DNC Chair Says Blacks Will Lead 2008 Convention

WASHINGTON (NNPA) - Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said this week that the DNC has secured "one of the most diverse senior leadership teams" to head up the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC).
"We are excited about being in Denver for the 2008 convention, where in 17 months we will nominate the next President of the United States," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean in a release. "I am very proud to announce the members of our convention leadership team who, as a whole, are representative of the talent, experience and diversity that characterizes the Democratic Party."
The announcement of significant Black appointments comes after years of complaints that Democrats have taken Black voters for granted. Dean, chairman of the party for three years, and himself a former Democratic candidate for president, had promised to disprove that.
The new leadership team is headed by the Rev. Leah Daughtry who will serve as Chief Executive Officer of the 2008 Convention. Daughtry, currently the Chief of Staff at the DNC, is pastor of The House of the Lord Church in Washington, D.C.,
According to the statement, Daughtry will be joined by two other African-Americans. They are Cameron Moody who will serve as Deputy CEO of Operations. Moody oversaw the planning and implementation of security at the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee in Boston. In addition, Tina Akintayo, a 14-year hospitality professional, will joined the team as the Director of Housing.
