I don't know what the rest
of your families are like...but
I grew up (adopted) by a family
FULL of Black American Women
(and men) from the SOUTH.

We have cornbread yellow, light
custard and a few who could pass
for White.

The majority are DEEP CHESTNUT BROWN.

My Nana Glodine from North Carolina
could have passed for a West African
woman from GHANA.

We used to have "blue black" women
but they all were very, very old when
I arrived in America and they died off
when I was a kid.

ANYWAY......since everybody's so upset
that an African woman like me has the
gall to reject Kathleen Cleaver as a "black"
woman....and want to BLAME AFRICA and "those
immigrants
"....let me explain something to
you.

THE BLACK AMERICAN WOMEN....IN "MY FAMILY"

---never could stand Kathleen Cleaver.

They sucked their teeth and rolled their
eyes when she was shown or mentioned, because
to them---"she ain't no damn black woman", as
they always used to complain when I was a child.

"WHy they got her white ass sitt'n up there
talk'n for us?"

"Cause she damn near white--dess why."

THEN AT CHURCH ON SUNDAY---when we ran into
the occasional "white-looking" black lady, the
Black American women in my family were sweet,
cordial and accepting---but in truth---they
resented those women for being HELD UP in our
community as some great bastion of "black womanhood" and "black beauty"---when they
weren't even black.

I GREW UP HEARING IT---and of course because
I'm Sudanese, I totally understood their anger
at being so thoroughly disrespected and devalued,
because I surely had not been raised in Africa
to refer to a woman who looks like "Halle Berry"
as "black". In Africa--they would kill you,
and in countries like Tanzania---they would not
even register Halle Berry as "mixed", she would
called "WHITE LADY" by people in the streets.

Those people are "Half-Castes", because the BLOOD
of an outside "race" SHOWS ITSELF in them.

And that whas in Africa.

But the BLACK AMERICAN WOMEN in "MY FAMILY"
---they always supported Halle Berry, they
supported Lena Horne, they supported the High
Yellow "Feminist/Scholars" from schools like
SPELMAN who were always on t.v. claiming to speak as "the black woman"---but though the women
in my family SUPPORTED these women---there was ALWAYS resentment.

And they never felt Represented.

My Grandmother and my Mother and my sisters
and my Cousins----they never felt like they
were being represented when these White-looking
women sat up and claimed to be speaking for
Black women.

NOTICE THESE WOMEN NEVER---never ever---RAISED
THE ISSUE OF COLORISM AND THE TREATMENT OF
THE DARKEST BLACK WOMEN.

Halle Berry sat her ass up on OPRAH and said
that she will fight down anyone who claims that
"dark black women" are treated worse than she
is for being "biracial"----yet it's HER who gets
to sit up and LIVE OFF their identity.

Ditto Kathleen Cleaver and so many other of
that YOKE.

Yet in still, these LIGHT BRITE WOMEN have
the nerve to be be angry because REAL BLACK WOMEN don't want to be mis-represented and made invisible anymore???

The WOMEN IN MY FAMILY---were BLACK AMERICANS.

And they were not Bitter
They weren't without men
They weren't racist and evil

...they were simply human beings, women, who
were NOT ALLOWED to represent their own
image.

They detest women like Danzy Senna who
tries to claim that SHE is a black woman,
because deep inside---there's a DISRESPECT
being dolled out.

If you offer them a choice between Mariah
Careys CD and Lauryn Hill's----they don't ask
to LISTEN first---they take LAURYN because
she's "black", "rare", "beautiful"--she's US.

Whitney Houston can crack every note in heaven
mess'n up a song--but they will swear out that
WHITNEY just sung Mariah's "white ass" under the table.

There's resentment.

If they can choose their favorite actress
--Halle Berry and Lonette Mckee don't stand a
chance against Angela Bassett, Jayne kennedy
and Alfre Woodard.

ALL THE MEN.....ALL THE MEN

ALL THE MEN IN MY FAMILY

are "dark skinned" (I'm not counting adopted
members).

MY "BROWN" BLACK AMERICAN MOTHER WHO
LOOKS LIKE CYNIQUE ONLY BETTER because she's
nice and BROWN...she married a Dark skinned
man---my adoptive dad---who was a 60's activist
for Civil Rights and LOVES black women.

My dad is Chocolate.

My Nana's Husband was JET BLACK.

