Black Students Still Favor Lighter Skin, Study Finds

A majority of African American students polled at a Midwestern university say lighter complexions are more attractive than darker ones, according to a study conducted by researchers from two Louisiana schools.
The results, taken from a sample of 100 students, indicated that 96 percent of the men preferred a medium to light complexion in women while 70 percent of women found light skin of value in men.
This latest analysis of mating preferences explored a number of probable causes, all of which were rooted in the "colorism" prevalent from slavery through the 1960s, where lighter skin typically meant more privilege. The results were published in 2006 in the journal Race, Gender and Class.
Ashraf Esmail, a sociology and criminal justice professor at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, and Jas M. Sullivan, an assistant professor of political science and African American Studies at Louisiana State University, conducted the study.
According to Sullivan, its purpose was to test whether the color line continues to be a problem for the African American community.
“We know that there has been a preference for lighter skin in the past as a result of racism,” said Sullivan, “but we really wanted to know whether or not that preference still exists in the 21st century.”
The researchers asked 50 African American men and 50 African American women, all students at a large Midwestern university, to participate in semi-structured interviews. The university was not named in the study and Sullivan declined to provide the name for this story.
The students were all between 18 and 19 years old with complexions ranging from light to dark. Each subject was shown pictures of light, medium and dark-skinned men or women from fashion magazines and asked to rate the images based on attractiveness. In addition, each respondent was asked questions about their mating preferences in terms of skin color and about the value of skin color in the African American community.
One reason for the difference in answers between African American men and African American women, according to the authors, is that women tended to take more characteristics into account, such as lips, hair, eyes, height and style of dress, when determining a man's attractiveness.
The interviews pointed to slavery and a social stigma attached to darker skin.
“I think that people are valued for their light skin,” said one student. “You can take this theory way back to the house slave mentality. I think a lot of people, because that was valued, were taught to value light skin. I think it is still an ongoing type of thing, and society really has not lost that altogether.”
Both men and women cited media as a driving force in the preference for lighter skin.
“When you talk to a guy, he thinks that he wants a perfect girl he sees on the videos. Usually, the women portrayed in the videos are light-skinned and have long hair,” said one respondent.
Still, another participant argued that African Americans don’t divide themselves based on light and dark complexions. Rather, the greater issue is color prejudice in the United States as a whole.
“Black people just see all black people as black no matter if they are light or dark. If you have any black in you, the black community considers you black.”
Analysis for the Esmail-Sullivan study took place in 2000. Though it is the most recent on the subject, its results differ dramatically from an earlier study of African American college students conducted in 1997.
Louie E. Ross, then associate professor of sociology at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, N.C., interviewed 149 African American men and 236 African American women for his study, "Mate Selection Preferences among African American College Students." His research was conducted on the campuses of two historically black institutions in the Southeast; one public and one private.
The Ross study indicated that only 16.4 percent of women would prefer to date a person of a lighter complexion and 16.8 percent of women would want to marry a person with light skin. The study showed that 33.3 percent of men preferred to date a person of a lighter complexion and 38.3 would prefer lighter skin in a marriage partner.
Taken together, the research by Esmail and Sullivan and the earlier research by Ross indicate that colorism does have some impact on the African American community.
Esmail and Sullivan concluded that, “Further research in this area is needed. Clearly, colorism continues to plague the African-American community and we must first accept that claim and begin to find solutions that would ameliorate the superiority of light skin color to dark skin color.”
Sullivan said there were plans to expand the research to other schools and to include historically black colleges. One of the issues he and Esmail plan to address is that colorism isn’t unique to the African American community, he said.
The New York Times reported on May 30 that the most popular cosmetic products among modern Indian women are those that lighten the skin. Didier Villanueva, country manager for L’Oreal India, said in the article that "fairness creams" account for half of India’s skin care market.
In the 2005 book "Fair Women, Dark Men: The Forgotten Roots of Color Prejudice," Canadian anthropologist Peter Frost reports that lighter women were preferred in medieval Japan, Aztec Mexico and Moorish Spain, even before there was significant contact with Western ideology.
Sullivan said, “What we sought to uncover in this study is whether or not the preference for lighter skin still exists" in the African American community. “Clearly you could make the connection between the preference for lighter skin and the past, but the deeper question, the question that needs much more observation is the why. Why does the black community self-select? Is this preference a dormant trait, is it something psychological, or is it just that light skin is all we see in the media and that affects our choices? These are the questions that still need answering.”
Other studies published by Esmail and Sullivan include: "Black Candidates in Search of Electoral Support: Is Success Dependent on Residential Integration and Social Interaction?" (2003), "Interaction Patterns between Black and White College Students: For Better or Worse?" (2002), and "From Racial Uplift to Personal Economic Security: Declining Idealism in Black Education" (2002).

