It's amazing how riled-up some foks got over it.
Was it the poem itself that cause all the trouble?
Was it because I authored it.

It seems much more of a mean and hostile aura has settled here.
Either that, or I'm getting old and am just much more aware of and bothered by such than I'd previously been. |

Also ABM,
I believe the poem would have caused a stir
even without the "Kola" tie-in.
That's what proves it's a poem and that it
has merit, the fact that it really moved
people.
There is quite a bit of subtext in those
sparse few lines.
And it IS scary, though you being a comic
guy--you meant it to be "bent", not ghoulish,
but those who lack tact will never vibe with
the painting.
It's really a GREAT poem!
But I've seen countless instances where you
can really write--quite better than most of
what other black men are publishing nowadays,
which is why it's frustrating that you don't
get serious about it.
You have a very uncommon intellect...a range
of emotional understanding that is "inate",
it can't be taught. FEW MEN have that, ABM,
and that's why it's so important for you to
write for black men.
It takes enormous complexity to really move
people around 'inside' with words, and
part of our mutual respect probably hangs on
the fact that we're both naturally expressive
like that.
I've seen whole threads where we've jotted
down stone cold literature in POST and REPLIES
all typed and posted in 10 minutes.
In our "flirty" days...we really used to
wax poetic---and I mean good stuff!

hostile and vicious here.
Imagine what awaits me in N.Y.
I spoke to Troy on the phone the other night
and I just had a very lurking feeling after
we hung up that I'm going to have to kick
some major ass in the big apple.
Since the night my parents were murdered and
I stayed with the bodies all night--I have been
an extraordinarily perceptive person, and as
well, I feel that I am everyone.
People insist that I'm crazy, but I feel as
though they're a lower level of sensitivity,
a lower plane of thought.

I appreciate your compliments of my poem.
Funny. I was actually attempting to be more obsessive and erotic than chilling and gothic.
Sex can be very much an act of violent, ravenous, if not 'vampiric', consumption, I think.
And I was trying to tap into that some.
You're much more a writer than I'll ever be. In fact, you're more than a mere writer. You're a creator.
There’s an urgent, almost even breathless, spritzing of magic amid most every thing you write.
If and when I've done well here I am certain it's been largely influenced by my readings of and banter with you (and lament how all the hostility here severely curbs and precludes my muse). So if you must express appreciation for my poetry and other postings, I won't try to stop you.
Oh, and THANK You VERY Much!!!
I pray you’re PLEASANTLY surprised by your NYC experience. Because you and New York City really are made for each other. |

Hell, just write about something insane

Write a sci-fi short story. Make me the
lead character and that will get your juices flowing.
Get a stack of paper and DRAW (as I do) all
kinds of faces and scenes and images. That
will bring your fire out.

ABM, you know what I think....
I think that you can FEEL there's something
inside you that you're supposed to write about,
but it's so big and so personal that you become
exhausted at just the mere thought of dredging
it up and giving it life....its own world.
I believe that you might be trying to force
yourself to write something (your lady cop book)
that isn't really in your soul.
There's something "very deep" about you and it's
cleverly disguised and hidden by your charm and
your devotion to "doing the right thing" even though another part of your is a Cad and a Sinner
(like me).
But you need to stop being afraid of the elephant
in your heart's livingroom and face it down.
Shit. Prepare your wife and daughters for the fact that you may have to very well become "possessed" by something inside yourself
that you're not totally comfortable with...just
to get it on paper.
I just don't think you're writing what you're
supposed to be writing.
But I KNOW you're a writer. You're an artist.
I KNOW THAT.

Ironically, I think I'm more afraid of SUCCEEDING. Of the responsibility.
But, at the risk of sounding arrogant, I've never failed at anything I've earnestly pursued.
I do worry about frightening my wife, daughters and others who know and care about me. I've for quite some time erected an image of myself to everyone I fear relenting.
Lastly, and I suppose this is the height of artistic cowardice...I have always had this gnawing fear that I'd be driven mad by writing. That I'd get so deep into it, so deep into what it would require of me and what I'd exact from it, that I'll cross a point from which for me there'll be no return.
I'm paradoxically frightened and thrilled by that as, say, a born alcoholic might be before he tastes his very first shot of vodka. |

That happened to me.
I get nose bleeds sometimes when I write.
Sometimes writing makes me so full of sorrow and hopelessness that I have to get naked and walk around in the woods at night with a shotgun, just crying and shaking!
I hate writing, ABM. It's very painful.
My autobiography almost caused me to committ suicide---but my sons----that's what keeps
me coming back around.
You will go crazy if you write.
You WILL
be intoxicated by it.
And it will affect your relationships
with your wife and family.
But you will also love them even more
and remain yourself...for them.
Art is not about the self, it's for the world,
because they need it from you in order
to progress.
We need it.

You're probably right. That I should stare down and wrestle with that literary demon witin. Perhaps I would survive its assaults.
It's interesting. My wife wants me to write. But she also knows there's some hot white havoc there just bristering to let loose. And I sense she's frighten and yet turned on by it.
You know how while making love we smack you women on the a$$ you yell for us to "sTOP!!!" while praying we do not.
Well. Now that I think about it, maybe you're NOT familiar with the yelling "STOP!!!" part. *wink* |
