Immigrants Top U.S. Blacks for College Spots
At Elite Schools, Proportion From Africa, Caribbean Nearly Doubles That of U.S. Population

Camille Charles
Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Pennsylvania
Tuesday, March 6, 2007; 3:00 PM

While immigrants make up 13 percent of college-aged blacks in the U.S., a recent study has found that they are nearly a quarter of blacks at the nation's most prestigious colleges -- and economic disadvantages and negative perceptions about African-Americans are suggested as possible causes.

One of the study's authors, Associate Professor Camille Charles of the University of Pennsylvania, will be online Tuesday, March 6 at 3 p.m. ET to take questions and comments from readers.

i did hear the talk show, where the complaints was that africans where taking spots from black americans, and the universities where fine with that because they considered it diversity, and they where installing african/black people in their system.

This is something I've seen coming for a long time. If you look at engineering, or computer science the disparity is even more staggering.

The competition is increasingly global and as a result even more challenging. We need to wake up.

Cynique, as you know, diversity includes everything other than a white, heterosexual male. Look out for more complaints from white men as they become more and more marginalized.

"Look out for more complaints from white men as they become more and more marginalized."

Good point Troy. The crescendo of discontent and anger will only get louder from paranoid white males. If you have noticed, white men have been fighting back against affirmative action thanks to grass root efforts of hard line white paleoconservatives (growing strong among young white college students) and eager to please Negroes like Ward Connerly.

Yes, white men have complained about being picked upon and villified and discriminated against as much as black men. And they have the muscle to implement their grievances.

troy:

not exactly. part of it is competition, and the other part is that Africans are less likely to be political conscious of race relations, and therefore more docile when it comes to racial matters.

it is not unusual for Africans to be unware of or unfamilar with african american history, and therefore, they tend not to look at things through a 'racial' lens the way an african american would. Also, as Troy says diversity means 'everything' other than white...and if schools or employers want to promulgate diversity, and this is always to their benefit, they can do so by hiring Africans or giving scholarships to Africans who will just do their jobs; but if they encounter racism, they may not know how to define it as such or they may just accept it, or quit. Whereas, african americans will do their jobs, and if something isn't right, they will often do as Africans BUT they may go further, and bring legal attention against the business or school. Of course, this is NOT always the case, but it is often the case.

while 'diversity' is an ambiguous term, the political intension of these policies was to attract competent blacks and 'latinos' of the United States. this is also happen among the puerto ricans who are being displaced by S.Americans and those from Latin America. Again, these groups are unfamilar w/PR's history in the U.S.; and in some cases, are indeed, antagonistic to Puerto Ricans, and vice versa....

in fact, in the case of africans at colleges and universities; i have seen cases where some africans obtained scholarships that historically went to african americans, and many of these africans could BARELY writeote or speak english....

Good point Yukio. I was just curious as to what your response would be. I agree.

i'm african american, and I can barely write or speak english...