My Aunts who married did so with a DARK MEN.

My other Aunts who bring "boyfriends" to
family events or I used to see them in a
car with a man----it was ALWAYS a "Dark Man".

SO DON'T BLAME MY ATTITUDE ON "those Africans",

Because a lot of what I feel and believe is
also FELT by BLACK AMERICAN FAMILIES----the
kind who are actually Black colored.

Increasingly, the AUTHENTIC BLACKS in this
country---meaning the ones with BROWN SKIN,
"nappy hair" and African facial features
----can see that they're being replaced by
another "race"----as Walter Mosley calls it,
"a new race"---people who are YELLOW and MIXED
and whose off spring LOOK WHITE and whose
whole image only "HINTS AT" being black.

They are NEUTRAL "race-wise"...and it's
totally understandable that this will begin
to be seen as a THREAT to the very existence
of Black People and that many Black People
will now find it necessary to do what they
should have done and WOULD HAVE DONE from the
very beginning if they hadn't been slaves---
and that is to create a "STANDARD" for what
is BLACK.

And there is NO WAY to do that without
looking first over ones shoulder back to the
"motherland"---to Africa.

No such "assignation" could be made without
it being blessed by the NATURAL HOME of the
Black People. And somewhere under the skin...
Black Americans know that.

So don't hate KOLA for bringing you
what time it is.

I love that artical KB. My father is a high-yellow mixed looking man. And so is his family. However, my mother is a dark, West African looking woman. I always considered myself Black. However, I can understand the pain of women like Whoopi Goldberg, Fantasia's, Nia Longs, and my girl Gabrielle Union. When they have to look at women like Beyonce, Halle, Mariah, and Alicia Keyes to represent them. And these women get to call themselves Black but they are not. They show no hints of African features.

When will you think this will end?? When will "authentic Blacks" get to form there own communities?

What shade are you, Serenasailor? Do you apply the standards you use to put others down to your ownself? I'm beginning to think that you are a role player; somebody who agitates in an effort to portray those who oppose you as being colorist villains.

The next time you are in Africa Don't Go to South Africa.
You just might have a stroke or seizure.
From what I hear the the dark skinned Blacks and Light skinned colored's are working Together to get rid of the Whites.
There is a seperate category for mixed race people in South Africa.
Still a lot of dark skinned blacks over there
have no problem getting along with a "Colored"
which is what a mixed race person is called over there

So keep on hating Kola.
Not all Africans think the Same way you do.
My Nigerian Boss is married to a very light skinned Latina woman.
Last time I checked Nigeria is still located
in West Africa, yet a lot of the guys I work with
from Nigeria are Very much attracted to white women.
Many of them perfer light skinned women

I bet a lot of Africans don't even know who you are.
Sleeping wth Bin Laden is your only claim to fame
Your 15 minutes are up.

Aw, blah, blah, blah, Kola Boof. The light-skinned women in my family, as well as those in the families of all my friends, always raised our fists, and said "Right On, Kathleen. We know you've got something to prove and you're doin it. We're glad a miltant b i t c h like you is on our side." We're the authentic ones, Kola Boof, not you and your half-breed Sudanese self who just happened to have landed in this country by default.

Oh Boy, look at how the slavemasters little half white chilluns come out to speak on his behalf!! You guys are on the wrong message board. You guys should be on Stormfront, or American Renaissance.

And Eastwest I doubt the Coloured South Africans are working with Africans to "erase white ppl". They are more than likely working to erase Black ppl. Just like you want to erase Black ppl. And please take yo Black woman hatin ass somewhere else. You are not wanted here!!

kola boof, those black american people who you were (allegedly) raised by and around were NOT your family.

you REAL family abandoned you.

you can talk, and talk, and talk untill you are blue in the face.

but you nor ANYONE else are going to make females who look like halle berry or vannessa williams go away or be looked at as ANYTHING other than black women.

so keep CRYING about the same old boring issue.

you cannot do anything to change this reality.

its AMAZING that some AFRICAN, from some far off land, is actually speaking like she is some kind of authority on our people.

kola, why don't you go to a forum for the SUDANESE?

im sure your SUDANESE brothers and sisters could use your "wisdom".

No Cynique but you do. Him and his "white wife". Which I am sure you love and adore. Because just like your white slavemaster you love all Blacks that you find 'non-threatening". From the ones that look like Clarence Thomas to Vanessa Williams. As long as they are "non-threatening".

