Y'all ain't heard this from me..

Dad's book is no Oprah pick

Oprah Winfrey

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Eva Longoria channeled her inner athlete at last weekend's 'Spike for Hope' charity volleyball tournament in California.
It could be a chilly Father's Day for Oprah Winfrey 's dad.

The talk queen tells us she's "shocked" and "disappointed" that she had to hear it from the Daily News that her 74-year-old pop, Vernon, is writing a book about her.

Winfrey said she laughed recently when "one of my assistants said, 'The Daily News is calling. They say they heard your father is writing a book about you.' I said, 'That's impossible. I can assure them it's not true.'

"But then my sister said, 'I think you should call your father.' I called him and it turned out he is writing a book. The worst part of it was him saying, 'I meant to tell you I've been working on it.' "

Winfrey, 53, confided, "I was upset. I won't say 'devastated,' but I was stunned."

"The last person in the world to be doing a book about me is Vernon Winfrey," she added. "The last person."

Oprah was 14 and pregnant when she left her mother's home in Milwaukee to live with her father in Nashville. Her baby died weeks after he was born. She has said before that she's grateful to her father for helping her go on, for teaching her discipline and the importance of education.

Nevertheless, Vernon, who plans to call his book, "Things Unspoken," was quoted as saying he should have been tougher on her, because Oprah was "out of hand and an unruly child."

"I have a good relationship with him," Oprah told us Sunday, when she received the Elie Wiesel Foundation Humanitarian Award at the Waldorf. Though she hasn't seen Vernon since he accompanied her on a trip to Africa a few months ago,
she said, "We talk, we talk, we talk."

That's why "I would have preferred to have known my father was working on this. It would have been a nice gesture, a courtesy," she said.

Vernon isn't the only biographer Winfrey has on her tail. This month, an Illinois court dismissed extortion charges against
Keifer Bonvillain, who sought $1.5 million for "embarrassing" information he claimed was destined for a book. Oprah is letting her lawyers deal with it - "whatever happens, happens."

Potentially more troubling is the bio Kitty Kelley has under construction.

Oprah said she won't try to interfere with it. "I'm not cooperating with it, but if she wants to write a book, fine. This is America. I'm not discouraging it or encouraging it."

The maker of best sellers added, with a wink, "and you know I can encourage!"

Oprah, of course, has no shortage of famous admirers. Among those who donned black tie and gowns on a "Sopranos" night were Edie Falco, Katie Couric, David Bowie and Iman, Dustin Hoffman, Ron Howard, Sidney Poitier, Barbara Walters, Sydney Pollack and Martha Stewart.

Also there, at separate tables, were Oprah's longtime beau, Stedman Graham, and her best pal, Gayle King. The increasingly rare presence of Stedman with Oprah prompted even Ted Koppel to observe that he and his wife, Grace, just celebrated their 44th anniversary, but "Oprah and Steadman have been engaged for longer than that."

I'm amazed that she didn't have her father sign a confidentiality agreement

Oprah is a "mama's baby and a daddy's maybe" child. She has said that her mother was never certain whether Vernon Winfrey was actually "O"'s father for sure and Oprah won't take a DNA because she doesn't want to know any different. Maybe her "daddy" knows something we don't know and he ain't satisfied with the allowance he's getting from his "daughter." And that's the latest dirt from your pop culture vulture. zzzzzzzzzzz

This is so sad if it's really true. I hope Oprah's just trying to help her dad sell books which would be a slimy way to do it but it's awful to think somebody's dad can be so cruel.

LOL. Actually, The Pop Culture Vulture doubts whether this will be what the book is about because there seems to be genuine affection between "O" and Vernon, and telling what I mentioned would not expose anything that hasn't already been revealed, but - Oprah's parents were not married when she was born, and a question of paternity did come up...

I swear this is the first time that I ever heard about Oprah being a mommababy. I've had one of her earlier bios for years. It's called Oprah! by Robert Waldron and was published in the late 80s. Maybe I'll read it again - perhaps it was mentioned there and I forgot. And I never told you this before, but I am the proud owner of two signed Oprah books - Journey to Beloved and Make the Connection. I think that maybe I'm a closet Oprah fan :-)

I think that the fact that she was the product of an OOW birth speaks well for her--she has been a success plenty of products of two parent families could envy.

The children who come here out of wedlock are blameless--they are here and need all the love and respect any child can get--maybe more.

With the number of children who boast such parentage today--many in my own family--she needs to be commended and promoted as to what is possible.

No one blames Oprah for being born out of wedlock. It's her snooty, snobbish, judgmental attitude that I can't stand. And who the heck boasts about being a love child???

(What the hell can you do about it? Why not boast? What the hell did the LOVECHILD do?

You can't get your mind right. You can't figure out whether you want to be a ho or a nun.

Pick one or the other, baby.

We aren't discussing Winston Churchill and Alexander Hamilton, dimwit. This is the Oprah's dad is writing a tell all book thread. And just so we're clear - I can be a ho and/or a nun if I want to, since it's none of your business either way. Now, name someone who boasts about being born out of wedlock. You can't do it, can you? Were you born out of wedlock??? Are you happy that your father abandoned you??? Or was you're momma screwing the milk man??? Do you even know who your daddy is??? Answer me that. Jackass.

The "pop culture vulture" regrets to inform you that the book deal is dead. It's been reported that after another phone conversation with his daughter, Vernon stopped shopping the book idea around.

Thanks Culture Vulture. I forgot that Kitty Kelly is writing a book too.

And as usual Chris, you have a really bad case of being too uptight. It's no wonder you haven't had any you know what since you know when. Huh?

Damn, Chris and Mzuri got a thang going on don't they. I think I'll just goggle the two of them for the laughable insults.

Chris, what do you do to these women. I know you and Cyn-Cyn got a love hate thang but damn. What you be doing boy, got them women all upset at you. It appears as if you and Mzuri are even from the same state. Do you two ever see eye to eye on anything? It is however great reading, gives me a laugh and lord knows I can use a few.

BTW, I am a huge Oprah fan, not the show but the person. She's on my top ten list of all. How can anyone with any heart and sense of compasion not like this women. She has done more for more than some countries. I love me some Oprah simply because of that. Life aain't easy but Oprah has smoothed out some of the rough edges for thousands.....THOUSANDS. Being the big "O" ain't easy, I couldn't do her job.....I mean the job of being her.
