Hey Y'all, just a couple of notes and thoughts, I'm the only one that bans posters. Other the the person who made the post, I'm the only one that deletes posts. Essentially the board is self-moderated. Very rarely do I step in and take action. If I do it is because someone (usually more than one) tells me something really ill is happening. Sometimes I take action, sometimes I do not. If I do take action it is usually a brute force methodology -- I'll delete an entire discussion rather than evalutation each post. I don't have time or desire to moderate disputes. Last month I deleted more posts than in the entire previous decade. All of those posts contained sexually graphic material. I also banned the poster of the sexually explicit material. Admittedly, I've given Kola lattitude for several reasons. (1) Unlike most Kola actually supports Black businesses including AALBC.com and other authors in word, deed and business; (2) She is an interesting character and good writer, like Chris, Cynique, ABM and many others. (3) Most of the posters who sent me feedback rather she be on board than not (I generally do not act on feedback from lurkers -- even though the are the vast majority of visitors). Now Thumper hated(s) Kola and Thumper's my man so that situation was a challenge. But I went through the same challenges supporting Thumper with all of the authors he pissed off ripping there books to shreads... (4) If 1/2 of what Kola says is true about her life I'm surprised she is not in a padded room right now. ...so yeah I cut her some slack. Enchanted, Kola was not "adopted" she is already part of my fam. As all the "long time posters" are. While I don't get a chance to read these boards as often as I would like -- I really do enjoy them and I always get a kick out of meeting one of y'all in person. Well, Troy, I understand that this board is not your priority but because it does generate so many hits and this translates into good business for you, it behooves you to have a moderator to monitor infringements. (And, no, I'm not campaigning for the job.) I have put up with a lot of shit trying be a good sport rather than a tattletale running to you with every little problem but I really think that it's a discourteous lack of respect for me to have my real name constantly used on this board without my permission. Hey Cynique, I deleted conversations that included your photo and full name -- at least the posts that I found. I located these posts by doing a google search. The google search also reveals that your identity was exposed back in 2002. Truth be told, I'd have to lay blame with you for the reason your real identity was exposed. Anyone who reads the posts would come to the same conclusion. I appreciate that Kola has taken exposing your identity to another level, beyond perhaps anything you may have imaged back in '02. Which is why I deleted the posts. I'm sure Kola will not use this tactic again (right Kola?) Technology can be scary. Hey Cynique I just deleted that post (it had not been indexed by Google yet) and I just stumbled across it. As you mentioned a moderator would help control things but "control" is not exactly the desired effect. I want people to feel free to express themselves without reservation (save rampant dissemination of graphic pornographic photos), test their ideas and challenge the ideas of others. I believe this board allows people to do that without some of the problems that make open communication difficult in the physical space. Of course with anything in else in life there are trade offs. If you give folks too much freedom some will tend to abuse it. Kola wanted a completely open board no registration but it got spammed. I did not want to approve registrations, but hackers have automated the registration process and now I have to approve each and every new registrant. So every couple of days I have to find the 4 or 5 legitimate new registrants out of the 50 or more bogus automated ones used by spammers. I err on the side of caution and I’m sure I delete some real people who just want to participate. And I have not even got to what is required to deal with the actual posters yet. But I’m sure you get my drift…. I can get more sophisticated software and force new registrants to read wavy letters over a patterned back ground, but that takes time/money to implement. A moderators take time/money as well. Long story short is freedom is not free. Right now I pay the price to allow this forum to continue; and if you think money is my only motivation you are trippin! I enjoy reading this stuff. I’m proud of the forum. I learn from all of you. Needless to say these discussion boards are not for everyone; nor is freedom for that matter. | ||
