I paused on my way home at the end of the block which is a cul de sac, to rap to a brother who was standing there and who asked me the time.
All the sudden shots rang out. This was about 5:00 pm.
The brother: That was gunshots.
Me: Sure was.
We went back to rapping about whatever it was we was rapping about. |

I am happy to say that I have been fortunate enough to never live in a neighborhood where this type of occurrence is common. (Or happens at all!) You should move, Chris. It can't be healthy for your spirit to become so accepting of such an atmosphere. |

Move where? Baghdad? How about that town Virginia Tech is in? Maybe Columbine, Colorado. How about NYC where you can get shot 41 times by the cops reaching for your wallet?
This is AMERICA babe. I am getting used to it. I am getting so I LIKE it. (Which shall last as long as me and mine ain't getting shot or shot at) Obviously it has happened before and been happening for years.
We in the hood get almost a perverse kick out of watching people from outside jump at the shots while we sit calmly--if they ain't directed at you or nearby it ain't nothing to get excited about.
Coming soon to a neighborhood near you.
My cousin was by the house a couple days ago and told me about a young girl who moved way out of the city and moved back. The quiet was killing her.

(Your words reminded me of the late 60's when kids from Chicago and Philadelphia would tell me about things like that going on in their towns and I couldn't believe it.

That is probably one of the things that happens to you when you live in such an environment for a long time: You begin to get a warped view of the level of violence that exists elsewhere. Like the studies that show that folks watching a lot of local news overestimate crime rates.
Violent crime is not inevitable everywhere. Perhaps the type of attitude you express (lack of surprise, acceptance, liking the violence, etc) contributes to the perpetuation of this kind of atmosphere.

(I have to admit it's a rare day passes I don't think about SMOKIN' a couple of n***as--but I grew up in the 50's and I Mzuri and Cynique's posts don't affect me like that all the time! |