i'm not surprised that louisianna has a color complex but i was surprised to read that 70% of the GIRLS found light skinned guys more attractive because most black girls and women i know prefer darker guys.....but louisianna is the worst place when it comes to the color complex and even the women are effected by it. i wonder how it would be if they tested all over though outside of louisianna. |

This is so true. Negroes are still emotionally laboring over this dismal issue as if it is recent or going away. Read this: IT'S NOT!!!!!! And it is not only blacks who suffer from the "we like 'em light syndrome". A friend of mine who now lives in Oakland, was stunned to personally witness the pervasive daily comments and obsession of skin color by the young blacks she worked with. Not defending or attempting to trivialize the issue, but please remember folks, this skin color thing is not limited to just Negroes.....trust me!

So....these geniuses did surveys on two assbackwards ("large Midwestern"--which one, exactly???)universities, and came to the conclusion that the vast majority of black students favor light skin?
Why didn't they try historically black colleges? Aren't most black people there?
In my opinion, the "evidence" is inconclusive, though a lot of color-prejudice infests my old alma mater, Howard University(and even so, if you were big, black and had lots of money, you could have just about any coed you wanted). |

The irony of all of this is that were the situation reversed, dark-skinned people wouldn't act any different than those whom they criticize and resent. Colorism is as form of bias that has its origin in the primitive subconscious of our brains and this instinct takes the form of a "dislike for the unlike". This natural reaction of the dominate species prevails in a territory where the majority rules. Welcome to the USA, folks. And so it goes. IMO. |

I think part of it is this: Some of you have "Negro" stamped on your birth certificate; that's a FACT. You're trying to defend your past and preserve the origins of who you are. I think it's called "self-preservation" or something like that. But young folks don't have an excuse for possessing a slave mentality. We're in the age of information. If you can afford to educate yourself and you're not a part of that time when such info was limited (in studies, college courses, Journals, reviews, books, magazines, etcetera) you have no excuse.

i wasnt saying colorism isnt prevalent...i've always known this as we discuss it on the board constantly and as you say just by watching music videos.... i was commenting more on the fact that 70% of the girls at louisianna university found light skin men more attractive than dark men. this shocked me because most black girls and women that ive come in contact with say they prefer darker men and dont use lightness of skin to determine a mate. most black women i know suffer from colorism in a different way (such as trying to get lighter and hair straightening, etc)....but not when it comes to choosing a mate...so that was the part of the article that surprised me other than that everything else was pretty much common knowledge |

Well, Tonya, what you contend doesn't address the idea that were the situation reversed, things would be different. Reaching that conclusion is not a slave mentality, it's a realisitic observation. You go on the defense because that's your only choice. You attempt to villify people who are what they are, because you are what you are. Then you haul out all of the catch phrases and labels trying to make others wrong, and yourself right, blaming young people for not seeing what you consider the error of their ways. But who are you to tell them what to prefer and not prefer? What are your credentials and what incentives do you offer? |

When did I "villify" self-preservation; who did I "tell" to do anything; how did I "blame" anyone AT ALL or more than any other opinion giver on this thread; and why is it that I'm the lone person to "go on the defense"? I don't know if it is your perception or if obfuscation is your only method to succeed in debates.

