COLUMNIST BLASTS TMZ FOR CALLING BEYONCE ‘ROBOHO’: Jasmyne A. Cannick says here we go again with the H-word.

The website posted the following comment in regards to Beyonce:

"…From Beyonce's roboho performance getup to Eve's streetwalker chic, check out why it's time these artists hired new stylists and put the hip back into hip-hop!..."

Jasmyne A. Cannick:

...there are a many colorful adjectives that TMZ.com could have used and I am curious to know why they went with ho. Was it subconscious? Was it on purpose? Do they not care how that word, thanks in part to websites like TMZ.com and rappers, is becoming more and more synonymous with Black women?

First off - TMZ is an entertainment blog and they are not to be considered as serious journalists. Second - and this is no putdown of Beyonce because she is one of my favorite artists - but if she's dancing around in a sexually provocative manner in the fuckem dress, what are we (the general public) supposed to think of her? I'm not saying she's a ho, but her performances depict that, so why is it wrong for someone to label her performance in a thong and bustier geared robot costume as roboho? It's not as if she's dressed for Sunday school. People need to get a collective grip and find something else to moan about.

To me, Beyonce looks more like a dominatrix than a 'ho. And I'm sure Jay-Z doesn't pay for her services. She can afford to give it away to him for free.

First, Beyonce and her unscrupulous parents/handlers need to give some thought to having a professional work ethic.

First, they tried to steal Des'ree's song without her permission, without paying her for its use and clearing the copyright beforehand. Now Beyonce bit off singer Kylie Minogue's futuristic entrance in that robot-like getup. Not too long ago, Minogue did the same exact entrance in a very similar costume that also opened up to reveal her scantily clad body beneath, at her London concert. I guess Bey and her people didn't think BET's audience would know who the hell Kylie Minogue is, much less ever witness one of KM's performances.

Beyonce is overrated and lacks originality. Essentially, she's getting over by having a cute face, a fantastic figure, and a somewhat bearable singing voice - and her parents are pimping her for all she's worth.

Anybody who can do a back bend and spring up to a standing position while wearing 4-inch stilletto heels got some reeeelly good dancing skills, IMO. Obviously I like Bey. She is what she is; an entertainer. And who among the current black female entertainers is more versatile than this pop princess whose use of a wind machine to blow her long hair extensions while she's strutting around is being imitated by other wanna-bes.

Who knows or cares if she's a whore, I don’t. And neither does Cannick based on what she wrote in the article. On topic: Black female performers are the only ones being referred to in this manner. Why is "Ho" being held in reserve just for Black women and not for others who wear their clothes the same way? I don't pay much attention to pop-culture but I've seen worse.

Beyonce got the wind machine idea from Jennifer Lopez. In fact, her look was greatly inspired from Jennifer and Mariah Carey.

White women in the entertainment industry get trashed as well. I don't know if they get called a ho but I don't see why they wouldn't. One recent episode was when Dallas Austin declared that he received favors (from white women) in exchange for studio recording time. This is demeaning as well, especially since the women he made the comments about don't need to engage in that sort of petty conduct. And so the problem of men sexualizing and belittling females (by calling them names or referring to them as mere sex toys) isn't exclusive to Black women.

http://www.absolutepictures.com/news.php?id=2459

Here's your solution if it bothers you so much: Start a blog about white hos and get over it.

Name your blog "WhiteWomenAreHosToo"

Actually wind machines go back to the 80s and Beyonce may have been taken a few cues from Jennifer Lopez but as a performer, Mariah is not in a class with Beyonce.

Look, I wasn't complaining I was commenting about the issue. Why do you behave as if my posts here at Thumpers are addressed towards you directly or specifically. This is a public forum and there are other posters/readers/lurkers, not just us. You're aware of that, correct? Yes, you posed the query of why does it happen just to Black women, but perhaps there are other "progressive" Black women out here with that same backwards thinking who need enlightenment. Anyway, the shit must bother you since you started a thread about Beyonce being called RoBoHo so fukc off and stop starting bullshit with me.

and that's it in a nutshell....that article calling beyonce a roboho did nothing more than prove how uncomfortable whites (and many black people for that matter) are with black sexuality...you have to wonder why is black sexuality always attacked... and why does it seem to be getting worst and worst for black women the more they move up in the area of desirability? there's a reason for it....

Anyway, it seems that calling a Black women GHETTO HOES or NAPPY HEADED HOES is now the new acceptable way of calling them NIGGERS or BITCHES!! And since rappers and many Black men say it then ALL THE BETTER!! Which is why Don Imus and his "ilk" feel that they can get away with it.

