When love is a black-and-white issue Some won't like it, but mixed-race relationships are a fact of life, says Yasmin Alibhai-Brown Source: Independent - London THE STORY of race relations in Britain is always told as an encounter between whites and blacks. The children of the empire came with joy and hope, only to be rejected by these island people who remain endemically racist. False, or at least dangerously simplistic. It was mostly white men who reacted with anger and revulsion towards black immigrants; it is white men today who carry out acts of racist violence. Vast numbers of white women, on the other hand, have always been drawn to black men - 50 per cent of black men in Britain have white partners - and the trend is upwards. These women confront brutal racism, sexism and the resentment of black women, and yet most remain undaunted. Last Sunday, on the Bemerton estate in Islington, north London, white men in Ku-Klux-Klan uniforms went on the rampage, picking on mixed-race families with special ferocity. I went to this estate while researching my forthcoming book on mixed-race relationships, Mixed Feelings (The Women's Press). I saw unspeakably vile graffiti about "white sluts" and "black pimps". A number of the young women with black boyfriends described how they had been spat at and beaten up by white men for being "nigger-lovers". It will not stop them. Sony, a young woman I met, said she enjoyed provoking the white men: "They are useless, fat, stupid, don't have nothing to offer. Black men take care of themselves. I like their culture...And look at those bodies. I think black men have the best bodies in England". Tina, Jo and Fallon are desperate to catch black men because they dance better, dress well and have "just so much confidence". The three women appear tonight on Skin Deep, a Channel 4 film that follows the women on the hunt for black men - who love the attention even though they are frequently careless and uncommitted themselves. White women, I am told by black "baby fathers" - men who have children with several women - are kinder, more affectionate and less complaining than black "baby mothers". The number of these mixed-race children living with lone, young, white mothers has undoubtedly shot up. Ramsey, one of my interviewees, ventures to give me some other in- depth reasons for these preferences: "The black man is king in the bed, on the dance floor and on some street corners. He has no real power without his sex. White power wants him dead. So we take their girls and make the blokes suffer. They suffer, sister. They try and make us suffer, too, and I do feel sorry for these girls who love us because black culture is the coolest, you know?" This is honest, but not new. In the Sixties, the African-American writer Eldridge Cleaver wrote Soul on Ice, about the fantasies of black men: "By loving me she proves I am worthy of white love. When my restless hands caress those white breasts they grasp white civilization and dignity and make them mine." What is new about this latest batch of cross-racial lovers is they inhabit a world with its own values and an internal cohesion and ease. In the Fifties and Sixties, black men were similarly irresistible to white women and for not dissimilar reasons. They dressed beautifully, had impeccable manners and knew how to dance the jitterbug. At dance halls, black men and white women got together and there was no stopping what happened later. But these encounters produced long-term relationships, many of which survive to this day. The racism they faced made them fight harder and they survived longer. Relationships between black men and white women in the more affluent classes face their own problems. Many influential black men, such as Trevor Macdonald, Lenny Henry, Ainsley Harriott, Frank Bruno and Lord Taylor, have white partners and are accused by black women of seeking trophy wives who will ensure they fit in comfortably with the establishment. But the rebuttal from these black men was the same. They all loathed the loud confrontational demeanor of black women. Frank Bruno stated, "I personally find the untidy and over weight disposition of black women to be undesirable. Their unkept kinky heads and masculine facial features is also a turn off for me". The other black men agreed. Sharron Davies, then married to the black athlete Derek Redmond, described how much harsh comments from black women hurt her. Sharron said, "I think it's a shame these angry and bitter black women stare and say rude comments. They are so jealous because black men find us much easier to get along with. We don't have the temper tantrums and use profanity and display ignorance in public as they do." Dawn French and Lenny Henry have even had death threats. But again, these relationships carry on and are getting more and not less common. White women with black men first caused a panic in this country in the 16th century and the same anxieties will no doubt surface when people watch Tina and her friends tonight. But no laws, policies or lectures will, it seems, stop this attraction. And anyway, says Sony defiantly: "Look at our beautiful babies. We make beautiful babies with black men. What's wrong with that?" | ||