My bad Misty. You're right; I was shocked by that number too, and for the same reason, but I kinda always knew that some girls were lying when they said that, still 70% that figure is way high, it's even more than I expected. |

you have to remember though that that is louisianna, the most backwards, uneducated place in america...not only that but colorism was always stronger down there than in other states.
so i would like to see them do this same study in other states and see what their findings would be on black girls choices in mates. |

Some of our best and brightest were/are color-struck, Misty. Virtually all of our past intellectuals were said to be this way. And a sistah just cited a stat where 60 % of Black men making 100,000 or more are with non-black women. (60%) It's hard to believe that these men are mostly "uneducated" and "backwards", making 100,000 a year.

this is true. it depends on the type of education they got though...for instance usually blacks who are color struck like this have either been educated at white institutions, black mainstream conservative type institutions or havent been educated at all...of course blacks who have been educated at institutions where the focus is on black culture and history are less likely to have that mentality....that's pretty much what i meant.....usually people who educate themselves on their own history (especially pre-colonial history)tend to be less likely to develop a colorstruck mentality
Virtually all of our past intellectuals were said to be this way. And a sistah just cited a stat where 60 % of Black men making 100,000 or more are with non-black women.
i remember reading that stat but cant help but think that black men who make that kind of money are more likely to run into white women and other races than they are to run into black women. therefore, their choices in possibly mates amongst non-black women are higher. 2 years ago i had heard that that stat was 50%. it's a wonder the stat isnt higher.

I thought by "uneducated" and "backwards" you meant "unsophisticated" since these 100 students are obviously being educated "at a large Midwestern university" no less. Btw, the researchers are from Louisiana. The state where the students are from was not given, I don't think. And last I checked, just as many Black women are making the kind of money that I referred to as Black men, maybe even more, but on these I could be wrong.

Or, do you believe that taking young people to task is an example of your presuming you have the credentials to "tell" them what they should do. BTW, you never responded as to what the incentive was for them to follow your instructions.

Uhhhhhhh.....I don't think so. I'm sorry Ms. Misty but your assessment is sorely lacking in credibility and substance. People are into what they are into regardless of their educational level. I have met a large number of brothers who had little to no formal education beyond high school who preferred lighter complexioned women. I graduated from a predominately white university ( about 92%) and I never associated with any of the white students nor did I have an obsession for the light complexioned sista's.
My best friend and I went to the same white university. He now teaches at Mississippi State University. He married his college sweetheart -a medium brown complexioned sista. They are still married and have two children. He has a PhD in political science. How did he resist the high yalla addiction virus?
A guy I went to high school with in Ohio was obsessed with so-called high yalla's. I saw him many years later in down town Los Angeles. I thought he had outgrown his color struck ways. He told me she was married and then he grabbed my arm with a big grin on his face and proudly stated, ".....and she's light skinned too!!!!" He has no idea what a college even looks like.
When I was in the Navy, a brother said to me one day; "I loves me some red bones". I asked him and two other brothers who were from the South about their tendency to favor lighter complexioned women. All three did not deny their preferences and just shrugged it off as, "Hey -What can I say? It's what I like." End of subject.
I knew of a black woman who once told me, "If a brother is light skinned, he's already halfway through the door with me." Those were her exact words. And she was light complexioned!!!! Why did she feel that way? She had not been educated at white institution nor a black mainstream conservative type institution as you have suggested. She was a high school grad and had some community college education.
Sorry my dear, but there is no proven credible link between education and skin color preference. I know you want to believe that (your comments about education and skin color preference) but your desire to believe something does not make it true.

