Some more young sisters expressing themselves through documentary film making.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11654299

A group of young Brooklyn women grew tired of being sexually propositioned by men on their city's streets. They funneled their frustration into creating Girls for Gender Equity*, an anti-harassment street campaign. Two members of the group talk about the purpose behind their work, captured in the documentary Hey Shorty.

*Here is the web site for the organization these young women are a part of: http://www.ggenyc.org/

Off topic

confession:

Yvette, I'm over six feet and when I was "young", I had terrible complexing over it.

So the first time I was shopping at one of those open magazine markets on the street corner and a black man flirtingly called to me, "Ey, shorty--wass Yo name."

I laughed so hard.

In fact, because I was so naive about the new street talk, I actually let him buy me a copy of Warhol's INTERVIEW magazine and we went two blocks up for coffee and a pastry and I listened to him talk for two hours about his failure to get a rap career going--he was one of those Morehouse men who come to California and end up really disillusioned.

A few weeks later, another black man would call me "Shawty"----my children's father (Thomas "aka" real name Simon) while leaning into my car's passenger window on Crenshaw Blvd. (he later ran me down in London and impregnated me) and the rest is history.

This film is a great idea, but to be honest, I never found this to be a problem in life---and perhaps my height had a lot to do with that.

What I really hate/hated...is when men discreetly "expose" their penis to you in public places with a creepy "look what I've got".

That happened a lot in my 20's/30's and it always left me shaking and upset.

Is there a way for a man to expose his dyck to women he don't know with anything OTHER than a "creepy 'look what I've got'" look?

LOL....an ex-friend of mine used to have the same problem: men calling her shorty and she was at least 5'10" or taller.

I've had two different men offer to model nude for me "for free"....it was so hilarious because they were both blond (which I really don't like) and over 30 while I was maybe in my early twenties or so. I laughed so hard because I was thinking "yeah, as if I'd PAY for it."

The first time I was flashed, I was maybe 8. The last time, I was maybe 26.

I don't know what the heck is up with men wanting women to see them naked. What's the deal, ABM? (not insinuating you would do that, just wondering about this from a guy's point of view).

^^^LOL at ABM.

This film is a good idea, though there is something flattering about a man appreciating you (though you know some of these men would appreciate anyfriggingbody lol) you can also feel horribly exposed.

I remember the first time I got called out by a man when I was eleven I found it slightly disturbing and KNEW it was wrong for such an older man (late 20s perhaps) to be approaching a little girl like me. I didn't like being made to feel like a sexual object at such a young age.

But still, nice knowing I am looking my best with a second glance or a nod from a man....or woman in fact.

ABM:

KOLA:

Hahhahahhaaa!!!

Sure--he could do it like Ronald McDonald and do it comically, although that would be even scarier!!!

I was once riding a greyhound bus, ABM.

There was a white man driving alongside the bus in his truck in the wrong lane and we noticed each other---he nodded to me and I smiled politely.

I looked away.

When I looked back a minute later, he had his penis out and was stroking it and blazing his eyes into mine.

It startled me to the point that I screamed and the other bus riders turned around.

The man sped off passing the bus.

It was horrible.

Then another time, when I was about 15 at the bus stop in D.C., there was a black guy across the street in a government building, like on the 4th floor....he was in the window staring at me as I sat at the bustop.

I looked away, and then moments later when I looked back, he had his penis out--jacking it!

I tried not to look, but I couldn't stop shaking and darting my eyes around, and eventually I saw him explode all over the window.

When my bus pulled up, the black man driving it (my good pal, "O-C.C.") said hello to me and I burst out crying.

I told him what happened and he calmed down during the bus ride--he was the friendliest, kindest old black man.

But it's really scary when men do things like that, though at the age I am now--I would probably just scowl and curse and refused to be annoyed.

Kola, I always said that if that happened to me again, I would point and laugh really loudly.

(which is probably why men don't flash older women. Younger girls will be intimidated. Older women will laugh and ask why they showing that joke around.)

But then again:

I have flashed my tits at men, playfully.

Haha!!!!

Sort of like Drew Barrymore did to Dave Letterman
on his talk show.

I remember maybe 2 or 3 years ago at a party, a famous man (whose name I won't dare mention) drunkenly went off this actress who bumped into him with fake breasts and he angrily said he'd give $1,000 in cash to any woman at the party whose tits were larger than "B" cup and REAL.

Someone pulled me from chatting in another room and I quickly pocketed $1,000 in cash just by unloosing and jiggling my breasts.

Other than Tyra Banks, I was also the only black woman in the place and everyone burst out laughing when I said my occupation was "writer".

Another time, I was driving on the 405 freeway and this gorgeous black truck driver (was that you, NELS?) kept looking down in my car at my cleavage.

So I flashed him.

LOL!!!

His face lit up and he whipped out his cell phone and I suppose was gesturing that I write my number on something and stick it in the window???

I kept flashing him until his turn-off came, but I didn't give my number.

So I have to try and see it from.....

naw, naw.

Playfully jiggling and flashing is a lot different than "ejaculating" and driving in wrong street lanes while tailing young women in buses.

Incidentally, I happen to know that Tyra's boobs are real, too, but obviously, being that she rakes in 30 million a year, she didn't need the 1 grand like I did. :-)

Kola,

I'll bet there are PLENTY of guys who've jacked-it to visions of Kola Boof boobies dancing in (and on) their heads.

Really, you should be flattered.

I'm wondering if anyone has listened to the piece. What these women seem to be talking about and speaking out against is not admiration of women by men, but actual harassment. One woman reported an incident where a man, after not getting the response he wanted from a woman, threw a bottle at her. That is violence, plain and simple--the bottle throwing as well as the aggressive language that preceded it.

The other point the women made was--yes, there may be women who desire this kind of attention. But when a girl/woman makes clear that she is not in the market for that, then the appropriate response should be to just leave her alone. But often, according to these young women, that is not the response they get.

Yvettep,

There are crazy men (and women) in the world. And when their misbehavior infringes upon the rights and space of others they should be punished.

*shrug*

Well, IN AMERICA---a white Judeo Christian society---you could claim that Lili.

But from an African/black perspective, that's not true at all.

But then, ni66erstock are basically the creations of WHITE PEOPLE, right?

So while they think nothing of donning blond wigs and blue glass eyes, they wouldn't necessarily grasp the idea of what their ancestors believed in.

Which is the whole point of an African woman putting herself topless on the back of a book.

You keep your Michael Jackson and your blond cocoa-skinned blue eyed divas and I'll keep my ancient book poses. :-)