You hate Kola because she goes against everything that your slavemaster taught you. And just like any "niggerish American Black" you will kill anyone your slavemaster deems "threatening". Or anyone who he thinks is going to put the wrong ideas in his slaves head.

And Lil_Brain no one is talking about "erasing" Vanessa Williams and Halle Berry you IDIOT!! We are saying give these ppl there own ethnic group. They are not Black they are mixed. And if they were in any other country they would not be considered "Black" but "Mixed".

Take South Africa for instance. Experts say that South Africa was the most racist country in the world. Which is "laughable" to me they don't even closely compare to the U.S. However, even in South Africa the white man made a way for his illegitamite Black offspring by calling them "Coloured" he gave them more priviledges than the rest of the Black population. Which was unthinkable in this country.

Only in a cruel and racist country would force ppl of mixed heritage and Black African heritage to identify as the same. Like KB said your slavemaster lied and you "ate it all up".

And you love kola because she makes you feel that all that crap you grunt out doesn't stink, serenasailor. Ewu. You try to put people in little boxes so you don't have to confront reality. I am not obsessed with white people like you and I am not color-conscious like you. I relate to anyone no matter what shade their skin is as long as they have intelligence and integrity and a goddamned sense of humor, traits that a droning sulking gloomy gus like you are sorely lacking in. You're like a broken record, a somebody who doesn't seem to realize that nowadays people listen to CDs or Ipods unless of course they are hopelessly stuck in a scratchy kola boof groove like you and your sorry self are.

I read what Kola writes and some things she says make sense but I'm still westernized, lol and I cannot think of Halle or Vanessa any other way except for black women.

I do have a question though. What would dictate this new ethnic group? Would it be if they were biracial? The skintone? The hair? What if they were mixed with kinky hair, pug nose and full lips? What if they were brownskinned with angular, nordic facial features? I'm still not getting what would be the rules on who is black and who is not and who would decide this? The person themselves or some sort of checklist?

BTW, Mzuri, that emoticon is cute; mind if I steal it?

They both look mixed to me but I see what you're saying. Halle looks Black/Native American to me.

"do have a question though. What would dictate this new ethnic group? Would it be if they were biracial? The skintone? The hair? What if they were mixed with kinky hair, pug nose and full lips?"

Anyway, whatever dictates any racial group, it sure as hell isn't Kola. See - I don't have a problem with any race, mixed person or anyone. (Except for white people who think they are superior to Black people but that's another subject.)

If another human being has a Black parent and they want to proclaim themselves as a Black person, or if they want to claim Blackness or whatever - I gives an ish. Fine. Whatever.

If some atavism has reared its head and another human being with two Black parents comes out light, bright and almost (looking) white, what do I care. Who am I to say that person isn't Black???

What bothers me about the Kola rants is that she professes to be authentic (because she thinks she looks authentic) but she's really mixed. And then she has the nerves to tell other people (me and others) whom she has never seen and doesn't know anything about - that they are cree-hole mulattos and all that other nonsense she spews. Besides the fact that she doesn't know what she's talking about, HTF do you put down a group of people (mulattos) when you are one your own self?

The other thing that bothers me about Kola is that she claims that she is the "MOTHER" of the pure race, the "MOTHER" of African Americans, and that she knows what millions of Africans think about mixed people, what they think about Black African Americans and on and on.

She supposedly can't even take her butt back to Sudan because the government wants her dead, but she knows what the people there think about her.

How can she possibly know how she is perceived by others? It's bad enough she thinks she looks like Pam Grier with that afro wig. That right there should be an indicator that Kola is delusional.

Plus she's a L-I-A-R. Lies about everything. She lies to others and she lies to herself.

She shouldn't be given any credence. NONE!!!

BB123: I never thought of Tisha Campbell as pretty or attractive but I do see her as a black woman. Chilli, I also see as a black woman...a pretty one.

Mzuri: I see what you are saying and I know you have been posting here way longer than me. I just think that maybe Kola's views are so different from ours because of her African hertitage. I also agree if a person is mixed (with black) and wants to be labeled as black then more power to them BUT we are westernized. We can do that HERE in the States but what about other regions? Now do I agree with all that she deems non-black be labeled as such? No but maybe where she's from, that is the way it is.