so ntfs i guess to you its natural that 96% of the men at the louisianna universities found lighter skinned women more attractive while 70% of the women were more attracted to light skinned men?
are you saying this many students just happened to be born this way and that there were no outside influences that influenced their preferences??? to say that is equivalent to saying that its natural for the majority of people to prefer lighter skin to darker skin and that in and of itself would mean darker skin is by nature less attractive since most of these people prefer lighter skin.
do you have any scientific proof or credible sources that show skin color to be a major (or the main) factor in sexual selection for men and women? because if not then you should be the last one to claim anyones statement lacks credibility. |

tonya, the last stats i read still showed black men earn more money than black women.
but even if it were the case that black women earned just as much money, there are still 10 times as many white women making that same amount of money and who tend to run in middle to upper-class social circles. |

1) I did not use that as a slur nor do I ever. The term I often use is nig.ger. Which anybody who read my post would know, but you just chose to lie to make a groundless baseless point
2) I said "Some of you have "Negro" stamped on your birth certificate..." and I said it NOT in conjunction with "slave mentality" ANOTHER LIE as that term was used later on in my post when I switched over to discussing the lack of excuses YOUNG PEOPLE have for being colorist.

but that would be to assume that successfulblack men are specifically looking for black women.
for a successful man who is just looking for a woman without regard to skin color hes more likely to end up with a white woman than a black one...and this doesnt nessesarily mean he's excluding black women or is not attracted to black women, he's jsut open to all races and white women tend to be around more since they're more likely than black women to be in the same social circles and economic range as he is.
so i think the argument would still pretty much suffice. yes there are plenty successful black women but when you compare the number to white (or asian) women it would be pretty low especially when you consider that blacks period only make up 12 % of the population, the number gets even lower when you start talking about ones who are making over 60,000.

while were on the subject of preference ntfs, do you think that its natural for a black woman to "prefer" that her own skin be lighter...you think that's just a natural preference? if you say no then how would mate selection would be any different?
i think we have cases where some people are just strong minded enough to resist brainwashing while most aren't. you also have cases where some people just tended to come from families that were more color struck whereas others didn't have as much of a problem with it...everyones case and experiences wiht colorism is different however our experiences, surroundings and upbringing do for the most part affect how we view the world arround us. |

i can see maybe a few people preferring a certain skin complexion or maybe i could even see it being around half and half but when that number is 96% and 70% there is obviously something else going on outside of being born with a preference. |

Yes white men aided in the brainwashing along with arabs…..if not then how do you explain the fact that places like japan just didn’t have this view that light skin = better and India didn’t equate light skin with beauty and importance before white globalization and arab take over? In fact japan and India were the complete opposite before white and Aryan invasion…in their cultures darker skin was at one time more coveted. Nor were the Japanese, Chinese, Egyptians , people form India and Arabs obsessed with blonde hair before European globalizion….most people in those cultures held a preference for dark hair. Several africann cultures before European colonialism held a preference for darker skin and the women actually tried to darken their skin instead of lighten it unlike today. Because there is no really strong genetic link between sexual makeup and skin color however there is a VERY strong genetic link between sexual makeup and body build. Women by nature are on average shorter than men (hence, why men prefer shorter women and women go for taller men), women on average have wider hips, fatter thighs, larger butts, and larger breasts than men (which is why men on average prefer women with these attributes). Women have longer legs and shorter torsos than men (hence, why men prefer women with long legs). Men on average are more muscular than women, taller with more narrow hips (which is why women prefer men with these attributes)…. are you getting me?? |