"Right! And they didn't even call Brittany Spears and that whole Paris Hilton gang Hos when they found out they were going out clubbing sans panties!"

Well, that's not exactly true A_womon. I've seen a lot of blistering criticism of Spears and Hilton in the media. But for some bizarre reason, the American public has an insatiable craving for more sordid stories and coverage of these Hollywood skanks. As ignorant, childish and nasty as they are, I cannot even begin to explain why anyone would have a need to see or read anything about either.

"Not even when that nasty picture of her giving a shot of her baby maker when she was getting out of her car surfaced among other ho-ish type shit her and her girls were doing."

They are skanky, no doubt. But why America is obsessed with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lisa Lohan, Paris Hilton or the tragic life and demise of Anna Nicole Smith, is beyond me. But you can bet your last dollar, if any of the aforementioned ho's were black, you wouldn't hear about them....period!

True NTFS, they did roast them in the media and called them a lot of things but ho wasn't one of them. The fact that they weren't called hos specifically only seems to confirm the fact that white people reserve that term for black women. In fact I think Imus getting fired over the use of the term only added incentive for them to fling the word at black women every chance they get now.

I agree. The word "ho" has inextricably been tied to black women. But we as black people contribute to this. Others just follow.

"In fact I think Imus getting fired over the use of the term only added incentive for them to fling the word at black women every chance they get now."

On the money! As I said, Imus was parroting the misogynistic excrement of the gangsta rap coon culture. Their notorious debasement of black women (and all women for that matter) is just a free pass for others. Your assessment is correct.

You know, I used to believe that people would understand the demeaning lyrics in rap songs was not meant to be aimed solely and exclusively at black women, but rather all women in general. But considering the backlash and fallout that has erupted of late, I've had to rethink my former stance on this issue.
It's now obvious to me that people in general and white people specifically, DO believe that rappers are only talking about black women. I don't know if this is because most rappers are black, or the fact that black women allow themselves to be filmed in the videos that depict them as the hos rappers are singing about.
I formerly thought that people would just confine whatever thoughts they had about rapper's lyrics to that particular medium, but now I see that the implications have a much broader effect than I believed. How sad.

Don Imus and his ilk feel they can get away with it because of a centuries long legacy of white supremecy. Since when did White men need the ok of a black man to do anything?

"You know, I used to believe that people would understand the demeaning lyrics in rap songs was not meant to be aimed solely and exclusively at black women, but rather all women in general."

You would think so but that's not the case. Since the genre was created, nurtured and developed by blacks, the imagery and all it's trappings have been associated with being black.

"It's now obvious to me that people in general and white people specifically, DO believe that rappers are only talking about black women. I don't know if this is because most rappers are black, or the fact that black women allow themselves to be filmed in the videos that depict them as the hos rappers are singing about."

A_womon, I think you answered all your questions and thoughts. Although the lascivious behavior rappers love to rail and brag about can be found in all women, the spotlight is on black women. Even though there are a mix of women in the videos, black women dominate them. As a result, they have achieved ultimate objectification.

Ya know, some of it is so bad, I will never understand why any woman would allow her self to be so degraded and disrespected (not to mention the negative blow back on black women as a group) by these ignorant ass thuggish coons. I really don't get. Do these women really believe being seen gyrating, flapping their butt cheeks, crawling on their knees in one of these tasteless coon toon videos is going to get them an acting contract or a phone call from Steven Spielberg. What am I missing...???

"I formerly thought that people would just confine whatever thoughts they had about rapper's lyrics to that particular medium, but now I see that the implications have a much broader effect than I believed. How sad."

It is sad. It does appear that people have bought into the racist misogyny of negative images of black women by the narcissistic thug coon culture and their white corporate supporters. Unfortunately, black women as a group, have the burden of the cross on their backs. They are the victims of a number of confused and impressionable young black males who have bought into thug gangsta coonery. But ya know something, black people as a group bear much responsibility for this. As a race of people, we should never pass up the opportunity to speak out against a rancorous minority of Negroes gone wild. Remember, the majority of black men and black women are not connected to the celebrated knucklehead culture. So why should we let them represent us with their shameless, hedonistic, criminal, mindless clownish behavior?

Good Question! Especially now that we know the world is watching and (quite unfairly!) judging our ENTIRE COMMUNITY based on these images! It amazes me that I even wrote what I just did. I would have NEVER believed a few years back that other groups/communities would actually imagine that most black people are represented by RAP Videos! It's UNREAL

:-) Don't forget the sellout coons at the top y'all---that portion of the Blk middle class that spend all their time sucking on massah's ass & fucking up shit for Blk people. They're just as bad as the rappers, prob'ly even worse.