I don't know the exact gender breakdown, but 50% of Black Britains are the product of interracial relationships/marriages. One parent is (White) British and the other is Black, usually by way of the West Indies or Africa. Guitarist Slash of Guns and Roses fame is one of the exceptions. His mother is Black American, his father is (White) British. | ||

ABM in britain and whales i heard there's also a pretty high percentage of black british women in interracial relationships. I think it was somethign liek 36% of black british women married outside their race or around that number. You can view a statistics chart on it at this link. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=1090 what i found telling about the link above though is that it felt the need to expound on the percentage of black british men and mixed black british men who married outside their race but it never mentioned the women...it leaves it up to you to look at the chart and figure up the numbers for yourself on the women. How typical. But i remember reading another article a while back that said the percentage of black british women was around 36%. Anyway to me its a funny coincidence that you ask that question though because a few months ago i emailed the people who compiled these stats about the percentage of mixed race black carribean women who were in interracial relationships and there were almost just as many mixed race women as mixed race men in these relationships...here are the stats i got back when i mailed them. I found it very offensive that they chose to highlight the men but didnt make it a point to distinguish the percentage of mixed race black women who were married interracial. so anyway, out of curiosity i emailed them and here is what i got. "Hello, Thank you for your query regarding our statistics on inter-ethnic marriages. The Mixed group category in England and Wales does not only include a Mixed White and Black option but also includes the following: Mixed: White and Black Caribbean Mixed: White and Black African Mixed: White and Asian Mixed: Any Other Mixed background More details are available in 'Who are the Mixed?' ( http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/article.asp?id=1580) For details of inter-ethnic marriages among women from Mixed groups, please see: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/Product.asp?vlnk=10991 (Focus on Ethnicity and Identity data) and file titled 14_InterEthnicMarriagesNewFeb05 From these tables you will see that among women who described their own ethnic group as 'Mixed - White and Black Caribbean', 71 per cent were married to White men, 13 per cent to Black Caribbean men and 10 per cent to 'Mixed White and Black Caribbean' men. So among Mixed White and Black Caribbean women, just 12 per cent were married to someone from the Mixed group (any of the 4 Mixed options) and 88 per cent were in an inter-ethnic marriage (with someone outside the main Mixed group). In comparison, among women who described their own ethnic group as 'Mixed - White and Black African', 50 per cent were married to White men, 11 per cent to Black African men and 28 per cent to 'Mixed White and Black African' men. So among Mixed White and Black African women, 31 per cent were married to someone from the Mixed group (any of the 4 Mixed options) and 69 per cent were in an inter-ethnic marriage (with someone outside the main Mixed group). Because the amount of black british men married interracial is 50%...there is still quite a difference in 50% and 36% although both percentages are pretty high. Also, i never thought of it as being that way in regards to britain (where the black women have no other choice)...now in america it may be that way for alot of black women where many of them feel they have no other choice.....but as far as britain goes i think the explanation is that the people there just have way fewer race problems than we have here in america and that's why you have such a high number of black british women and black british men who marry outside their race.....another reasonhas to do with the fact that there are simply more white people than black people in britain and whales. So the number of blacks who marry white is going to be pretty high. also remember they're not even factoring in a one drop rule so they're not counting the people who are mixed with black and white in with the blacks like we do here in america. if we were to apply the one drop rule to britain like we do to america...the percentage of blacks in interracials would shoot way up even farther because according to the stats the majority of mixed race black british men and women there marry white....its 76% for mixed black carribbean men...... 71% for mixed race black carribean women and 50% for mixed race african women. ....and thats jsut counting the ones who marry white...if you include the ones who are married to indians and pakastanis, the numbers shoot up even more. something i wonder though is if they're counting people who are only 1/4th white or 1/8th white as "mixed" in britain and whales? i also wonder what stats for interracial marriages would be like in america if america did like britain and separated the "mixed" people from the "blacks". | ||

ethiopans,eriterians, ARE NOT mixed with white. They look the way they do because of their genetics,some are mixed with arab. I honestly think that eriterian and ethiopian, females are WAY more better loking than most biracial females. Erterians have a exotic look to them. Most of the biracial females I have seen, do not look like Eriterian or ethiopian women. For some reason I find biracial females to be Not that attractive. But tri-racial mixed women like Brazilians,and Venezuelans who are a combination of Amazon Indian ,African,and Spaniard and in some cases Asian are VERY ATTRACTIVE. | ||