not saying the person is morally wrong as we cant help who we like for the most part (especially if its been beaten into our heads since day one) but a person can try being intellectually honest with themselves and admit that social forces may have something to do with their preferences and try not to pass their biased mentality onto the next generation. i'm not demonizing people and saying that a man or woman who has a preference for light skin should all of a sudden stop dating light skin women/men but at least be intellectually honest and dont try to ridicule people who may feel that the preference has to do with more than being born that way.
often this goes deeper than preferences though...there is an out and out HATRED of darker skin people that exists everywhere....and this hatred often comes from people who claim to just have nothing more than a "preference." the reason preferences for light skin often turn into hatred of dark skin comes from the fact that anything black has always been hated and we live in a white supremist society.....you dont hear about men who prefer big boobs hating women with small ones...you also dont hear about women who prefer men with big muscles hating skinny men but you DOP hear case after case of people who prefer lighter skin ridiculing someone and showing outright hatred towards people with darker skin...this is because there is no stigma attached to women with small boobs or skinny men however there IS a stigma attached to dark skin.. so maybe thats why the skin color issue is so much more important than a man preferring a woman with big breasts or a woman preferring a muscular man because no one has ever been hated on the bases that they have small breasts however people have always been hated on account of thier skin color (especially if they have dark skin)...there were never cases where signs were hung up saying no small boobed women allowed.....no instead signs said no blacks and no dogs allowed. |

also as far as china and japans preference for white skin goes...alot of that can be explained by the fact that the rich sat inside and didnt have to work whereas the peasants were always outdoors....therefore in japan light skin came to be associated with beauty and it became an ideal standard...those in power have always controlled the standards. white globolization came along and reinforced (as well as perverted) some of the standards that were already in chinese and japanese cultures (not only did iit reinforce the light skin beauty standard but it introduced standards that werent there before such as blonde hair which was at one time viewed as repulsive by ancient pre-colonial chinese societies) .
however it is true that when africans ruled japan at one time the japanese actually coveted dark skin and tried to make their skin darker...they even went as far as trying to flatten out their babies skulls to make their face wider and noses wider in order to immulate africans (all of this is explained in the link to the article i posted to you). so again all of this reinforces what ive beens aying all along,,,those in power set the standards for everything including beauty. |

There are many outrageous prefences in racial or social groups. In the UK, especially Liverpool, having a tan is seen as beautiful and we have MANY tan-o-rexics. I know people who say they feel 'ugly' without their brown holiday skin so use sunbeds and fake tan oils.
There have been many cases of teenagers who have skin like thirty-odd year olds because of their obsession. And several times people have said to me 'I wish I could get as brown as you' or even 'my nephew had jaundice and when he goes in the sun he is alomost your colour'. LMAO.
Out here people laugh and take it as a joke, but 'colourstruck' is more of a problem in the black community because of our colonisation history. We were told that lighter skin was more beautiful. However, I think for quite a few Black people lighter skin, like darker skin, is simply a prefernce. People often over analyse this prefence too much and always assume that someone liking lighter skin is hating themselves.

What baffles me is: What constitutes "light-skinned" and what constitutes "dark-skinned"? Aren't those subjective terms? If you asked a White person what color I am, they'd tell you I'm dark-skinned. If you asked a Black person what color I am, they'd tell you I'm light-skinned. AND THEY WOULD BOTH BE RIGHT!
I think this is how people determine who's light and who's dark; and clearly there are too many variables for these perceptions to be reliable. Essentially, someone will call you dark-skinned if you're darker than they are, and light-skinned if you're lighter than they are.
For example, my third son, my "darkest" child, is about a shade deeper than a brown paper bag. (Sorry for the crude comparison, but that's the only color I can compare him to that we're all familiar with). To me, due to my coloring, my son is "dark," but I've heard people with darker complexions than my son refer to him as "light."
So, really, what is the cut-off point between dark and light, and by whose standards? Clearly there's no definitive, concrete answer.
Further, to rely on a skin color preference study coming out of Louisiana, of all places, and conducted on such a small sample/control group is absurd! |