A person would KILL you if you label them black but they don't want to be over there? WTF? I can't imagine something like that but I believe it. I was just reading (I think it was LiLi) an article on the Dalits of India or "the untouchables" and it's sad. Their caste system is horrible, just like AFrican and here so I know there is something horrible about being black (the skintone) to most of these folks.

Again, I see what you're saying and no, Kola is not the authority on who is what but I'm just trying to see things from her point of view.

Now let me git mah black butt off this fence, justa teetering, lol..it's chaffing my crotch. hehehe.

Kola you can't discuss such

Girlfriend, if you are trying to see things from Kola's point of view, be prepared to be confused. I don't delve into her rants because of time limitations (I'm working on other projects between my posts) but it seems that her views fluctuate depending upon from whence the wind blows or what day of the week it is.

As to what is thought of us in other regions - unless I plan to visit or reside there, I personally don't give an ish. If the Africans don't accept Black Americans because we've been "watered down" why should we sit up here and commiserate about it. They are the ones that are starving, dehydrated, dying of AIDS. It has no impact upon me whatsoever.

And just because I've been posting here longer than you doesn't give me any further insights. Just that I've been cussed out by that trifling ass Kola more often than you and I'm probably sicker of the than you are. LOLOLOL!!!

Kola, that email was harsh, lol but that is my point.

FOR ME and I can only speak FOR ME, people like Halle, Vanessa, etc. who indentify culturally with being black and claim to be black ARE black to me. Of course I am westernized and I have no concept of what it's like in North/northeastern Africa and that is why I read what YOU are saying from your point of view. I have no way of knowing of what you say is true of false BUT I have read for YEARS how folks all over the world are mistreated because of black colored skin so what you are saying doesn't sound far fetched.

Not in a "North/Northeastern" Africa, Americansista.

THERE IS NOWHERE IN AFRICA---NOWHERE--that the one drop rule is accepted.

We have families of Africans in different shades in Ghana, in Ethiopia, in South Africa---they will not allow you to just call anybody "black".

It is NOT just North Africa.

Your ancestors are completely kicked
each time they see what has been done to
you.

And this belief that anybody can be white
is the reason that Black Americans get whiter
and lighter with each generation. You have
no respect/no love for "blackness"---so you
strive to become lightskinned while still
calling yourselves "Black"----all because
of your Slave Master's lie.

But notice that you look less and less like
your black ancestors.

Notice what you are saying about THEM.

Stupid ass Kola - The reason that it's not accepted in Africa is because the one-drop rule is the American white man's rule. Why should Africans accept rules laid down by American white people???

Kola, you type it, I read it and I still have no concept of what that is like. It's bad enough in America dealing with daily shyt on the job because of RACE, period. Since I can pose 1000001 questions with different variants, I'll just leave it be because I'll likely run you crazy.

Basically Africa is like....one big "brown paper bag test" and the blackest africans can be just as racist as the lightest ones, true? Blacks wanting to maintain purity remind me of the slavemasters. Anything other than black/white "tainting" the blood is NOT pure.

Hell, I guess we're all a bunch of bastards sitting up in here typing and whatnot because I know of no black americans that are uncut and pure thoroughbreds and if that is the case, no matter how darkskinned "authentic" looking I am or my man is, when I squeeze a baby out ..there will be some trace of the filthy overseer lurking around in the blood line.

You see...I can't just go by the color of the skin. It's in the blood too. It will NEVER be pure here in America. It would be a lie; FALSE. Like Sicilians. They can pretend all they damn what that they're "white"; same as Arabs but they ARE NOT. No matter how much they try to breed more and more nordic features, the blood line is already "tainted" with BLACK blood so they can never EVER be pure, no matter how many lighter skinned sicilians/arabs/whites they screw.

It's a clever ploy but not one made with TRUTH.

VERY good question and vise versa. Why should Americans except the African rules for the caste system? That is exactly why I have trouble understanding it. Being an American, that is something hard to digest but since Kola has lived it she already knows all about it.

I have asked some Africans that I work with about the color caste system (one from Chad, other one from Tanzania) they gave me different answers. I guess it's all based off of a person's personally experiences. ONe thing they both had in common was the disgust for the American Black male. Seriously, had issues with that but that is another story!

