There will be a 2-hour film on NOVA, the PBS Science series; it will
air February 6th 8:00pm for Black History Month. It is
called "Forgotten Genius," a documentary biography of Percy Julian, the
pioneering black chemist, entrepreneur, civil rights champion and
educator.

Mr. Julian best known in scientific circles for his work synthesizing
steroids from plants, and did much of his groundbreaking synthesis at a
paint factory!

The prelim website is at <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/julian/>

Please pass this info along to as many people as you can. NOVA has been
on the air for 30 years and they've never had a film about a black
scientist or about chemistry.

This is a great start but I hope the PBS people know that there are a whole bunch of Black geniuses in present day and in the past.

True, Mzuri. But to be honest, I think PBS does one of the best jobs of any channel in showcasing documentary films by African American film makers and about African American topics.

Thanks for posting this, LiLi!

"True, Mzuri. But to be honest, I think PBS does one of the best jobs of any channel in showcasing documentary films by African American film makers and about African American topics."

This is very true Yvettp. They are the only channel that has consistently over the years produced documentaries and programming depicting black history and individual biographies. Everything from a biography about Jack Johnson to the monumental "Eyes on The Prize" series (awesome!). They also have an interesting video library that you should take time to look at on their web site. No other channels have produced anything on the level of serious documentation of black life in America other than PBS. Most channels are too absorbed with black comedies or blacks as actors in written for TV series. But PBS is all about educational and informative programming about black history and related subjects. I love it!

I know y'all get tired of me citing my connections to noteworthy people but Dr. Percy Julian lived in my home town for a time during the late 1940s before moving to neighboring Oak Park, Illinois, an upscale all-white suburb where he was met with racial resistance until prominent citizens there banded together and stood up for him. Julian served as an officer of our local NAACP as well as president of our grade school's PTA during the time I was a pupil there.

I never get tired of your stories Cynique. Besides, we're all connected - there's only six degrees of separation between everybody.

Cynique neat story!

NTFS: I will mention http://www.pbs.org/wnet/aaworld/ in my next newsletter.

Yvettep: I agree completely (I think this is the third time today I wrote that). In fact I just posted a PBS special about Billy Strayhorn. Looks like I'll be in front of the boob tube tonight.

Never, Cynique. In fact I wish you'd write it all down for us (and the rest of the world...)

I finally watched this. It was WONDERFUL! Both from the standpoint of educating about the man and the times and for a nice primer on organic chemistry. (I hadn't thought that hard about carbon rings since 11th grade LOL!)

And Cynique--I must have seen your neighborhood when they showed him and his family before they moved to O.P.--cooooool!

Yep, Dr. Percy Julian lived a couple of blocks over from where I lived. Oak Park always likes to claim him but we always chime in and remind that when he first came to Chicago, he lived in our suburb first!