And ostensibly slavery was abolished and jim crow discontinued and tennis and golf integrated by blacks, but the reality is that racism still exists and is manifest because it is embedded in the psyche and institutions of the greater population; just like colorism. |

so what Ive been honest Cynique but my point is I dont believe blacks are going to be the level of colorstruck we have been before I do think its changing and I see many signs of darker skin raising there children different and those kids are rebeling it reminds me of black teens who changed the south in the 60s so dont misunderstand what Im saying because most of us from you and my generation didnt even realize we were colorstruck I dont believe this has been on purpose but subconsous and the subconsous can change there was a time very dark skin men were not wanted by anybody and you remember those days Cynique! things can change among blacks themselves if not the whites. |

Let me clarify what I meant by darkskin/lightskin preferences being ingrained in the human psyche since there are dimwits (i.e. discombobulated whose trolly ass I don't really care to address but I'll make an exception) who can't comprehend the obvious. It's a damn shame people get castigated for stating facts on this forum.
Thru the years, the following has been the standard belief throughout most cultures:
White = clean, goodness, light, purity, etc.
Black = dirt, darkness, evil, death, etc.
And we use such terms as the following to convey good and bad:
White magic
Black magic
White lie
Black sheep

The human mind has very distinct reactions to color and also to skin color. That's the way it's always been and that's the way it will always be. Now, if you have some facts that contradict what is stated above, please post those.
U.S. - I'm not sure if you were responding to my post but I was addressing how skin tone is perceived within the Black community, not by the other races/ethnicities amongst themselves or how they view our skintones. The other races/ethnicities have their own colorism issues, this issue is not exclusive to Blacks - but you know that already. I would say light skin is anything up to caramel/peanut butter, and dark skin is anything that's darker than a chocolate candy bar. No offense intended to anyone.
And this is something else that I've gathered over the years. The reason that dark men and light woman attract is because of the contrast. It's just more interesting.

All we hear from "you" and others is how colorism is being perpetuated in mainstream America by the media. Your little anecdotal example to the contrary are apparently not widespread as the title of this thread attests to. In the general population blacks marry who they are attracted to no matter what the shade of their skin is, - just as they always have. So the "status" is "quo". |

mzuri, black has not always been equated with bad and white has not always been equated with good....i have alot of references to back this up.....the idea of white being equated with good is quite modern when you consider the age of the planet earth because in the past in many ancient societies (especially in africa, the carribbean and amongst the australian aborigines) white was equated with evil and everything bad whereas black represented the complete opposite...this was also true for india before aryan invasion. and even in ancient rome they worshipped many statues that were jet black and these held no bad connotations. |

It's an insult in their community to wear black to a funeral, just as it is for us to where white to a funeral. The colors mean nothing, people just throw their own personal feelings on color. In Cyprus, it's no big deal if the close family members (even the mothers) wear black to a wedding. Try doing that in the US. None of it means ANYTHING. People make too much out of nothing. |

Around where I live, at summer funerals you very often see the entire family of mourners wearing white. And people around here wear black to weddings all the time, and this includes the bridesmaids. Contrary to what Renata so blithely states, these not "no-nos" in all parts of the country. |

Slaves were referred to as "colored" in this country. They were also called "darkies" and "negroes". "Black" was not in official usage until the 1960s when white people started calling us black because that was what we wanted to be called. Black has both negative and positive connotations. Oil is called "black" gold. A time when something dire has happend is called a "black day". Being in the "black" is good when it comes to bookkeeping, but black-mailers are considered evil people. Whether black is bad or good changes from situation to situation, obviously. |

BTW, I spend two years in the liberal arts curriculm at the University of Illinois, a Big 10 school with an impeccable academic reputation and I'll match that tenure against a lot of 4 year schools. The book was really fun to write. I had just discovered all of the really cool features on a word processor and once I put my fingers on the keyboard, the story just kind of possessed me, and I had this tremendous sense of being omnipotent and omniscient because I was in total control of what my characters did and thought. So, actually, the fulfillment was in the journey, not the destination. My concise style of writing is to "tell" rather than "show" and this didn't lend itself well to novel writing. So much for that. |
