On Becoming Don Imus: What Happens to Insults Unanswered?
by Angela Onwuachi

Racism in AmericaLike Essence Carson, the captain of the Rutgers women’s basketball team, I find it a close call whether to just ignore Don Imus’s comments. Unlike the students I referred to in my post about “ghetto fabulous” parties on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I have no hope that Don Imus will ever learn from his “mistakes” or change for the better. He is just pitiful, and no amount of education can change that fact.

I also appreciate Professor Darren Hutchinson’s wonderful point about how “we” construct racism. I understand how focusing on racist and sexist comments from idiots like Don Imus can be viewed as moving structural racism beyond remediation.

But then, my mind takes me back to those “ghetto fabulous” students at Tarleton State University, the University of Texas, the University of Connecticut, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Arizona, Villanova University, and the many other colleges identified by readers of blackprof.com in their comments. I consider the question posed during a news conference by Rutgers women’s basketball coach, Vivian Stringer: “Who amongst you could have heard these comments and not be upset?” I am saddened when I ponder two points. First, the answer to Stringer’s question for much of the American public is not clearly “Not I.” One poll indicated that only 25% of its subjects believed that Imus should be fired. According to one New York Times article, Rudy Giuliani, a presidential candidate, supports Imus; likewise, Senator and presidential candidate John McCain has backed Imus, noting that he, McCain, is “a great believer in redemption.” Second, the fact that so few Americans believe that Imus should be fired and that presidential candidates, who must certainly be concerned about public opinion, would support Imus indicates to me that the “Imus incident” is about more than just attitudinal racism. It is, in a way, structural. It is a symbol of the systemic practice of neighborhoods, the media, schools, and many other institutions in disregarding and downplaying insults about people of color and viewing us as “too sensitive” when we dare to complain. It is a sign of a society filled with institutions that will “accept” the apologies of “ghetto fabulous” students without taking full advantage of using the opportunity to really educate them before they become Don Imus, who again is far beyond saving. It is a view into a world in which public citizens wonder why Blacks cannot just accept Imus’s apology, even with his history of referring to journalist Gwen Ifill as a “cleaning lady” and journalist William Rhoden as a “quota hire.” These global practices systematically disadvantage people of color by allowing society to disregard the reality of racism in our lives; permitting far too many Whites to ignore their own racial privilege (including the way in which their white skin allows many of them not to think about race at all or see or feel its scars); and leaving us, people of color, to question all too often, “Are we crazy? Are we too sensitive? Should we just let it slide?” The fact is that Imus and his bosses who fail to fire him are part of the entire structure that support and encourage racial inequalities.

Gregory Lee, President of the National Association of Black Journalists, asserted the following about the “Imus incident”: “You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging comments. This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action . . . to educate him.” I agree, and I disagree. I agree that Imus’s apology means nothing given his history. I am also happy to see that Cal Ripken, Jr. canceled his appearance on the Imus Show and that some sponsors such as Staples, Procter & Gamble, and Bigelow Tea have take action by pulling their advertising from Imus’s show in response to his comments. But, it is not the education of Imus that I am concerned with. Watch Imus. He apologizes, deflects attention from his own comments by raising concerns about rappers’ use of misogynistic lyrics, and then claims that such actions by rappers do not excuse his behavior—all in one breath. He clearly has learned nothing.

But I am concerned with educating of the rest of us about the societal practices that enable the Don Imuses of the world to thrive and may work to turn “well-intentioned” ghetto-fabulous party throwers into Don Imuses—that is, if we choose not to educate them. Overall, I am hoping that the rest of us agree with team captain Essence Carson, who said, “At first we thought to let it slide, but . . . we decided it was unacceptable.”

I think the black-face college students should have been expelled. And I predict Giuliani and McCain will never be POTUS. I further predict that from this day forward, people are going to think twice before they utter any insult. And all the nappy-headed rappers should start singing the blues :-)

Hell, McCain and Giuliani are going to pick up TONS of votes for supporting Imus, that's why they did it, and ratings are why Imus used to do what he's done. She's naive if she thinks she needs to educate most whites "about the societal practices that enable the Don Imuses of the world to thrive".

