Yesterday I was listening to CCH Pounder on Fresh Air with Terry Gross (she sure is). CCH is that actress playing the female captain on "The Shield". She said for the first two years she was acting all she got was roles where she was crack whores selling her baby for crack and stuff. She decided she wasn't going to do it anymore. She was broke and gave in and told her agent to send her some more of those kind of scripts. He or she sent her the first script for LA Law. It had a role for a crack ho or something in it. But then she spied a part in there for a female judge. She read it and decided she wanted it. She had to fight her agent but finally the agent said that he or she would submit her for the part. The producers and writers said no way. She couldn't do it. She fought and fought and finally they said they would let her read for the part. That convinced them. Most telling was the comment of one of the writers sitting there. "Well. There ARE female black judges, aren't there?" This is what they have to fight. Before you want to slap her on the back and say that all the other black actors ought to do it, consider what hell she had to go through to do it and that she actually went broke. Most people would think that life is too short and gimme the ho parts. I know I would. | ||

I like CCH Pounder and I have alot of respect for her. Actually met her once. Very charming lady. I like how she plays a very classy woman in all of her movie roles. They aren't exactly model agency material. "She's lucky she got any parts at all." I have no idea what you are basing that on. Every role does not require Vanity cover looks. That is the problem with so much American Hollywood TV series and movies. I have noticed this trend as of late. There is a sad culture of casting young females (most are blonde) all under 30 years of age and under 130 lbs in roles of every single imaginable position. All the way from Secret Service team leaders to the most brilliant astrophysicist who is going to save the world from an oncoming meteorite. Same for the guys. They are all six feet tall and weigh under 180 lbs and very young. As I have said, I have noticed this typecasting (which does not even remotely reflect the real world). That is why I like English movies because they cast every day average looking people in their roles. Not these bullshit Hollywood cookie cutter clones. CCH Pounder is a talented actress and I do enjoy her role on the Shield (I love that program, along with the Sopranos and the Wire). She is a very believable character because of her looks and her demeanor. | ||