"Good Question! Especially now that we know the world is watching and (quite unfairly!) judging our ENTIRE COMMUNITY based on these images! It amazes me that I even wrote what I just did."

Absolutely! You are so correct. This has always been my point. In fact, my best friend and I were discussing this exact same topic about an hour ago (he has two kids to worry about -ages 13 and 12). He said "exactly" what you did. He found it disturbing and unacceptable that black Americans have allowed a brazen minority of the ugliest and worst to represent us as a group.

"I would have NEVER believed a few years back that other groups/communities would actually imagine that most black people are represented by RAP Videos! It's UNREAL."

Agreed. But we have no one to blame but ourselves since we have allowed this coon cancer to metastasize in our communities. Many of us have mutely stood by while our children have been hypnotized and influenced by these thuggish buffoons. So sad.....

The interesting thing about this is that Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton can be filmed in the back of a Hollywood nightclub giving a Blowjob to five different guys and it all be caught on tape by the paparazzi but NO ONE in the world will DARE call these women whores, sluts etc!!

IN FACT they will be praised in the media and by society for "BEING BRAVE ENOUGH TO EXPRESS THERE SEXUALITY".

HOWEVER, all a black woman has to do is "shake her hips, or smack her lips" in a suggestive manner and she will automatically be labeled a "Ho".

The July issue of EBONY discusses this issue in an article titled "The Culture of Disrespect: How did we get here?"

It kind of makes you wonder what kind of negative impact WE ON THIS BOARD have had on our community with all of the vitriolic insults we are constatly hurling at one another.

I beleive white people will think (or ptretend to think) what they want about us and it has less to do with how we act on tv and more to do with their own ignorance and twisted need for power and to feel superior over other groups in order to validate their own self-worth.

before rap videos we were still seen (and portrayed) in a negative light. while i do think rap music aids in keeping these stereotypes going, i doubt that they're the main reason white people beleive the way they do.

kind of makes you want to go "who cares what they think?" no matter how you behave you're still black and most whites ive run into still have a very twisted sense of self-worth so why bother???

very true...it really is sickening....

not only that but i dont see what's so whorish about simply having a natural rhythm when it comes to knowing how to move your hips and butt...isn't that the traditional way our ancestors danced anyway? kind of makes you wonder if gyrating the hips and buttocks was only labeled immoral simply because africans did it ...but just because whites didnt do it and most still cant do it as well it's supposedly immoral and overly-sexual...they labeled chubby-cheker and josephine bakers dances too sexual simply because they couldnt do it but they soon tried to immitate them....the hypocracy amongst many whites never ceases to amaze me...lol

Misty, that's exactly how I used to think a couple of years ago, but as someone pointed out, whites still hold the power in this country, and when they begin rightly or wrongly to use rap videos and their portrayal of black people to justify their racist thinking it becomes dangerous. Those in power, especially when that power structure is as corrupt as it is at present, can make laws, undo laws, and deconstruct laws to fit their twisted purpose.

"not only that but i dont see what's so whorish about simply having a natural rhythm when it comes to knowing how to move your hips and butt..."

I agree there is nothing whorish about moving naturally in dance, but when you have a video showing five or six half naked women pushing their thonged asses all up in the camera with the star rapper bouncing crosses between thier butt cheeks while they rap about how "they do they hos" I mean you can't call that moving with natural rythm, it's downright disgusting, when you think about it. And what message are we bombarding young teenaged girls with? But I feel you, because I used to think just like you!

and that's it in a nutshell....that article calling beyonce a roboho did nothing more than prove how uncomfortable whites (and many black people for that matter) are with black sexuality...you have to wonder why is black sexuality always attacked... and why does it seem to be getting worst and worst for black women the more they move up in the area of desirability? there's a reason for it....

LWI: Good point misty. Seems like some people are uncomfortable that Black women can be beautiful and sexy and sexual at ease and confident.

Kylie Minogue as done a lot more procative performances than Beyonce but is rarely called out as sexually irresponsible, she is almost idolised and a sexual icon.

However, I don't know if Beyonce being called a 'ho' is necessarily a slur on Black women. Beyonce is a hypocrite (back in the day she was anyway). She claimed to be some holier-than-thou, 'I only wear on stage what I could in a church' type girl-woman but totally contradicts herself with her videos and lyrics.

Maybe that is why she has being called such an insulting term. A lot of the other 'sexual icons' haven't claimed to be anything but that.

And Naomi Campbell has been linked with many men et cetera but hasn't been called a 'ho' in the mainstream media. Maybe it is because they focus on her anger a lot more, or it is just the way you carry yourself.
