Funny how this prompted a post from you

quick fast and in a hurry.

Did you let out shrill squeals upon not making the list?

You make it soooo easy to attack you on your self-loathing negro mantra, chrishayden. When it comes to this issue, you are comparable to George Bush calling other people stupid.

Chris for some reason rap lyrics centers around negative things. Even the so called conscious rap focuses on the topics from your list. Who raps about the good things of life? Can you image someone Black rapping about how America is a great place to live?

It is like speaking proper English and being glad you live in America is being a sell out (this is a ghetto thing I don't expect everyone to understand).

Here is a list off the top of my head

Teenage pregnancies going down
HIV is no longer a death sentence
50% national homeownership
<5% Unemployment (for those looking)
The rebirth of Harlem
The World Wide Web, including AALBC.com ;-)
NYC, DC, Chi, ATL, LA, and the numerous other chocolate cities
Jazz, Funk and Gospel music
The Wire
Freedom to earn as much as your ability and drive can provide
A serious Black contender for the Presidency
Clean water and air
Ample food supply
Strong Financial markets
Free education
A legacy of accomplishment despite extreme hardship
Cynique, ABM, SIsg, Chrishayden, Mzuri, Serenasailor, yukio, NTFS and the rest of y'all
A high standard of living
Relative safety from foreign powers
The beaches, mountains, lakes, streams and general natural beauty
Freedom of movement
Black women
The diversions and variety of entertainment available
The diversity of people

Cynique:"You forgot to include your name on this list, chrishayden. Ooops, - sorry. I just noticed the "self-loathing negroes" LOL. I included Chris on my list though :-)

Can you image someone Black rapping about how America is a great place to live?

(Ah and here is where we get down to the nitty gritty. I suppose someone who is well off would rap about those things.

People who are well off do not go into show business. They own the recording companies. They don't rap (and get ripped off by them)

Or they become doctors, lawyers, etc.

Poor and desperate people get into show business. We do have rappers who have been to college but they didn't have no prospects else they wouldn't be rapping.

Now, do you think that the person who raps (who came from your blue collar and lower class neighborhood or your projects) is happy about those things you listed?

Do you think he enjoys a high standard of living or even gives a damn about relative safety from foreign powers (when he is not safe from other black people or the police or The Man) or beaches and mountains (whooee! You really lettin the booj wah stuff come through here) or Cynique or ABM?

No. This stuff turns you on. You don't rap. You don't listen to rap.

White kids listen to it--but quiet as its kept, lots of their situations are pretty grim, too, else they wouldn't be getting blown away over in Iraq.

And so it goes.

(smile) Of course I can not image a young Black man rapping about America's greatness. (Side bar: My daughter called me to the TV one day to show me a skit being performed on the Nick Cannon show. President Bush was doing a gansta rap with Condi shaking her rump. It was

Chris this actually sounds quite good. However there are many rappers who come from solid families with ample financial resources Ice Cube is one of the more popular ones that come to mind, there are of course others.

The biggest reason <i>I</> don't rap or listen to very much rap is; like the sagging pants, tattoos, piercings; I'm really too old for that stuff. I loved rap from it's start and will into my 20's but by the time I hot 40 I found most of the stuff boring. My kids like it; to them it is all news and fresh, to me it is tired.

Of course there are jams with break breaks, Bridges, hooks or whatever they are called and if I;m at a party it can move me like anyone else. But even in these cases I'm not listening to the lyrics.

Chris I think you've help me understand why the negative rap is so appealing. Teenagers are naturally more rebellious that a 40 year old man.

When I was in my 20's speeding down the highway, with beer in hand, no shirt or seatbelt on, and blasting "F--K the Police -- to me that was perfectly natural. Today I thank God for the police who put their lives on the line to protect mine.

So negative rap is generated by your rebellious kids, it is purchased by other normally rebellious other kids, record companies feed the flames and people get caught up in that mentality...

You know what is really a very sad sight. I 50 year old dude dressed like a 18 year old. Some men never grow up. They look to young people for their role models -- instead of the other way around...

What is really refreshing is when I meet a 20 year old who hasn't be caught up in the perpetual childishness of the hip-hop hype and are progression normally through life's stages and graceful productive adults.
