Woman charged with using racial slur
By MICHAEL A. SCARCELLA

BRADENTON -- Mary Williams Cattanio, police say, just kept running her mouth even after she was told several times to watch her language.

Cattanio, who is white, would not stop using a racially-charged slur in a predominantly black neighborhood in east Bradenton, according to police.

Cattanio, 38, was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct for reportedly using the racial slur "n-----" in front of several police officers and a resident who was sitting on her front porch.

"She was in our neighborhood. I don't have any sympathy for her," said Jerolyn Simmons, 51, who heard the verbal tirade at about 8 a.m. from the porch of her house in the 500 block of 12th Avenue West. "She needs to learn some respect."

Simmons applauded the police for taking action.

But whether the charge holds up in court remains to be seen.

The disorderly conduct charge is a catch-all crime for police, much like obstruction of justice, that can be used to take someone to jail for any number of reasons.

Prosecutors review the paperwork to determine which cases involve broken laws.

Proving the disorderly conduct charge in court will require the state to show that Cattanio's language tended to corrupt public morals and affected the "peace and quiet" of the neighborhood.

Any obscene, non-racial outburst could fit this definition.

Simmons, who is black, said she wishes young black men and women did not toss around the slur with such informality. But she said blacks do not use the word to insult.

"They're just shooting the breeze," she said.

Cattanio, who lives in Naples, according to police reports, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. A telephone call left with her mother was not immediately returned. Cattanio is free on $220 bail. Her first court hearing is next month.

Bradenton police were already in the neighborhood investigating a suspicious incident when an officer pulled up to Cattanio, who was in a vehicle. There was no indication in the reports that Cattanio was intoxicated.

Cattanio, using the racial slur, yelled out that the police love black people. Several officers, according to police reports, told Cattanio to stop using the racial slur.

She drove away, still shouting, according to police. Three blocks up the road, police stopped and arrested Cattanio. Her car was towed.

The arrest happened about an hour before local residents staged a ceremonial funeral procession -- marking the death of the "n-word" racial slur.

The local chapter of the NAACP sponsored the ceremonial burial of the derogatory word.

The Rev. Lawrence Livingston of Palmetto, who attended the service, said the use of the word in the black community should stop altogether.

The word, he said, is a painful reminder of the racism in America.

Use of racially-charged language gained national attention in recent months after two prominent figures -- radio talk show host Don Imus and "Seinfeld" actor Michael Richards -- were criticized for its use.

That's not all she was doing, else she wouldn't have gotten arrested.

It was probably for her own protection, too.

(You know these clowns have come to specialize in ineffectual campaigns.

A few years ago they decided to highlight the lack of economic development on the Northside. It consisted of them posting pink signs everywhere that said, "Missing".

Well, we all know how that turned out. The sad thing was that there were some poor Negroes who expected that it would have some effect.)
