LONDON - Female genital mutilation, commonly associated with parts of Africa and the Middle East, is becoming a growing problem in Britain despite efforts to stamp it out. London's Metropolitan Police, Britain's largest police force, hopes a campaign beginning on Wednesday will highlight that the practice is a crime here.

Authorities believe the number of genital mutilation cases peaks in the summer, because the extended school vacation gives girls more time to recover — thereby making it easier for those responsible to cover up their actions.
Female genital mutilation usually involves the removal of the clitoris and other parts of female genitalia. Those who practice it say it tames a girl's sexual desire and maintains her honor.
Let me just say...that though WOMEN are the
ones taught and trained to carry out these
proceedures----it's the Men's Religions and
the Mens' Social Mores that dictate "from birth" that we are taught that...
WOMAN IS IMPURE
The Holy Koran states this.
....and these Men's beliefs that are taught
to the entire society creates a situation where
women have to be "FMG" to be considered decent
for marriage. NO ONE WILL MARRY THEM if they
do not have the cutting----and because women
do not work at all in MOST of these countries,
their only way of having a living is to be
someone's wife.
Therefore, they have to do this for survival.
Believe me when I say that most women grow
up to realize that they don't want their
pussies chopped and cut up--but they are
powerless against the men's social rules.

Kola I don't agree that women are powerless. We are 50% of the population...we raise and socialize our children. Women can not continue to say they are powerless. Many African women consider fgm a sign of honor and it is them that continue to make sure it lives a long, long life. Women must take it in their hands to end it. Men never will....they have nothing to gain by it. The losses and the gains are all ours.
My grandmother raised my mother to be a good slave/wife to her husband. She was raised, like most village West African women to be meek and follow commands. My mother raised me to be the opposite. She broke that chain and I thank her for it whenever I can. African women must continue to break the chains because no one else will do it for us. No one else has ever done much of anything for us. By the way I am writing this from Togo. It is nice to be home! |

In the UK a lot of new mothers are having problems finding out the sex of the baby in certain areas. This is because people from certain groups abort their children on finding out it's a girl because girls are seen as inferior to boys and not carrying on the family name.
I actually thought that was exaggerated bullshit until one of my friend's request for finding out the gender of her baby was refused on these grounds. They do it to all women who ask, black, white and other, so it isn't totally discriminatory.
The only time you can find out your baby's sex in these areas is if there is a medical issue et cetera. |

I agree wholeheartedly that African women tend to be masochists. As far as changing things women argue with me more than the men and it's so frustrating. Maybe things have been this way for so long that they can not change. Even through Christianity and Islam the general way of things persists. Well the fight has been won for me and I guess I should not crusade for others but I can not help it! Not on the macro level but on the micro level I always chastise the women in my family. Many blindly follow their husband's dictates like children. They act so feeble when their husbands around but let them be around women only and it seems like another person comes out. Maybe we have multiple personalities lol.
Yes I am in Togo but certainly from Benin. I am actually on a tour from the Ivory coast home. I had never been to Ghana and it was great. The people are so nice I feel right at home.
Tomorrow I will be in Benin proper. You know west Africa is west Africa. The boarders don't mean much. When I put on my own clothes I can walk across borders like people do every day without a hassle and so on market day you find people from all over who have no plans to get a passport. The European language changes from English to French and back again but we don't speak that with each other.

And I certainly am an EXTREMELY sexual being,
and very "freakish" sexually...
..but then according to statistics...
....fully HALF of women who have been
sexually abused in some manner usually are.
The other half become "introverted" and

I think another part of it...is the fact
that I come from a NILOTIC culture, which

But in Eastern African cultures, the women

told that it comes from the sex slaves of
Queen Vashti and from the biblical slave trade
and it is taught widely as Egypt was famous
for its "gypsy-like" prostitution nomads and
dancing girls.
West African women, and their offspring (Black
American women)...tend to place their sexuality
and their spiritually into two separate compartments.
