticism is concerned, fine. Off the field or court, I don't think so......

A_womon, are you kidding me?! People loved to hate what Mike did. Violence and brutality WAS the reason Tyson was popular in the first place. People wanted to see him KNOCK MF's OUT! Plain and simple.

Mzuri, I saw the piece on 60 minutes too. Made me think of this thread. Image, they used to let the fighter's stomp and kick each other in the groin -- Those dudes were scary!

A_woman if you saw the 60 minutes peace it might help you understand our culture's love of violence (as long as it is directed to someone else).

As long as we have mixed martial arts and the other "sporting" events where HUMANS are actually getting killed; I think you can forgive me for not getting too worked up about something that the majority of the planet considers a food source.

Yes, I do think it is hypocritical for us to throw these Brothers is jail, for years, behind this, when we condone all sorts of cruelty elsewhere.

Look what Mike is accused of doing is twisted, but we are blowing this thing out of proportion. Sounds like he can get more time than some murders if they throw the book at him -- the way so many of you would like to do.

Troy said:

Now I do agree that you have a point there, Troy.

Look what Mike is accused of doing is twisted, but we are blowing this thing out of proportion. Sounds like he can get more time than some murders if they throw the book at him -- the way so many of you would like to do.

Another excellent point. Sigh. I definitely do not think that Vick should be made an example of. And I have to ask myself, why they are trying to single him out when EVERYBODY knows that this is really a thug gangster sport and it goes on every weekend in the hood! You know cops gotta know this so why mike vick and his crew and no one else???????? It's almost as if they want the world to believe that he alone is responsible for all the dog fighting that goes on in this country.

The next thing is the jail time. I don't agree that mike should get a felony charge and jailtime behind this. A woman here drowned 130 cats and she got a fine and probation. That was extreme cruelty as well.

While I still think dog fighting is barbaric,I don't think the proposed punishment fits the crime in the least...Nor does it do anything toward curbing this "sport". This is nothing new. This has been going on since I was a little girl and my aunt had to run her boyfriend to the ER cuz one of the pits he was training for combat turned on him and ripped a chunk out of his arm.

No, I ain't kidding you Troy. You know the game was never looked at the same after that. Look there is boxing during Mike and boxing after. I remember how my family and friends would get all hyped and cook food all day and invite a house full of people over for a fight. It was a party. Ain't nothing like that happening on that scale now over no fight.\ Especially when our hometown hero buster douglas broke mike down like a plastic spoon. Mike never got over that and that ear biting thing was the nail in his coffin.

I may not be following this very closely. But isn't it a fact that the main part of his troubles involves the interstate nature of the gambling on these dogs? That is what would get the federal charges invoked, yes? And was he paying taxes on the income from this endeavor? You can fail to fault him for animal cruelty all you want, but that wouldn't change much from a prosecution standpoint if the above is the case. These newly rich guys need to learn that the go'ment don't play when you start raking in $$ without giving them their cut. Let that be a lesson to us all, in fact--rich or no! LOL

That's my understanding.

Even if they never crossed state lines, dog fighting is illegal in Virginia. And, if you don't see anything wrong with it, it's still illegal. I guess people need to contact their local officials about getting the laws amended or abolished.

When the story broke, I knew he was in trouble, no matter, at the time, he claimed, he didn't live in the house, didn't know anything about dog fighting on HIS property, and that is was all on this cousin, who lived in the house and was taking advantage of his generosity. I am now wondering, if Vick is going to rat on others involved to save his own behind.

Yvettep wrote:

I doubt it. I'd wager, pun intended, people involved in gambling on illegal activities don't report their winnings and/or losses on their tax return.

So true. Latest example: Ron Isley. Sickness and old age may not keep him from serving some jail time.

The IRS "will get cha if ya don't watch out". When all else failed, tax evasion was what brought down the notorious Al Capone, not to mention ultimate fighting champion, Joe Louis. He was dogged by the feds for years until he was finally able to settle his enormous tax debt.
And at the least the losers in dog fights are put out of their misery. Muhammad Ali is an example of a brain-damaged fighter left to live out his life in "quiet desperation".
Wonder if they give the dogs steroids?
