Funny how you can call foks White, Black and Brown. But Red and Yellow are seldom used to describe Native Americans and Asians, these days.

Also, it's interesting how it's acceptable to call a man a dog yet quiet un-PC to call a woman a b*tch when the later is just a more gender specific synonym for the former.

Certainly a very interesting article to someone like me, Yvette, who has always been into lexicography. And this is the first time I've heard about the emergence of the gender neutral word "hir" and I rejoice! I've always been vexed about having to use a collective noun because I didn't want to use the impersonal "he". But now I can use the all-inclusive "hir". And I do have a problem when people refer to a mixed company group as you "guys". Side bar: back when the term "oreo" first came out, I was very amused when told by a Native American that their equivalent of oreo was "apple" because these were people who were red on the outside and white on the inside. He added further that the Mexican equivalent of this type was "coconut" because they are brown on the outside and white on the inside. But I think these terms may have fallen along the wayside just as "oreo" seems to have done.

"Also, it's interesting how it's acceptable to call a man a dog yet quiet un-PC to call a woman a b*tch when the later is just a more gender specific synonym for the former."

I've always despised political correctness. it's worse than the ills is was supposedly created to address. And yes, my rabid anti-PC rants and behavior has (and still does) gotten me into constant trouble. Ya gotta stand up for what you believe....what can I say?

And as far as the "b" word is concerned, it's just like Negroes and the "n" word. It's ok for me but not for thee! Women screech and howl when men use the word but when they use it....well, that's different. On two separate occasions just recently, the word came out of my mouth and I was almost physically assaulted for using it. But those same two women were describing an intense conflict they were having with another female and the only word they kept using was the "b" word to vent their anger at their nemesis. When I asked them why it was ok for them to gratuitously use the word but not me (or any other man for that matter), they just grinned and said, "...because......it's different. I'm a woman!" End of subject......

I call men es all the time. And pussies and whatever else. Why are those words gender specific anyway? What rule is that?

It used to be that the reason calling a man a b i t c h was such a low blow was because doing so reflected on his manhood since bi t c h is what a female dog is called. This is also the reason why it was the ultimate insult to call a woman a b i t c h. Now, I don't think calling men by that name cuts that deep any more and women are called b i t c h without batting an eye. Thank you, hip-hop culture

"Now, I don't think calling men by that name cuts that deep any more..."

Naw, it still cuts -real deep! The three top insults for a male (no special order), is calling him a bytch, a faggot (accusing him or being gay when he is not) or mocking his sexual deficiencies (both physical hardware and performance). Everything else comes after those three. Why? because they cut to the core of a his manhood. Now you know...

i have to disagree dude, there is and always be a place and time to be pc. if you over do it then it becomes annoying. but being p.c. in my opinion is a way of showing a little class to something that may be a sensitive area for some people. if everyone said exactly what was on their mind all the time then i think the murder rate, divorce rate, and riots would increase ten fold.

I don't really like this newspaper but the Daily Mail, and also the Sun, are the most anti-PC paper's in the UK. Thought this article would be relevant.

Dobes,

One of the problems with Political Correctness is all the duplicity, uncertainty and even hypocrisy that often imbued within the WHAT/WHY of what are/aren't appropriate.

For example, a Black comedian could probably get away with joking about Irish Americans being drunks. But an Irish American comedian could NOT get away with calling Black foks thugs or gangbangers.

And I also think at some point imposing restrictions upon what others can say, no matter how well-meaning, restricts healthy, fruitful and NECESSARY discourse on MANY very important issues.

"Uh huh. No wonder you got bentoutofshape when I told you about your shriveledupdick."

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Nice try. But no. You were just factually inaccurate. It would be the same as me accusing you of being an Eskimo. That particular cheap shot (shriveledupdick) had nothing to do with the male ego. And if you recall, I laughed at you. There was no getting "bentoutofshape". It was a silly dig but I actually thought it was funny. Got it!?

Bro, you are 100% correct. My best friend and I have discussed this rigidly enforced "PC double standard" a thousand times. It's pathetic.

"And I also think at some point imposing restrictions upon what others can say, no matter how well-meaning, restricts healthy, fruitful and NECESSARY discourse on MANY very important issues."

I totally agree.