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Public figures like influential broadcaster Don Imus increasingly pay a price for making racist remarks, but some experts say the focus on individual bigotry falls short of addressing deeper racial problems in the United States.

. . . .

The use of a slur by Imus, who insulted the Rutgers women's basketball team after it nearly won the U.S. collegiate championship, provoked intense anger because people could make a clear connection between the injustice done and the person causing the harm, said American University law professor Darren Hutchinson.

"You have a person you can identify as someone who is creating racial harm and that's a legitimate reaction," Hutchinson said. "But I do believe that over time if that's the only thing that gets this intense reaction, then we're reinforcing this notion that that's all that racism is."

"We never get at ... broader inequality like poverty. Why is poverty racialized? Why are people of color in schools that are underfunded? We never tackle those bigger issues."

Hutchinson said Lott's removal as majority leader was a good example of how debate over an individual's remarks failed to get at the deeper institutional issues of racism.

"He was condemned as the racist du jour and the Republicans were able to distance themselves from him and portray themselves as antiracist moderates, but no one really made the argument ... that as the Senate leader he was advancing the legislative agenda of the Republican Party," Hutchinson said.

He said the reaction to Imus similarly appeared to fall short of addressing the wider

issues, like why he remained on air for so long despite his record and why there continues to be a lack of diversity at large media institutions.

"Someone like Imus, because of this lack of diversity, they sort of have a license to go over the top," Hutchinson said. "The environment becomes permissive for him to say things like that."

IMO the bottom line is, this is really all about white privilege in this country. As long as white privilege exists, there will always be a fresh crop of Imus' who stand in line awaiting the opportunity to espouse thier racists views, opinions, comments, over the airways and other media and then try to hide behind a diaphonous cloud of finger pointing self righteousness.

After all, who wields the most power? A white man who has as his frequent guests men who hold some of the highest most powerful offices in the government--Senators, Congressmen, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES for pete's sake, Or the rappers whose lyrics would be largely ignored by whites if thier own children weren't so intent on buying it and playing it loudly from their homes and cars? Who has the most power to sway the opinion of the nation to adhere to their point of view? All the while claiming that it is a constitutional breech to sensor even the most blatant racist remarks.

White privilege transcends all else in this country along with the motto: TO THINE OWN(WHITE)SELF BE TRUE!

There can be no true end to racism in this country or any other until whites acknowledge the existance of and give up all rights to WHITE PRIVILEGE.

Yawn........Time to move on. Imus is history and the race hustlers are making a media killing on something that was made bigger than what it should have been. I watched the hustling race/political clowns on both sides exploit this incident to advance their own agendas. Let the man go and get over it.

What exactly is a "race hustler" NTFS? You are a part of white privilege so what the hell do you know? Like the rest of you, NTFS you think race is game to be played a card to be pulled out of some imaginary deck created by whites--so you blow it off--more priviliged thinking!!!!

It is about white privilege, but some rappers are their croonies. But, as I have tried to say elsewhere, its important not to equate the two.

One, because sexism among black people is not a black man problem it is a black man and woman problem.

Two, not all black men are blatant misogynist, and not all black women take offense to be called a ho, for a varied of reasons.

This means that from the ground up, we have to discuss this as a community and not black men v. black women.

Three, white privlege is not white people. In other words, it is not individuals, but whites as a power bloc as expressed through politics, economics, and cultural. And the privlege component is demonstrative on how in the majority of the cases, white individuals have more power than black individuals.

Why?

Because these white individuals have this support behind them that a black person, generally, doesn't have.

So what does this mean in the case of Imus?

It means he lost his job, but aint shit changed!

Well, I know it'll rankle you, Yukio, when I say that black people enjoy certain privileges, too, in that they are given a pass that takes the form of white guilt. There are things that blacks can get away with that whites can't. Like having things that are labelled as and limited to "black", such familiar examples as a "black" caucus, or a Miss "black" America contest, or a "black" student organization, a "black" authors conference or a "black" TV network and on and on. Plus, black comedians can talk about white folks in a way that whites wouldn't dare talk about blacks - with the exception of Michael Richards of course, whose career is now toast. And I really don't think that if a black talk show host called a white basketball girls team a bunch of "stringy-haired broads", that there would be this much of an uproar or that the host would be given anything more than a suspension. Yes, this all boils down to whites moreorless "humoring" blacks but it is still something that the average white person bristles about because they would be taken to task should they publically label things as exclusively "white". White privilege is, indeed, entrenched, but there are those whites who command more of it than others. So, of course, "class" and "rank" come into play also. These are things that figure into the growing schism in our society and it behooves black folks to consider what this might lead to. I know that being black does not lend itself to being objective but I like to play the devil's advocate sometimes.