Exactly. And this forum is for Black people in America. Not for Africans. And not for some half-breed wannabe authentic person to come and impose her "Authentic African" bullshit. Because that's just what it is. A bunch of BULLSHIT.

We should be discussing OUR conditions, how to improve our lives, how to increase our income and how to better ourselves.

Instead of wasting time discussing WTF happened 500 years ago, and what the starving Africans over in Africa are thinking about us. Since they're starving, wouldn't they be wondering where they're going to get their next meal from?

Most Africans probably don't even know there is an "America" or that there is an African diaspora. LOLOLOLOL!!!

All of this has to do with the fact that kola has a Messianic complex. She craves attention and adoration and she wants to elevate herself to the role of showing American blacks the error of their ways so she can lead them out of "bondage" and make them free to worship an idolize her as their savior. If she wants to preserve blackness, she should go back to Africa where it orginated.

At this point, seperating "blacks" into groups/"race" (as Kola "sees" it) based on skin color, in America, will never happen. I don't see it happening in Africa either. Reason being, it utlimately would divide families based on skin-color. People won't go for it.

However, it would be quite interesting to see what would happen. But I think Kola, too often, romanticizes Africa and it's "authenctic" inhabitants. At the end of the day, people are still people, and the human heart has proven to be extremely wicked and alive --even in her beloved Africa.

They can only react emotionally
just as your hurt as an African is
coming from an emotional place. They
can't understand how Africans feel
insulted and you can't understand that
this has been their way of life for
hundreds of years. They are not from
Africa they are from slavery.

That is a foolish comment, as I see it. Slavery in the U.S. ended 1865. Slavery was not invented in the Americas.

We know, as you do, that slavery is an old institution part of civilization since ancient times. We also know that BEFORE the transatlantic slave trade too root in Africa [around the mid-15t century] Africans enslaved other Africans. But within this system of enslavement, African slaves were primarily assimilated into their master's societies; thus, there was African slavery, and slaves exported through the trans-Sahaharan trade. But by the time, the british, french, and the dutch began to partake in the trans-Atlantic trade [1650s], African slavery began to change, and by the 17th century, African slavery began to be associated both with the creation of African states and agricultural economies.

And after the slave trade formally ended in 1807, Africans slavery expanded exponentially until around the turn of the 20th century, as Europeans used the elimination of slavery in Africa as a reason to devy up Africa.

Thus, as quiet as its kept among many Africans, many of them are descendants of slaves. They often focus on their more recent oppressive history of colonialism, but slavery in Africa, at least on a large scale, ended around 1900, that is AFTER slavery in ALL of the Americas.

With that said, one would hope that a people's history can go beyond that part of their history that is related to oppression....One can only hope that Africans and African Americans can learn how to play fair, read, read, talk, talk, break bread, and consider that neither is right or wrong, but there has to be room to agree to disagree and at the same time focus on shared struggles and goals. But I am an optimist!

Yukio....STOP THE BULLSHIT.

Only "American" slavery invented
a "One Drop" rule.

And "Americans Blacks" were FORCED
and CONDITIONED to accept the one
drop rule during SLAVERY.

They carried it on afterwards,
because by then---it was natural
as breathing to them.

That's just one more VIOLATION
against the Humanity of Black
people that they "hold onto"
because it's all they know.

NO WHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET
---not Brazil, not Haiti, not Africa
not Dominican Republic
do Black People adhere to this
racist, idiotic one drop bullshit.

It goes with being a NIG.

You think so little of yourself
that just anybody can be you--and
you're PROUD of that.

Now it makes sense why all of
your children want to be white
---they've been TAUGHT/RAISED
that they can become White and
still call themselves "black"
---which is why there's no need
to be black people anymore.

kola: as i posted, I was commenting on the ubiquity of slavery in Africa after it was outlawed in the U.S. Thus, according to your friend's logic, Africans are from Africa and Slaves. That was my point.

I have already stated that a white person should not or nor does, in my opinion, work as a proxy for black humanity, so stop putting words in my mouth!

Whether Africans were enslaved or not,
they did NOT get the "one drop" rule
from African slavery.

Nor Brazilian or Haitian slavery.

That rule is the creation of the
WHITE MAN in America.

You're all sitting up here FIGHTING
to protect your WHITE MASTER's
rule that you're nothing but bastard
nig/gers.

That's what they think of yourselves.

That you're inferior---because HE says
so!!!
