Man pleads not guilty in 1964 race case

JACKSON, Miss. Ñ A reputed Ku Klux Klansman accused in the 1964 slayings of two black men pleaded not guilty Thursday, and in a measure of how things have changed across the South, the judge he stood before was a black woman.
With his wrists and ankles shackled, 71-year-old James Ford Seale repeatedly addressed the judge as "ma'am," a social courtesy whites typically denied to blacks in Mississippi 43 years ago.
Seale was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of kidnapping and conspiracy. Prosecutors said Charles Eddie Moore and Henry Hezekiah Dee, both 19, were seized and beaten by Klansmen, then thrown into the Mississippi River to drown.
A second white man long suspected in the attack, reputed KKK member Charles Marcus Edwards, 72, has not been charged. People close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity said Edwards was cooperating with authorities.
Seale and Edwards were arrested in the case in 1964. But the FBI, consumed by the search for three civil rights workers who had disappeared that same summer, turned the case over to local authorities, who promptly threw out all charges.
The U.S. Justice Department reopened the case in 2000. But it was not until a few years ago that authorities even realized Seale was still alive.
"Forty years ago, the system failed," FBI Director Robert Mueller said in Washington. "We in the FBI have a responsibility to investigate these cold-case, civil rights-era murders where evidence still exists to bring both closure and justice to these cases that for many, remain unhealed wounds to this day."
On Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Linda R. Anderson asked Seale whether he understood the charges, which carry up to life in prison.
"Yes, ma'am, I think so," Seale said in a calm voice.
Seale was jailed for a bail hearing on Monday. His court-appointed attorneys said he is suffering from cancer. His trial is scheduled for April 2.

Big whoop! This sc-mbag is now a senior citizen, 'bout to curl up and drop dead ANYWAY. Now, 43 years too late, they finally arraign him and Black folx are supposed to jump up and down and call it "justice." Please.
The system didn't fail. The system did exactly what it planned on doing all along - let these KKK muthahs live out their lives as they please, then when they have practically no life left to live, we'll arrest them, and throw the nig-gers a bone. Case solved. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Seale has terminal cancer. |

I could care less if he was about to celebrate his 100th birthday. I hope the bastard dies in prison. There is no statue of limitations for murder. I have quite a collection of books and documentation about the history of racism and the oppression of blacks in the South. Although by nature I am a very easy going person, after years and years of reading and researching, it still emotionally bothers and visibly unnerves me when I read about the senseless brutality, the humiliating forced segregation and senesless violence blacks labored under in the South. For those Negroes who have a cavalier or indifferent understanding about the racism and extreme violence that blacks endured -it was worse than anything you currently believe!!.
I have no sympathy whatsoever for this broke down emaciated white racist. I could care less what his current physical health is like or how old he is. Back in the day of the brazen Southern white power culture and state enforced laws, James Seale, along with the White Citizens Counsel, the Klu Klux Klan and your generic Confederate flag waving white racist goobers, showed blacks no mercy and never passed up the opportunity to properly discipline and punish any "uppity nigge.r" or sympathetic white "nigge.r lover" who attempted to defy white Southern race traditions. They did not and would not tolerate any disrespect or open challenging of their Jim Crow culture. The retribution for any infractions was swift and merciless. But that particular time has passed. So this steely soldier and defender of Southern white culture must finally pay for the brutal torture and murder of two young black men. Read this: FUC.K THAT MURDEROUS RACIST CRACKER! E'nuff said....

The purpose of this country's legal and penal systems is to ensure that justice is served. There's no statute of limitations on kidnapping either. So? PHUCK A STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS. This case remained DELIBERATELY unsolved for a near half-century. Just like the Medgar Evers and Emmett Till cases. No justice has been served. These bastards got away with murder, plain and simple - assisted by this country's racist legal system. Score (another) one for the KKK. |

You must be correct in your assessment U.S. because I was wondering exactly that when I heard about the arrest in this case. Why does law enforcement wait until the perps have one foot in the grave before they bring charges. It's not as if the authorities just now discovered some new evidence.
God bless the victim's brother for persevering all these years, most people would have thrown in the towel long ago.

And eye-witness to the murder, says he didn't want to die with the blood of those young men on his hands. Did he just now come forth?? Is he the one who is not being arrested?? At least the brother of one of the victims, who would not let the case die, now has closure. |