White peope don't NEED to preface anything with the word "white" its already IMPLIED! Don't believe me? Go to any grocery store and pick up any cosmo, espquire, magazine and find a black face in the pages. Look at the prizes given in any mainstream contest--I'll bet they include a year's free tanning! Oh yeah, the word is inherent in almost all mainstream TV commercials. how many billboard ads do you see featuring blacks in mainstream advertising?? HELL turn on your tv for god's sake and find an african american TV show without having to have cable television? There hasn't been one on since Damon Wayans went off the air. How about News broadcasts How many people of color ANCHOR the news??? PUHLEEZE! Why do they need to designate the word white when it's in our faces EVERY DAMNED DAY!

cynique: What you mention is not what I would call "privileges": it would be better to say "concessions."

Part of the genius of power is to be in power and not know how you got it and, more importantly, not know that you have even though through your expectations, mores, and actions, you--white people--express their power each and everyday.

White people are so powerful that they don't need an ethnic identifier [african american, hispanic, latino, asian] in front of their organizations.

They are universal/normal/mainstream....

we are particular/pathological/ and a subculture...

When I was a camp counselor a long time ago, one of my white "colleagues" says, "why are there black schools anyway?" And I laughed...I told him that black people weren't allowed in white schools, and that instead of putting white in front on the schools, they lynched us, imprisoned us, charged us exorbitant poll taxes, etc...and he said,"... but that doesn't happen now."

I said, are you sure? And then I talked about police brutality in the South and the North; I talked about the unequal distribution of funds in schools; and then I finally told him that the majority of black people never wanted integration, anyways...."But he said Martin Luther King said..." and I said, I know what he said. But thats one man. I said that the majority of black people wanted desegregation, and then....lunch was over....

there is my anecdote....

I understand where you are coming from, Yukio. White people are the ones who don't get it. Here's my anecdote. As I frequently mention, I worked at the post office for years, and in the sphere of that ubiquitous culture, black folks ran it. And if you think the white folks laboring there, smarting under the authority of black overseers were luxuriating in their privileged status you need to think again. And quitting and finding another job wasn't necessarily a privileged alternative for these white "peons" because, for unskilled laborers, the post office offered a lot of good benefits including a competitive salary. These are the kind of situations disgruntled unsophisticated white people are affected by, along with the advantages of the tokenism that benefits blacks. Moreover, black folks are eager to cite the statistics about more whites being on welfare than blacks, quick to look down on white trailer park trash while at the same time chiding the affluent black middle-class. So the lines of privilege, though there, are often blurred. But buzz words like "white privilege" and "institionalized racism" make for good sound bites. LOL. Whatever. What can be said with certainty is that whites have no excuse for failing; but fail they do. And in the future what so many people are starting to predict just might be true about class usurpring race because the day may be close at hand when money can buy a chunk of privilege.

My reference to "white privilege" got a "buzz" out of you, didn't it, a_woman? LMAO. And you also seem to be stung by anybody who doesn't share you attitude about race, a no-no which drives you to accuse them of being "white".

Unlike you, a-woman, I have acknowledged that I hang out at this site daily by choice because what goes on here is interesting and stimulating and entertaining. Taking life easy is what I worked 30 years for so I could lounge around and enjoy my retirement by doing as I please. Whereas you and your "young" self try to pretend that you have better things to do when we know you've never stopped lurking, still loitering around, pining for the "gooood old days". boo-hoo. And I hope you are not so misguided as to think that you are the first person to invoke the familiar old "white privilege" argument. Go stand in the corner for being a naughty little girl. snicker.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWN!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA. TSK TSK poor old Cynique, you can't help but BLEED GREEN all over this board every time you think about MY WRITING CAREER!! Time, which unlike you and your cohort, I've got PLENTY of! HA! Time will reveal who is pretending (what they've got left of) their life away and who (little old me) ISN'T!

and PINING is what you do best, poor old dear, for and audience, and pining for your youth, which is why you have lied about you're age from the time you landed on this board. "cyber flirting with LAMBD and pretending to be in your thirties, then pretending you were in your fifties, and just the other day, "admitting" you were in your seventies trying to emulate the elegantly dignified MISS SESE????AHAHAAHAH!