Not only that but i dont get why people say the ethiopians and somalis with straight hair have to be mixed with arab....they dont even have any arab features other than the hair and the fact that they are hairy people. They are not built like arabs nor do most of them look anywhere close to arabs in the face. their head shape is completely different....they also tend to have very long necks while you dont see too many arabs with long necks like that....and their facial features dont really look similar to arabs for the most part. Most of them dont even have hooked noses...arabs tend to have hooked noses. it's true that the desert makes your hair grow long and straight and it makes a person hairy....so perhaps the reason for their features is that they're simply closer to the desert. i realize that mixed people come in all colors but generally a mixed person is light skinnned......but most ethiopians ive seen range from dark brown to jet black but they still have the straight hair. so if they are so mixed why arent more of the ones who have straight hair also light skinned. | ||

Their history proves they are mixed Misty and not just with Arabs but mainly with PERSIANS because of the thousands of years they had trading and the original SLAVE TRADE. Kenya is further north than Ethiopia and Somalia so why dont the Kenyans look mixed as well?? Because Kenya DID NOT have trading activity very much with PERSIA, Yemen and the Arab world. The history of these countries totally refutes what you are saying its like Lena Horne saying both her parents are black therefore she has no white blood. enchanted...as far as kenyans go...they can get pretty light...as well...but it may also have to do with diet. also again i never denied that SOME ethiopians and eritreans had racial mixture....but i dobut that every one of them with straight or wavy hair is mixed...thats all i was saying. most ethiopians ive seen arent even light and most of them have straight to wavy to curly hair..and a few of them have kinky hair.....all im saying is if they're so mixed why arent more of them light skinned (generaly mixed people are light skinnned although there are acceptions to the rule)...theres a few light ones but most are not....plus why is it that in america most mixed children still have some curl to their hair...but if you go to ethiopia...there are quite a few very dark people with bone straight hair???? all im saying is perhaps they had some of those features before they mixed....and perhaps everyone with straight to wavy hair isnt mixed. | ||

enchanted...just like you need to take your ass back and REREAD the dam post. i even SPECIFIED that most ethiopians dont look mixed so i dont know what the hell point you're arguing here....i simply said most dont have kinky hair.... you will find that many of the darkest, most afrocentric looking ethiopians have wavy hair.....this is why its hard for me to beleive that every ethiopian with that type of hair has mixed ancestry. what you need to realize is that you have 2 main types of black people(the aboriginal types) with the straight hair and the other type with the kinky hair. the dilit of india are said to come from egypt and nubia (around ethiopia)....and they are soem of the "purest" africans because many of them have little to no outside admixture since the caste system prevented this...they simply ahve straight hair...but some of them look like bantu africans in the face yet have wavy and straight hair. hwo do you explian that???? some of them look more african in the face than most black americans yet have straight hair. usually a mixed group of people has more of a balance of mixture when it comes to facial features and hair texture. | ||

Nubia is in Sudan, it's nowhere near Ethiopia but in biblical times Sudan and Kenya were part of Ethiopia. Minus Enchanted's rude remarks and as an Arab American woman I have to agree 100% with Enchanted's comments. The vast majority of Ethiopians do not have "wavy" hair and they are extremely black skinned. You're talking about a country that has 40 million people and is mostly rural. As you get closer to the big cities, however, the people are what you call [Ethnic Ethiopians], they have admixture going back thousands of years with Yemenese and Persia. | ||