You're so full of yourself you ought to vomit everytime you look in the mirror! And you have the NERVE to accuse other posters of lying!! Regardless of your reasons, dearheart, it really is UNHEALTHY for you to sit at your computer staring at the screen all these hours. Really dear, why not find yourself some REAL friends and get out and smell the roses once in a while, while there's still time! HA! Better yet, why
don't you go work on your little "book" that you and your little new "sidekick" are so CONVINCED you could write and that you DESPERATELY wish for...AHAHAHAHAHHAHAH! AS IF......

Toodles grannies!! I've got (pretend) HA! deadlines to (not??) meet HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!! Bye now and by all means EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT!

Gee Whiz! Writing a rant in the middle of the night? Sounds like a-woman's really got it in for me. Ya think? heh-heh. What would you do if you couldn't play the "age" card, a-woman, something I have enabled you to do because I first gave the year I was born a looong time ago when I shared my life story in an essay I posted on this site. That's how Ce-Ce knew I was her contemporary. And your petty little attempt to further expose me was also facilitated by the fact that I've previously joked on this board about that tired old "gossip" you call yourself "revealing". Woooooo. I really have nothing to hide. And does anybody care how old I am? I don't care how old you are, or do I care one way or another about your fledgling career. Why would I? It doesn't have any effect on my life. You are sooo transparent, so silly; it's quite obvious that you have a need to believe that I envy you. That's why you constantly resort to bragging about yourself, - why your frustration drives you to create childish little scenarios that cast you as a star. Talk about somebody being full of herself. snicker. And if I was seriously interested in pursuing a writing career, I wouldn't have nixed the suggestions that I compile my posts into a book. I know it's hard for you to swallow because your tongue gets in the way, but at this stage in my life, I'm perfectly content to read books rather than write them. BTW, I ain't NEVER claimed to be in my 30s. LMAO.

I don't know what the two of you have going on but I always wonder about boardies who claim that other boardies spend too much time on their computers and that the other person is a loser who needs to get a life. Duh!!! Ain't your ass spending time posting to a forum? Aren't you an internet junkie too? And how do you know the habits of another poster. How can you tell whether their ass is glued to their chair, and they eat and sleep at their computer terminal, or whether they are moving around doing other things and posting between working on other projects as a diversion?

You're absolutely right, Mzuri. And it amuses me that clueless folks have such a problem when others choose to enjoy the peace and quiet and comfort of their private digs after years of dealing with kids and marriage and co-workers and the rat-race??? It's ridiculous to declare that it's "unhealthy" to use a computer to take advantage of having the world and a wealth of information at your finger tips, especially since what is also at your fingers tips is a door knob to turn in order to admit your visiting family members, or a set of keys to a car that drives you to the mall or the supermarket or the library or to community functions. Of course this never occurs to people who make assumptions.

YES my ass posts but not NEARLY as much as you and your buddy MZURI, so I think the number of posts speak for themselves QUITE LOUDLY! HA! And Mzuri at the rate you're posting...more than half of that of your buddy cynique ALREADY and you've just been posting a little over a year! At the rate you're posting, you will surpass your buddy with time spent sitting on this board, by far! HAHAHAHAHAHAA, I know I know, you're much much too busy with your "career" to be sitting on a board all day! HAHAHAHAHA! BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!

Wrong dingaling. I sit at my computer terminal because I operate an e-commerce business. I post to this forum as a diversion while I'm not doing the fifteen-thousand other things that I have going on. And in case you didn't know, I retired from federal govt to work my business full-time. So take your tired little dickbrained ass on somewhere, and keep tabs on something that matters. Like how many dimwits are gonna read your book. HA!
